See (A)what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called (B)children of God; and so we are. The reason why (C)the world does not know us is that (D)it did not know him. Beloved, we are (E)God's children (F)now, and what we will be (G)has not yet appeared; but we know that (H)when he appears[a] (I)we shall be like him, because (J)we shall see him as he is. And everyone who (K)thus hopes in him (L)purifies himself as he is pure.

  1. 1 John 3:2 Or when it appears

See what great love(A) the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!(B) And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.(C) Dear friends,(D) now we are children of God,(E) and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears,[a](F) we shall be like him,(G) for we shall see him as he is.(H) All who have this hope in him purify themselves,(I) just as he is pure.(J)

and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of (A)the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men[a] but (B)in the power of God.

Wisdom from the Spirit

Yet among (C)the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not (D)a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, (E)who are doomed to pass away. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, (F)which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of (G)the rulers of this age understood this, for (H)if they had, they would not have crucified (I)the Lord of glory. But, as it is written,

(J)“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
nor the heart of man imagined,
what God has (K)prepared (L)for those who love him”—

10 these things (M)God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even (N)the depths of God. 11 For who knows a person's thoughts (O)except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words,(A) but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,(B) so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.(C)

God’s Wisdom Revealed by the Spirit

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature,(D) but not the wisdom of this age(E) or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.(F) No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery(G) that has been hidden(H) and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age(I) understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.(J) However, as it is written:

“What no eye has seen,
    what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”[a]
the things God has prepared for those who love him—(K)

10 these are the things God has revealed(L) to us by his Spirit.(M)

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts(N) except their own spirit(O) within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
