19 Đây là tuyên ngôn [a] dành cho Ai-cập: Nầy, CHÚA đến như đám mây bay nhanh vào Ai-cập. Các thần tượng nó sẽ run sợ trước mặt Ngài, và Ai-cập sẽ không còn can đảm.
2 CHÚA phán, “Ta sẽ khiến cho dân Ai-cập tự đánh lẫn nhau. Thân nhân đánh thân nhân; láng giềng đánh láng giềng; thành đánh thành; vương quốc đánh vương quốc [b]. 3 Người Ai-cập sẽ hoảng sợ, ta sẽ phá hỏng kế hoạch chúng. Chúng sẽ cầu hỏi thần tượng mình và các vong linh người đã chết, hỏi các đồng bóng và thầy bói.” 4 Chúa Toàn Năng phán, “Ta sẽ trao Ai-cập cho một ông chủ khắc nghiệt, một vua hùng mạnh sẽ cai trị chúng.”
5 Biển sẽ khô cạn, nước sẽ biến mất khỏi sông Nin. 6 Các kênh rạch sẽ hôi thúi [c]; và các suối nước của Ai-cập sẽ khô cạn. Các cây mọc dưới nước sẽ thối; 7 các cây dọc theo bờ sông Nin sẽ chết. Ngay cả các cây mọc trong đồng bên bờ sông Nin sẽ khô héo, bị gió thổi đi, và biến mất.

11 Các viên chức của thành phố Xoan [d] toàn là đồ ngu ngốc; những cố vấn khôn ngoan cho vua Ai-cập đưa ra ý kiến bậy bạ. Làm sao các ngươi nói được cùng vua rằng, “Tôi là dòng dõi của những người khôn ngoan”? Làm sao ngươi bảo rằng, “Tôi là dòng vua xưa kia”? 12 Hỡi Ai-cập, kẻ khôn ngoan của ngươi đâu? Bảo chúng cho ngươi biết điều Chúa Toàn Năng đã định cho Ai-cập đi.
13 Các viên chức của Xoan đã bị gạt; các lãnh tụ của Mem-phít [e] tin chuyện nhảm. Cho nên các lãnh tụ Ai-cập hướng dẫn dân mình đi lầm lạc. 14 CHÚA đã khiến các lãnh tụ đó hoang mang. Chúng hướng dẫn dân Ai-cập đi lang thang không lối, như người say sờ soạng trong đồ mình mửa ra. 15 Ai-cập bó tay, dù sang hay hèn, lãnh tụ hay thường dân, không ai giúp nó được.
16 Trong ngày đó dân Ai-cập sẽ như đàn bà. Chúng sẽ khiếp sợ CHÚA Toàn Năng, vì Ngài sẽ giơ tay lên phạt chúng. 17 Đất Giu-đa sẽ làm cho Ai-cập hoảng sợ. Ai nghe đến tên Giu-đa cũng sẽ kinh khiếp, vì CHÚA Toàn Năng đã định nghịch cùng chúng. 18 Lúc đó năm thành trong Ai-cập sẽ nói tiếng Hê-bơ-rơ, ngôn ngữ của xứ Ca-na-an. Họ sẽ cam kết trung thành cùng CHÚA Toàn Năng. Một trong các thành đó sẽ có tên là Thành Hủy Diệt [f].
19 Lúc đó sẽ có một bàn thờ cho CHÚA giữa xứ Ai-cập và một đền kỷ niệm cho CHÚA ở biên giới Ai-cập. 20 Đây là dấu hiệu và nhân chứng cho CHÚA Toàn Năng trong xứ Ai-cập. Khi dân chúng kêu xin CHÚA cứu giúp thì Ngài sai người đến cứu và bênh vực họ. Ngài sẽ giải cứu họ khỏi những kẻ ức hiếp họ.
