A Call to Repentance

Come, let’s return to the Lord.(A)
For he has torn us,(B)
and he will heal us;(C)
he has wounded us,
and he will bind up our wounds.(D)
He will revive us after two days,(E)
and on the third day he will raise us up
so we can live in his presence.(F)
Let’s strive to know the Lord.(G)
His appearance is as sure as the dawn.(H)
He will come to us like the rain,(I)
like the spring showers that water the land.

The Lord’s First Lament

What am I going to do with you, Ephraim?(J)
What am I going to do with you, Judah?
Your love is like the morning mist(K)
and like the early dew that vanishes.
This is why I have used the prophets
to cut them down;[a](L)
I have killed them with the words from my mouth.
My judgment strikes like lightning.[b]
For I desire faithful love and not sacrifice,
the knowledge of God(M) rather than burnt offerings.(N)

But they, like Adam,[c] have violated the covenant;(O)
there they have betrayed me.(P)

Gilead is a city of evildoers,(Q)
tracked with bloody footprints.(R)
Like raiders who wait in ambush for someone,(S)
a band of priests murders on the road to Shechem.(T)
They commit atrocities.(U)
10 I have seen something horrible(V) in the house of Israel:
Ephraim’s promiscuity is there;(W) Israel is defiled.

11 A harvest is also appointed for you, Judah.(X)
When I restore the fortunes of my people,(Y)

when I heal Israel,(Z)
the iniquity of Ephraim(AA) and the crimes of Samaria(AB)
will be exposed.
For they practice fraud;(AC)
a thief breaks in;
a raiding party pillages outside.(AD)
But they never consider that I remember all their evil.(AE)
Now their actions are all around them;(AF)
they are right in front of my face.

Israel’s Corruption

They please the king with their evil,(AG)
the princes with their lies.(AH)

All of them commit adultery;(AI)
they are like an oven heated by a baker
who stops stirring the fire
from the kneading of the dough until it is leavened.
On the day of our king,
the princes are sick with the heat of wine(AJ)
there is a conspiracy with traitors.[d]
For they—their hearts like an oven—
draw him into their oven.
Their anger smolders all night;
in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.

All of them are as hot as an oven,(AK)
and they consume their rulers.(AL)
All their kings fall;
not one of them calls on me.[e]
Ephraim has allowed himself to get mixed up with the nations.
Ephraim is unturned bread baked on a griddle.
Foreigners consume his strength,(AM)
but he does not notice.(AN)
Even his hair is streaked with gray,
but he does not notice.
10 Israel’s arrogance testifies against them,[f](AO)
yet they do not return to the Lord their God,(AP)
and for all this, they do not seek him.

11 So Ephraim has become like a silly, senseless dove;(AQ)
they call to Egypt,(AR) and they go to Assyria.(AS)
12 As they are going, I will spread my net over them;(AT)
I will bring them down like birds of the sky.
I will discipline them in accordance
with the news that reaches[g] their assembly.

The Lord’s Second Lament

13 Woe to them,(AU) for they fled from me;(AV)
destruction to them, for they rebelled against me!
Though I want to redeem them,(AW)
they speak lies against me.
14 They do not cry to me from their hearts;
rather, they wail on their beds.
They slash themselves[h](AX) for grain and new wine;(AY)
they turn away from me.
15 I trained and strengthened their arms,(AZ)
but they plot evil against me.(BA)
16 They turn, but not to what is above;[i]
they are like a faulty bow.(BB)
Their leaders will fall by the sword
because of their insolent tongue.(BC)
They will be ridiculed for this in the land of Egypt.(BD)

The Living Stone and a Holy People

Therefore, rid yourselves of(A) all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all slander.(B) Like newborn infants, desire the pure milk of the word,[a](C) so that by it you may grow up into your salvation, if you have tasted(D) that the Lord is good.[b](E) As you come to him, a living stone—rejected by people but chosen and honored by[c] God— you yourselves, as living stones, a spiritual house, are being built to be a holy priesthood[d] to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God(F) through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture:

See, I lay a stone in Zion,(G)
a chosen and honored[e] cornerstone,(H)
and the one who believes in him
will never be put to shame.[f](I)

So honor will come to you who believe; but for the unbelieving,

The stone that the builders rejected—
this one has become the cornerstone,[g](J)

and

A stone to stumble over,
and a rock to trip over.[h](K)

They stumble because they disobey the word; they were destined(L) for this.

But you are a chosen race,[i][j](M) a royal priesthood,[k](N) a holy nation,[l](O) a people for his possession,[m](P) so that you may proclaim the praises[n][o](Q) of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.(R) 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; you had not received mercy,(S) but now you have received mercy.

A Call to Good Works

11 Dear friends, I urge you as strangers and exiles(T) to abstain(U) from sinful(V) desires that wage war against the soul.(W) 12 Conduct(X) yourselves honorably among the Gentiles,[p] so that when they slander you as evildoers, they will observe your good works and will glorify God on the day he visits.(Y)

13 Submit(Z) to every human authority because of the Lord, whether to the emperor[q] as the supreme authority(AA) 14 or to governors as those sent out by him to punish those who do what is evil and to praise those who do what is good. 15 For it is God’s will(AB) that you silence the ignorance(AC) of foolish people by doing good. 16 Submit as free people, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil,(AD) but as God’s slaves.(AE) 17 Honor everyone. Love(AF) the brothers and sisters.(AG) Fear God.(AH) Honor the emperor.

Submission of Slaves to Masters

18 Household slaves, submit to your masters(AI) with all reverence(AJ) not only to the good and gentle ones but also to the cruel.(AK) 19 For it brings favor if, because of a consciousness of God, someone endures grief from suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is there if when you do wrong and are beaten, you endure it? But when you do what is good and suffer,(AL) if you endure it, this brings favor with God.

21 For you were called to this, because Christ also suffered(AM) for you, leaving you an example,(AN) that you should follow(AO) in his steps. 22 He did not commit sin,(AP) and no deceit(AQ) was found in his mouth;[r](AR) 23 when he was insulted, he did not insult in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten but entrusted himself to the one who judges(AS) justly. 24 He himself bore our sins(AT) in his body(AU) on the tree;(AV) so that, having died to sins,(AW) we might live for righteousness.(AX) By his wounds[s](AY) you have been healed. 25 For you were like sheep going astray,[t](AZ) but you have now returned to the Shepherd(BA) and Overseer[u] of your souls.
