Herren vill ha tillbaka sitt folk
12 Israel vänder kappan efter vinden och utsätter sig för stor fara. Han har nämligen gett gåvor till Egypten och Assyrien i hopp om hjälp men får bara lyssna till värdelösa löften.
2 Men Herren har också saker att ställa Juda till svars för. Alla Jakobs ättlingar ska få sitt rättvisa straff.
3 När Jakob föddes kämpade han med sin bror, och som vuxen man kämpade han med Gud.
4 Ja, han kämpade och vann seger. Han grät och bad om välsignelse, och han fick möta Gud ansikte mot ansikte där vid Betel. Gud talade med honom, han som är
5 Herren, härskarornas Gud. Ja, Herren är hans namn.
6 Men du måste återvända till din Gud! Lev rättfärdigt och kärleksfullt och lita på din Gud.
7 Men mitt folk uppträder som ohederliga köpmän som väger upp sina varor med falska vikter.
8 De skryter och säger: Jag är så rik, och allt har jag skaffat mig själv! Men rikedom väger lätt mot synd!
9 Jag är Herren, din Gud, som befriade dig från slaveriet i Egypten, och jag är den som ska låta dig bo i tält igen, som du gör varje år under Lövhyddohögtiden.
10 Jag sände mina profeter för att varna dig med många syner, liknelser och drömmar.
11 Men synden från Gilgal härjar som tidigare, och i rad efter rad, som fåror i en åker, står altaren resta till avgudar. Gilead är också fyllt av dårar, som tillber dessa avgudar.
12 Jakob flydde till Aram och förtjänade en hustru genom att vakta får.
13 Sedan förde Herren sitt folk ut ur Egypten genom en profet, som ledde och försvarade dem.
14 Men Israel har på ett våldsamt sätt provocerat Herren, har blod på sina händer och kan räkna med Herrens straffdom.

English Standard Version
12 Ephraim feeds on the wind
and pursues (A)the east wind all day long;
they multiply (B)falsehood and violence;
(C)they make a covenant with Assyria,
and (D)oil is carried to Egypt.
The Lord's Indictment of Israel and Judah
2 (E)The Lord has an indictment against Judah
and will punish Jacob according to his ways;
he will repay him according to his deeds.
3 (F)In the womb he took his brother by the heel,
and in his manhood he strove with God.
4 He strove with the angel and prevailed;
he wept and sought his favor.
(G)He met God[a] at Bethel,
and there God spoke with us—
5 the Lord, the God of hosts,
(H)the Lord is his memorial name:
6 “So you, (I)by the help of your God, return,
(J)hold fast to love and justice,
and wait continually for your God.”
7 A merchant, in whose hands are (K)false balances,
he loves (L)to oppress.
8 Ephraim has said, “Ah, but (M)I am rich;
I have found wealth for myself;
in all my labors (N)they cannot find in me iniquity or sin.”
9 (O)I am the Lord your God
from the land of Egypt;
I will again make you (P)dwell in tents,
as in the days of the appointed feast.
10 (Q)I spoke to the prophets;
it was I who multiplied (R)visions,
and through the prophets gave parables.
11 (S)If there is iniquity in Gilead,
they shall surely come to nothing:
(T)in Gilgal they sacrifice bulls;
(U)their altars also are like stone heaps
(V)on the furrows of the field.
12 (W)Jacob fled to the land of Aram;
there Israel (X)served for a wife,
and for a wife he guarded sheep.
13 By (Y)a prophet (Z)the Lord brought Israel up from Egypt,
and by a prophet he was guarded.
14 (AA)Ephraim has given bitter provocation;
so his Lord (AB)will leave his bloodguilt on him
(AC)and will repay him for his disgraceful deeds.

2 The Lord has an indictment against Judah,
and will punish Jacob according to his ways,
and repay him according to his deeds.
3 In the womb he tried to supplant his brother,
and in his manhood he strove with God.
4 He strove with the angel and prevailed,
he wept and sought his favour;
he met him at Bethel,
and there he spoke with him.[a]
5 The Lord the God of hosts,
the Lord is his name!
6 But as for you, return to your God,
hold fast to love and justice,
and wait continually for your God.
7 A trader, in whose hands are false balances,
he loves to oppress.
8 Ephraim has said, ‘Ah, I am rich,
I have gained wealth for myself;
in all of my gain
no offence has been found in me
that would be sin.’[b]
9 I am the Lord your God
from the land of Egypt;
I will make you live in tents again,
as on the days of the appointed festival.
10 I spoke to the prophets;
it was I who multiplied visions,
and through the prophets I will bring destruction.
11 In Gilead[c] there is iniquity,
they shall surely come to nothing.
In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls,
so their altars shall be like stone heaps
on the furrows of the field.
12 Jacob fled to the land of Aram;
there Israel served for a wife,
and for a wife he guarded sheep.[d]
13 By a prophet the Lord brought Israel up from Egypt,
and by a prophet he was guarded.
14 Ephraim has given bitter offence,
so his Lord will bring his crimes down on him
and pay him back for his insults.