21 CHÚA sẽ tỏ mình cho dân Ai-cập, họ sẽ biết Ngài là CHÚA. Họ sẽ thờ lạy Thượng Đế và dâng của lễ. Họ sẽ hứa nguyện [g] cùng CHÚA và giữ lời hứa đó. 22 CHÚA sẽ trừng phạt dân Ai-cập, nhưng Ngài sẽ chữa lành cho họ. Họ sẽ trở lại cùng Ngài, Ngài sẽ nghe lời cầu khẩn của họ và chữa lành họ.
23 Lúc đó sẽ có một đường cái chạy từ Ai-cập đến A-xy-ri. Người A-xy-ri sẽ đi đến Ai-cập, và người Ai-cập sẽ đi đến A-xy-ri. Cả người Ai-cập lẫn A-xy-ri đều sẽ cùng thờ lạy Thượng Đế [h]. 24 Lúc đó Ít-ra-en, A-xy-ri, và Ai-cập sẽ hiệp chung nhau. Họ sẽ trở thành nguồn phước cho cả thế giới. 25 CHÚA Toàn Năng sẽ chúc phước cho họ rằng, “Hỡi Ai-cập, ngươi là dân ta. Hỡi A-xy-ri, ta đã dựng nên ngươi. Hỡi Ít-ra-en, ngươi là sản nghiệp ta. Tất cả các ngươi đều sẽ được phước!”

19 Lời tiên tri về Ai Cập,
Này, CHÚA cưỡi trên đám mây chớp nhoáng
Đến Ai Cập.
Các thần tượng tại Ai Cập đều run rẩy trước mặt Ngài
Và lòng người Ai Cập đều tan chảy giữa họ.
2 “Ta sẽ khuấy động người Ai Cập chống lại người Ai Cập,
Anh em chống nhau;
Lân cận nghịch cùng lân cận;
Thành này chống thành kia,
Vương quốc nọ[a] chống vương quốc kia.
3 Người Ai Cập sẽ mất tinh thần.[b]
Ta sẽ phá hỏng mưu mô của chúng.
Chúng sẽ cầu hỏi các thần tượng,
Các đồng bóng và thầy bói.
4 Ta sẽ giao dân Ai Cập vào tay
Người chủ khắc nghiệt
Và một vua bạo tàn sẽ cai trị chúng,”
CHÚA Vạn Quân phán.
5 Nước biển[c] sẽ cạn,
Sông cũng cạn và khô.
6 Các kênh đào sẽ trở nên hôi thối;
Các sông ngòi của Ai Cập sẽ cạn dần và khô đi;
Lau sậy đều khô héo.
7 Cây cỏ dọc bờ sông,
Tại cửa sông
Và tất cả đồng ruộng bên bờ sông
Sẽ bị khô, thổi bay đi và không còn gì cả.
8 Những người đánh cá sẽ than vãn,
Tất cả những kẻ câu cá trên sông sẽ than khóc
Và những người thả lưới trên nước
Sẽ mòn mỏi.
9 Những kẻ làm vải gai tuyệt vọng
Và những kẻ dệt vải trắng cũng vậy.[d]
10 Những kẻ cột trụ của xứ sẽ bị đập tan,
Tâm hồn của tất cả những người làm thuê sẽ đau đớn.
11 Các hoàng tử[e] của Xô-an đều ngu ngốc,
Các cố vấn khôn ngoan của Pha-ra-ôn chỉ đưa ra những lời khuyên ngu dại.
Làm thế nào các ngươi có thể nói với Pha-ra-ôn:
“Tôi là con một người thông thái,
Con cháu của các vua thời xưa?”
12 Thế thì các nhà thông thái của ngươi đâu?
Chúng nó hãy nói cho ngươi,
Hãy cho ngươi biết CHÚA Vạn Quân
Đã có chương trình gì nghịch cùng Ai Cập?
13 Các hoàng tử của Xô-an đã trở nên ngu dại,
Các hoàng tử của Nốp đã bị lừa gạt.
