Hosea 5:13-6:6
English Standard Version
13 When Ephraim saw his sickness,
and Judah (A)his wound,
then Ephraim went (B)to Assyria,
and sent to the great king.[a]
(C)But he is not able to cure you
or heal (D)your wound.
14 For I will be (E)like a lion to (F)Ephraim,
and like a young lion to the house of (G)Judah.
(H)I, even I, will tear and go away;
I will carry off, and no one shall rescue.
15 (I)I will return again to my place,
until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face,
and (J)in their distress earnestly seek me.
Israel and Judah Are Unrepentant
6 “Come, let us (K)return to the Lord;
for (L)he has torn us, that he may heal us;
he has struck us down, and (M)he will bind us up.
2 After two days (N)he will revive us;
on the third day he will raise us up,
that we may live before him.
3 (O)Let us know; (P)let us press on to know the Lord;
(Q)his going out is sure as the dawn;
he will come to us (R)as the showers,
(S)as the spring rains that water the earth.”
4 What shall I do with you, (T)O (U)Ephraim?
What shall I do with you, O (V)Judah?
Your love is (W)like a morning cloud,
(X)like the dew that goes early away.
5 Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets;
I have slain them (Y)by the words of my mouth,
and my judgment goes forth as the light.
6 For (Z)I desire steadfast love[b] and not sacrifice,
(AA)the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

Jesus Calls Matthew
9 (A)As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called (B)Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.
10 And as Jesus[a] reclined at table in the house, behold, many (C)tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, (D)“Why does your teacher eat with (E)tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Go and learn (F)what this means: (G)‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For (H)I came not to call the righteous, (I)but sinners.”
A Question About Fasting
14 Then (J)the disciples of John came to him, saying, (K)“Why do we and (L)the Pharisees fast,[b] but your disciples do not fast?” 15 And Jesus said to them, (M)“Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? (N)The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and (O)then they will fast. 16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made. 17 Neither is new wine put into old (P)wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”
