Hosea 7

7 ^(A)when I would heal Israel,
    the iniquity of Ephraim is revealed,
    and the evil deeds of ^(B)Samaria,
for ^(C)they deal falsely;
    the thief breaks in,
    and the bandits raid outside.
²But they do not consider
    that ^(D)I remember all their evil.
Now ^(E)their deeds surround them;
    ^(F)they are before my face.
³By their evil ^(G)they make ^(H)the king glad,
    and the princes by their treachery.
⁴^(I)They are all adulterers;
    they are like a heated oven
whose baker ceases to stir the fire,
    from the kneading of the dough
    until it is leavened.
⁵On the day of ^(J)our king, the princes
    became sick with the heat of wine;
    he stretched out his hand with mockers.
⁶For with hearts like an oven ^(K)they approach their intrigue;
    all night their anger smolders;
    in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.
⁷All of them are hot as an oven,
    and they devour their rulers.
All ^(L)their kings ^(M)have fallen,
    and none of them calls upon me.

⁸Ephraim ^(N)mixes himself with the peoples;
    Ephraim is a cake not turned.
⁹^(O)Strangers devour his strength,
    and ^(P)he knows it not;
gray hairs are sprinkled upon him,
    and ^(Q)he knows it not.
¹⁰^(R)The pride of Israel testifies to his face;^[a]
    ^(S)yet they do not return to the Lord their God,
    nor seek him, for all this.

¹¹Ephraim is like a dove,
    ^(T)silly and without sense,
    calling to ^(U)Egypt, going to ^(V)Assyria.
¹²As they go, ^(W)I will spread over them my net;
    I will bring them down like birds of the heavens;
    ^(X)I will discipline them ^(Y)according to the report made to their congregation.
¹³^(Z)Woe to them, for they have strayed from me!
    Destruction to them, for they have rebelled against me!
^(AA)I would redeem them,
    but ^(AB)they speak lies against me.

¹⁴^(AC)They do not cry to me from the heart,
    but ^(AD)they wail upon their beds;
for grain and wine they gash themselves;
    they rebel against me.
¹⁵Although ^(AE)I trained and strengthened their arms,
    yet they devise evil against me.
¹⁶They ^(AF)return, but not upward;^[b]
    they are ^(AG)like a treacherous bow;
their princes shall fall by the sword
    because of ^(AH)the insolence of their tongue.
This shall be their derision ^(AI)in the land of Egypt.

You Are My Refuge

142 With my voice I ^(B)cry out to the Lord;
with my voice I ^(C)plead for mercy to the Lord.
²I ^(D)pour out my complaint before him;
I tell my trouble before him.

³When my spirit ^(E)faints within me,
    you know my way!
In the path where I walk
    they have ^(F)hidden a trap for me.
⁴^(G)Look to the ^(H)right and see:
    ^(I)there is none who takes notice of me;
^(J)no refuge remains to me;
    no one cares for my soul.

⁵I cry to you, O Lord;
    I say, “You are my ^(K)refuge,
    my ^(L)portion in ^(M)the land of the living.”
⁶^(N)Attend to my cry,
    for ^(O)I am brought very low!
Deliver me from my persecutors,
    ^(P)for they are too strong for me!
⁷^(Q)Bring me out of prison,
    that I may give thanks to your name!
The righteous will surround me,
    for you will ^(R)deal bountifully with me.

Jeremiah Taken to Egypt

43 When Jeremiah finished speaking to all the people all these words of the Lord their God, with which the Lord their God had sent him to them, ²Azariah the son of ^(A)Hoshaiah and ^(B)Johanan the son of Kareah and ^(C)all the insolent men said to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie. The Lord our God did not send you to say, ^(D)‘Do not go to Egypt to live there,’ ³but ^(E)Baruch the son of Neriah ^(F)has set you against us, ^(G)to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they may kill us or take us into exile in Babylon.” ⁴So ^(H)Johanan the son of Kareah and all ^(I)the commanders of the forces and all the people did not obey the voice of the Lord, to remain in the land of Judah. ⁵But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took ^(J)all the remnant of Judah who had returned to live in the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been driven— ⁶^(K)the men, the women, the children, ^(L)the princesses, and every person whom ^(M)Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with ^(N)Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan; also Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah. ⁷And they came into the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of the Lord. And they arrived at ^(O)Tahpanhes.

⁸Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah in ^(P)Tahpanhes: ⁹“Take in your hands large stones and hide them in the mortar in the pavement that is at the entrance to Pharaoh's palace in ^(Q)Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah, ¹⁰and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, ^(R)my servant, ^(S)and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden, and he will spread his royal canopy over them. ¹¹He shall come ^(T)and strike the land of Egypt, ^(U)giving over to the pestilence those who are doomed to the pestilence, to captivity those who are doomed to captivity, and to the sword those who are doomed to the sword. ¹²^(V)I shall kindle a fire ^(W)in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and he shall burn them ^(X)and carry them away captive. ^(Y)And he shall clean the land of Egypt ^(Z)as a shepherd cleans his cloak of vermin, and he shall go away from there in peace. ¹³He shall break the ^(AA)obelisks of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt, ^(AB)and the temples of the gods of Egypt he shall burn with fire.’”