Những viên đá nền móng của các bộ tộc họ
Đã làm cho Ai Cập lầm lạc.
14 CHÚA đã đổ vào nó
Một tinh thần lầm lẫn;
Nó làm cho Ai Cập lầm lạc trong mọi việc mình làm
Như một người say đi nghiêng ngả và mửa.
15 Sẽ chẳng có ai làm được gì cho Ai Cập cả,
Dù là đầu hay đuôi, cành dương hay cây sậy.
16 Vào ngày ấy, người Ai Cập sẽ giống như đàn bà, run rẩy, sợ hãi trước cánh tay của CHÚA Vạn Quân giơ lên nghịch cùng họ. 17 Bấy giờ đất Giu-đa sẽ trở nên sự kinh hoàng cho người Ai Cập. Đất ấy được nhắc đến thì mọi người đều sợ hãi vì chương trình mà CHÚA Vạn Quân đã định nghịch cùng Ai Cập.
Ai Cập, A-si-ri Và Y-sơ-ra-ên Được Phước
18 Vào ngày ấy năm thành trong đất Ai Cập sẽ nói tiếng Ca-na-an và thề trung thành với CHÚA Vạn Quân. Một trong các thành này gọi là thành hủy diệt.[f]
19 Vào ngày ấy sẽ có một bàn thờ cho CHÚA ở giữa nước Ai Cập và một đài kỷ niệm[g] cho CHÚA tại nơi biên giới nước ấy. 20 Đó là dấu chứng cho CHÚA Vạn Quân tại nước Ai Cập. Khi[h] họ kêu cầu cùng CHÚA vì bị áp bức thì Ngài sẽ sai đến một đấng giải cứu để bênh vực và giải cứu họ. 21 CHÚA sẽ làm cho người Ai Cập biết Ngài, vào ngày ấy người Ai Cập sẽ biết CHÚA. Họ sẽ thờ phượng Ngài bằng sinh tế, tế lễ thiêu; họ sẽ khấn hứa với CHÚA và hoàn thành các lời hứa ấy.
22 CHÚA sẽ đánh Ai Cập, đánh rồi chữa lành và họ sẽ trở lại cùng CHÚA; Ngài sẽ nghe lời cầu nguyện của họ và chữa lành cho.
23 Vào ngày ấy, sẽ có một xa lộ từ Ai Cập đến A-si-ri. Người A-si-ri sẽ đến Ai Cập và người Ai Cập sẽ đến A-si-ri; Người Ai Cập sẽ cùng với người A-si-ri thờ phượng CHÚA.[i]
24 Vào ngày ấy Y-sơ-ra-ên sẽ là một phần ba cùng với Ai Cập và A-si-ri, làm nguồn phước trên trái đất; 25 là ba nước CHÚA Vạn Quân ban phước cho và phán: “Phước cho dân ta là Ai Cập, công việc của tay ta là A-si-ri và di sản của ta là Y-sơ-ra-ên.”

God’s Message to Egypt
19 This is a ·message [prophecy; oracle; burden] about Egypt:
Look, the Lord is coming on a ·fast [swift] cloud
to enter Egypt.
The idols of Egypt will tremble before him,
and Egypt’s ·courage [heart] will melt away.
2 The Lord says, “I will ·cause the Egyptians to fight against themselves [L provoke Egypt against Egypt].
People will fight with their ·relatives [brothers];
neighbors will fight neighbors;
cities will fight cities;
kingdoms will fight kingdoms.
3 The Egyptians will ·be afraid [lose heart],
and I will ·ruin their plans [confuse their counsel].
They will ·ask advice from [consult] their idols and spirits of the dead,
from their mediums and ·fortune-tellers [magicians; necromancers].”
4 The Lord God ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts] says,
“I will hand Egypt ·over to [L into the hand of] a hard master,
and a ·powerful [fierce] king will rule over them.”
5 The ·sea [or river; L waters] will become dry,
and the ·water will disappear from the Nile River [L river will be parched and dry].
