11 Is Gilead wicked?(A)
    Its people are worthless!
Do they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal?(B)
    Their altars will be like piles of stones
    on a plowed field.(C)
12 Jacob fled to the country of Aram[a];(D)
    Israel served to get a wife,
    and to pay for her he tended sheep.(E)
13 The Lord used a prophet to bring Israel up from Egypt,(F)
    by a prophet he cared for him.(G)
14 But Ephraim has aroused his bitter anger;
    his Lord will leave on him the guilt of his bloodshed(H)
    and will repay him for his contempt.(I)

The Lord’s Anger Against Israel

13 When Ephraim spoke, people trembled;(J)
    he was exalted(K) in Israel.
    But he became guilty of Baal worship(L) and died.
Now they sin more and more;
    they make(M) idols for themselves from their silver,(N)
cleverly fashioned images,
    all of them the work of craftsmen.(O)
It is said of these people,
    “They offer human sacrifices!
    They kiss[b](P) calf-idols!(Q)
Therefore they will be like the morning mist,
    like the early dew that disappears,(R)
    like chaff(S) swirling from a threshing floor,(T)
    like smoke(U) escaping through a window.
