Israel’s Corruption

They please the king with their evil,(A)
the princes with their lies.(B)

All of them commit adultery;(C)
they are like an oven heated by a baker
who stops stirring the fire
from the kneading of the dough until it is leavened.
On the day of our king,
the princes are sick with the heat of wine(D)
there is a conspiracy with traitors.[a]
For they—their hearts like an oven—
draw him into their oven.
Their anger smolders all night;
in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.

All of them are as hot as an oven,(E)
and they consume their rulers.(F)
All their kings fall;
not one of them calls on me.[b]
Ephraim has allowed himself to get mixed up with the nations.
Ephraim is unturned bread baked on a griddle.
Foreigners consume his strength,(G)
but he does not notice.(H)
Even his hair is streaked with gray,
but he does not notice.
10 Israel’s arrogance testifies against them,[c](I)
yet they do not return to the Lord their God,(J)
and for all this, they do not seek him.

11 So Ephraim has become like a silly, senseless dove;(K)
they call to Egypt,(L) and they go to Assyria.(M)
12 As they are going, I will spread my net over them;(N)
I will bring them down like birds of the sky.
I will discipline them in accordance
with the news that reaches[d] their assembly.

The Lord’s Second Lament

13 Woe to them,(O) for they fled from me;(P)
destruction to them, for they rebelled against me!
Though I want to redeem them,(Q)
they speak lies against me.
14 They do not cry to me from their hearts;
rather, they wail on their beds.
They slash themselves[e](R) for grain and new wine;(S)
they turn away from me.
15 I trained and strengthened their arms,(T)
but they plot evil against me.(U)
16 They turn, but not to what is above;[f]
they are like a faulty bow.(V)
Their leaders will fall by the sword
because of their insolent tongue.(W)
They will be ridiculed for this in the land of Egypt.(X)

Israel’s False Hopes

Put the ram’s horn to your mouth!(Y)
One like an eagle comes
against the house of the Lord,(Z)
because they transgress my covenant(AA)
and rebel against my law.(AB)
Israel cries out to me,(AC)
“My God, we know you!”
Israel has rejected what is good;(AD)
an enemy will pursue him.

They have installed kings,(AE)
but not through me.
They have appointed leaders,
but without my approval.
They make their silver and gold(AF)
into idols for themselves
for their own destruction.[g]
Your calf-idol[h](AG) is rejected, Samaria.(AH)
My anger burns against them.
How long will they be incapable of innocence?(AI)
For this thing is from Israel—
a craftsman made it,(AJ) and it is not God.
The calf of Samaria will be smashed to bits!

Indeed, they sow the wind(AK)
and reap the whirlwind.(AL)
There is no standing grain;
what sprouts fails to yield flour.(AM)
Even if they did,
foreigners would swallow it up.
Israel is swallowed up!(AN)
Now they are among the nations
like discarded pottery.(AO)
For they have gone up to Assyria(AP)
like a wild donkey going off on its own.
Ephraim has paid for love.(AQ)
10 Even though they hire lovers among the nations,
I will now round them up,
and they will begin to decrease in number(AR)
under the burden of the king and leaders.(AS)
11 When Ephraim multiplied his altars for sin,(AT)
they became his altars for sinning.
12 Though I were to write out for him
ten thousand points of my instruction,(AU)
they would be[i] regarded as something strange.
13 Though they offer sacrificial gifts[j](AV)
and eat the flesh,(AW)
the Lord does not accept them.
Now he will remember their guilt(AX)
and punish their sins;(AY)
they will return to Egypt.(AZ)
14 Israel has forgotten his Maker(BA) and built palaces;(BB)
Judah has also multiplied fortified cities.
I will send fire on their cities,(BC)
and it will consume their citadels.

22 And what if God, wanting to display his wrath and to make his power known, endured with much patience(A) objects of wrath prepared for destruction?(B) 23 And what if he did this to make known the riches of his glory(C) on objects of mercy(D) that he prepared beforehand for glory(E) 24 on us, the ones he also called,(F) not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?(G)

Let the one who is taught the word share(A) all his good things with the teacher. Don’t be deceived: God is not mocked. For whatever a person sows he will also reap, because the one who sows to his flesh will reap destruction from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit(B) will reap eternal life(C) from the Spirit. Let us not get tired(D) of doing good,(E) for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us work(F) for the good(G) of all, especially for those who belong to the household(H) of faith.(I)