6 The canals will stink;
the streams of Egypt will decrease and dry up.
All the ·water plants [L reeds and bulrushes] will rot;
7 all the plants along the banks of the Nile will die.
Even the ·planted [cultivated] fields by the Nile
will dry up, blow away, and disappear [C catastrophic, since the Nile was essential to Egypt’s existence].
8 The fishermen, all those who ·catch fish from [L cast hooks into] the Nile,
will groan and ·cry [lament];
those who ·fish in the Nile [L spread nets on the water] will ·be sad [grieve; lose heart].
9 All the people who make cloth from flax will ·be sad [despair; or be ashamed],
and those who weave linen will ·lose hope [turn pale].
10 Those who ·weave cloth [or are its foundations] will be broken.
All those who work for ·money [wages] will be ·sad [L grieved in their soul].
11 The officers of the city of Zoan [C probably Tanis, the Egyptian city nearest Israel] are fools;
the wise ·men who advise the king of Egypt [counselors/advisors of Pharaoh] give ·wrong [senseless; stupid] advice.
How can you say to him, ‘I am ·wise [L a son of the wise]’?
How can you say, ‘I am ·from the old family of the kings [a son of ancient kings; C “son of” may mean “an expert in the ways of”]’?
12 Egypt, where are your wise men?
Let them show you
what the Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts] has planned for Egypt.
13 The officers of Zoan [v. 11] have ·been fooled [become fools];
the ·leaders [princes] of Memphis [C prominent city in northern Egypt] ·have believed false things [are deceived/deluded].
So the ·leaders of Egypt [L cornerstones of her tribes]
lead that nation ·the wrong way [astray].
14 The Lord has ·made the leaders confused [L mixed into them a spirit of distortion].
They have led Egypt to ·wander in the wrong ways [or err in all it does],
like drunk people stumbling in their own vomit.
15 There is nothing Egypt can do;
·no one there can help [L head or tail, palm branch or reed; C no one, high or low, could help Egypt].
16 In that day the Egyptians will be like women [C physically weak and vulnerable]. They will ·be afraid of [tremble with fear at] the Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts], because he will raise his hand to strike them down. 17 The land of Judah will ·bring fear [be a terror] to Egypt. Anyone there who hears the name Judah will be afraid, because the Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts] has planned terrible things for them. 18 ·At that time [L In that day] five cities in Egypt will speak the language of Canaan [C Hebrew or Aramaic, evidence of Israel’s dominance over Egypt], and they will ·promise to be loyal [swear allegiance] to the Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts]. One of these cities will be named the City of Destruction.[a] 19 ·At that time [L In that day] there will be an altar for the Lord in the middle of Egypt and a ·monument [or sacred pillar] to the Lord at the border of Egypt. 20 This will be a sign and a witness to the Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts] in the land of Egypt. When the people cry to the Lord for help, he will send a savior and defender, who will rescue them.
21 So the Lord will ·show himself [make himself known] to the Egyptians, and ·then [L in that day] they will ·know he is [acknowledge; know] the Lord. They will ·worship [serve] God ·and offer many sacrifices [with sacrifices and offerings]. They will make ·promises [vows] to the Lord and will keep them. 22 The Lord will ·punish [L strike] the Egyptians, but then he will heal them. They will ·come back [return] to the Lord, and he will listen to their ·prayers [pleas] and heal them.
23 ·At that time [L In that day] there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrians will go to Egypt, and the Egyptians will go to Assyria. The Egyptians and Assyrians will worship God together. 24 ·At that time [L In that day] ·Israel, Assyria, and Egypt will join together [L Israel will be the third, with Egypt and Assyria; C a great power like them], which will be a blessing for the earth. 25 The Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts] will bless them, saying, “Egypt, you are my people. Assyria, ·I made you [L the work of my hands]. Israel, ·I own you [my inheritance]. You are all blessed!”

