Hosea 8

Israel Rejects the Lord
The Lord said:
8 Sound a warning!
Israel, you broke our agreement
and ignored my teaching.
Now an eagle[a] is swooping down
to attack my land.
2 Israel, you say, “We claim you,
the Lord, as our God.”
3 But your enemies
will chase you for rejecting
our good agreement.[b]
4 You chose kings and leaders
without consulting me;
you made silver and gold idols
that led to your downfall.
5 City of Samaria, I'm angry
because of your idol
in the shape of a calf.
When will you ever
be innocent again?
6 Someone from Israel built
that idol for you,
but only I am God.
And so it will be smashed
to pieces.[c]
7 If you scatter wind
instead of wheat,
you will harvest a whirlwind
and have no wheat.
Even if you harvest grain,
enemies will steal it all.
8 Israel, you are ruined,
and now the nations
consider you worthless.
9 You are like a wild donkey
that goes its own way.
You've run off to Assyria
and hired them as allies.
10 You can bargain with nations,
but I'll catch you anyway.
Soon you will suffer abuse
by kings and rulers.
11 Israel, you have built
many altars where you offer
sacrifices for sin.
But these altars have become
places for sin.
12 My instructions for sacrifices
were written in detail,
but you ignored them.
13 You sacrifice your best animals
and eat the sacrificial meals,[d]
but I, the Lord,
refuse your offerings.
I will remember your sins
and punish you.
Then you will return to Egypt.[e]
14 Israel, I created you,
but you forgot me.
You and Judah built palaces
and many strong cities.[f]
Now I will send fire to destroy
your towns and fortresses.

- 8.13 sacrifice … sacrificial meals: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text. Two kinds of sacrifices are referred to: Those in which the whole animal is burned on the altar (“whole burnt offerings” in traditional translations) and those in which part is eaten by the worshipers (“fellowship offerings” in traditional translations).
- 8.13 return to Egypt: Either as slaves or to find help against Assyria.
- 8.14 built palaces … cities: They did this because they no longer trusted the Lord to protect them. “Palaces” may also mean “temples.”

8 Set the trumpet to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the Lord, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law.
2 Israel shall cry unto me, My God, we know thee.
3 Israel hath cast off the thing that is good: the enemy shall pursue him.
4 They have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, and I knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that they may be cut off.
5 Thy calf, O Samaria, hath cast thee off; mine anger is kindled against them: how long will it be ere they attain to innocency?
6 For from Israel was it also: the workman made it; therefore it is not God: but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.
7 For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk; the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.
8 Israel is swallowed up: now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel wherein is no pleasure.
9 For they are gone up to Assyria, a wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath hired lovers.
10 Yea, though they have hired among the nations, now will I gather them, and they shall sorrow a little for the burden of the king of princes.
11 Because Ephraim hath made many altars to sin, altars shall be unto him to sin.
12 I have written to him the great things of my law, but they were counted as a strange thing.
13 They sacrifice flesh for the sacrifices of mine offerings, and eat it; but the Lord accepteth them not; now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt.
14 For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof.

Israel Will Reap the Whirlwind
8 Set (A)the trumpet to your lips!
One (B)like a vulture is over the house of the Lord,
because (C)they have transgressed my covenant
and rebelled against my law.
2 To me they cry,
(D)“My God, we—Israel—know you.”
3 Israel has spurned the good;
the enemy shall pursue him.
4 (E)They made kings, (F)but not through me.
They set up princes, but I knew it not.
With their silver and gold they made idols
for their own destruction.
5 (G)I have[a] spurned your calf, O Samaria.
My anger burns against them.
(H)How long will they be incapable of innocence?
6 For it is from Israel;
a craftsman made it;
it is not God.
(I)The calf of Samaria
(J)shall be broken to pieces.[b]
7 For (K)they sow the wind,
and they shall reap the whirlwind.
The standing grain has no heads;
it shall yield no flour;
if it were to yield,
(L)strangers would devour it.
8 (M)Israel is swallowed up;
already they are among the nations
as (N)a useless vessel.
9 For (O)they have gone up to Assyria,
(P)a wild donkey wandering alone;
Ephraim has hired lovers.
10 Though they hire allies among the nations,
I will soon gather them up.
And (Q)the king and princes (R)shall soon writhe
because of the tribute.
11 Because Ephraim (S)has multiplied altars for sinning,
they have become to him altars for sinning.
12 (T)Were I to write for him my laws by the ten thousands,
they would be regarded as a strange thing.
13 As for my sacrificial offerings,
(U)they sacrifice meat and eat it,
but the Lord does not accept them.
(V)Now he will remember their iniquity
and punish their sins;
(W)they shall return to Egypt.
14 For (X)Israel has forgotten (Y)his Maker
and (Z)built palaces,

8 Setze das Schopharhorn an deinen Mund! Wie ein Adler kommt es über das Haus des Herrn, weil sie meinen Bund übertreten und sich gegen mein Gesetz vergangen haben!
2 Zu mir werden sie schreien: »Du bist mein Gott; wir Israeliten kennen dich!« —
3 Israel hat das Gute verworfen; jetzt soll es der Feind verfolgen!
4 Sie haben Könige eingesetzt ohne meinen Willen, Fürsten, ohne dass ich es billigte; aus ihrem Silber und Gold haben sie sich Götzen gemacht, damit sie sich selbst zugrunde richteten.
5 Dein Kalb hat Er verworfen, Samaria! Mein Zorn ist entbrannt über sie! Wie lange noch sind sie unfähig zur Reinheit?
6 Denn aus Israel stammt es, und ein Künstler hat es gemacht; es ist kein Gott, sondern zu Splittern soll es zerschlagen werden, das Kalb von Samaria!
7 Denn Wind säen sie, und Sturm werden sie ernten; da wächst kein Halm, das Gewächs ergibt kein Mehl, und sollte es etwas geben, so würden Fremde es verschlingen.
8 Verschlungen wird Israel! Schon sind sie unter den Heiden geworden wie ein Gefäß, an dem man kein Wohlgefallen hat.
9 Denn sie sind nach Assyrien hinaufgezogen; ein Wildesel lebt für sich, Ephraim aber hat sich um Geschenke [Liebhaber] angeworben.
10 Weil sie sich denn [Liebhaber] unter den Heidenvölkern anwerben, so will ich diese jetzt auch haufenweise herbeibringen, und bald werden sie zu leiden haben unter der Last des Königs der Fürsten[a].
11 Weil Ephraim viele Altäre baute, um zu sündigen, so sind ihm die Altäre auch zur Sünde geworden.
12 Wenn ich ihm mein Gesetz auch noch so oft vorschreiben würde, so halten sie es doch für etwas Fremdes!
13 Die Schlachtopfer, die sie mir schenken, bringen sie dar wie [gewöhnliches] Fleisch und essen es. Der Herr hat kein Wohlgefallen an ihnen. Jetzt wird er an ihre Schuld gedenken und ihre Sünden strafen; sie sollen nach Ägypten zurückkehren!
14 Weil Israel seinen Schöpfer vergaß und sich Paläste erbaute, und weil Juda viele Städte befestigte, so will ich Feuer in seine Städte senden, das seine Prachtbauten verzehren soll.