A Prophecy Against Egypt
19 A prophecy(A) against Egypt:(B)
See, the Lord rides on a swift cloud(C)
and is coming to Egypt.
The idols of Egypt tremble before him,
and the hearts of the Egyptians melt(D) with fear.
2 “I will stir up Egyptian against Egyptian—
brother will fight against brother,(E)
neighbor against neighbor,
city against city,
kingdom against kingdom.(F)
3 The Egyptians will lose heart,(G)
and I will bring their plans(H) to nothing;(I)
they will consult the idols and the spirits of the dead,
the mediums and the spiritists.(J)
4 I will hand the Egyptians over
to the power of a cruel master,
and a fierce king(K) will rule over them,”
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.
5 The waters of the river will dry up,(L)
and the riverbed will be parched and dry.(M)
6 The canals will stink;(N)
the streams of Egypt will dwindle and dry up.(O)
The reeds(P) and rushes will wither,(Q)
7 also the plants(R) along the Nile,
at the mouth of the river.
Every sown field(S) along the Nile
will become parched, will blow away and be no more.(T)
8 The fishermen(U) will groan and lament,
all who cast hooks(V) into the Nile;
those who throw nets on the water
will pine away.
9 Those who work with combed flax(W) will despair,
the weavers of fine linen(X) will lose hope.
10 The workers in cloth will be dejected,
and all the wage earners will be sick at heart.
11 The officials of Zoan(Y) are nothing but fools;
the wise counselors(Z) of Pharaoh give senseless advice.(AA)
How can you say to Pharaoh,
“I am one of the wise men,(AB)
a disciple of the ancient kings”?
12 Where are your wise men(AC) now?
Let them show you and make known
what the Lord Almighty
has planned(AD) against Egypt.
13 The officials of Zoan(AE) have become fools,
the leaders of Memphis(AF) are deceived;
the cornerstones(AG) of her peoples
have led Egypt astray.
14 The Lord has poured into them
a spirit of dizziness;(AH)
they make Egypt stagger in all that she does,
as a drunkard staggers(AI) around in his vomit.
15 There is nothing Egypt can do—
head or tail, palm branch or reed.(AJ)
16 In that day(AK) the Egyptians will become weaklings.(AL) They will shudder with fear(AM) at the uplifted hand(AN) that the Lord Almighty raises against them. 17 And the land of Judah will bring terror to the Egyptians; everyone to whom Judah is mentioned will be terrified,(AO) because of what the Lord Almighty is planning(AP) against them.
18 In that day(AQ) five cities(AR) in Egypt will speak the language of Canaan and swear allegiance(AS) to the Lord Almighty. One of them will be called the City of the Sun.[a](AT)
19 In that day(AU) there will be an altar(AV) to the Lord in the heart of Egypt,(AW) and a monument(AX) to the Lord at its border. 20 It will be a sign and witness(AY) to the Lord Almighty in the land of Egypt. When they cry out to the Lord because of their oppressors, he will send them a savior(AZ) and defender, and he will rescue(BA) them. 21 So the Lord will make himself known to the Egyptians, and in that day they will acknowledge(BB) the Lord. They will worship(BC) with sacrifices and grain offerings; they will make vows to the Lord and keep them.(BD) 22 The Lord will strike(BE) Egypt with a plague;(BF) he will strike them and heal them. They will turn(BG) to the Lord, and he will respond to their pleas and heal(BH) them.
23 In that day(BI) there will be a highway(BJ) from Egypt to Assyria.(BK) The Assyrians will go to Egypt and the Egyptians to Assyria. The Egyptians and Assyrians will worship(BL) together. 24 In that day(BM) Israel will be the third, along with Egypt and Assyria,(BN) a blessing[b](BO) on the earth. 25 The Lord Almighty will bless(BP) them, saying, “Blessed be Egypt my people,(BQ) Assyria my handiwork,(BR) and Israel my inheritance.(BS)”
