Hosea 11:12-13:14
New King James Version
God’s Charge Against Ephraim
12 “Ephraim has encircled Me with lies,
And the house of Israel with deceit;
But Judah still walks with God,
Even with the [a]Holy One who is faithful.
Ephraim’s Sins Rebuked by God
12 “Ephraim (A)feeds on the wind,
And pursues the east wind;
He daily increases lies and [b]desolation.
(B)Also they make a [c]covenant with the Assyrians,
And (C)oil is carried to Egypt.
2 “The(D) Lord also brings a [d]charge against Judah,
And will punish Jacob according to his ways;
According to his deeds He will recompense him.
3 He took his brother (E)by the heel in the womb,
And in his strength he (F)struggled with God.
4 Yes, he struggled with the Angel and prevailed;
He wept, and sought favor from Him.
He found Him in (G)Bethel,
And there He spoke to us—
5 That is, the Lord God of hosts.
The Lord is His (H)memorable name.
6 (I)So you, by the help of your God, return;
Observe mercy and justice,
And wait on your God continually.
7 “A cunning [e]Canaanite!
(J)Deceitful scales are in his hand;
He loves to oppress.
8 And Ephraim said,
(K)‘Surely I have become rich,
I have found wealth for myself;
In all my labors
They shall find in me no iniquity that is sin.’
9 “But I am the Lord your God,
Ever since the land of Egypt;
(L)I will again make you dwell in tents,
As in the days of the appointed feast.
10 (M)I have also spoken by the prophets,
And have multiplied visions;
I have given [f]symbols [g]through the witness of the prophets.”
11 Though (N)Gilead has idols—
Surely they are [h]vanity—
Though they sacrifice bulls in (O)Gilgal,
Indeed their altars shall be heaps in the furrows of the field.
12 Jacob (P)fled to the country of Syria;
(Q)Israel served for a spouse,
And for a wife he tended sheep.
13 (R)By a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt,
And by a prophet he was preserved.
14 Ephraim (S)provoked Him to anger most bitterly;
Therefore his Lord will leave the guilt of his bloodshed upon him,
(T)And return his reproach upon him.
Relentless Judgment on Israel
13 When Ephraim spoke, trembling,
He exalted himself in Israel;
But when he offended through Baal worship, he died.
2 Now they sin more and more,
And have made for themselves molded images,
Idols of their silver, according to their skill;
All of it is the work of craftsmen.
They say of them,
“Let [i]the men who sacrifice [j]kiss the calves!”
3 Therefore they shall be like the morning cloud
And like the early dew that passes away,
(U)Like chaff blown off from a threshing floor
And like smoke from a chimney.
4 “Yet (V)I am the Lord your God
Ever since the land of Egypt,
And you shall know no God but Me;
For (W)there is no savior besides Me.
5 (X)I [k]knew you in the wilderness,
(Y)In the land of [l]great drought.
6 (Z)When they had pasture, they were filled;
They were filled and their heart was exalted;
Therefore they forgot Me.
7 “So (AA)I will be to them like a lion;
Like (AB)a leopard by the road I will lurk;
8 I will meet them (AC)like a bear deprived of her cubs;
I will tear open their rib cage,
And there I will devour them like a lion.
The [m]wild beast shall tear them.
9 “O Israel, [n]you are destroyed,
But [o]your help is from Me.
10 [p]I will be your King;
(AD)Where is any other,
That he may save you in all your cities?
And your judges to whom (AE)you said,
‘Give me a king and princes’?
11 (AF)I gave you a king in My anger,
And took him away in My wrath.
12 “The(AG) iniquity of Ephraim is bound up;
His sin is stored up.
13 (AH)The sorrows of a woman in childbirth shall come upon him.
He is an unwise son,
For he should not stay long where children are born.
14 “I will ransom them from the [q]power of [r]the grave;
I will redeem them from death.
(AI)O Death, [s]I will be your plagues!
O [t]Grave, [u]I will be your destruction!
(AJ)Pity is hidden from My eyes.”

Hosea 11:12-13:14
New American Standard Bible
12 [a]Ephraim surrounds Me with (A)lies
And the house of Israel with deceit;
[b]Judah is still unruly against God,
Even against the Holy One who is faithful.
Ephraim Reminded
12 [c]Ephraim feeds on (B)wind,
And pursues the (C)east wind continually;
He multiplies lies and violence.
Moreover, [d]he makes a covenant with Assyria,
And oil is brought to Egypt.
2 The Lord also has a (D)case against Judah,
And will punish Jacob (E)according to his ways;
He will repay him according to his deeds.
3 In the womb he (F)took his brother by the heel,
And in his mature strength he (G)contended with God.
4 Yes, he wrestled with the angel and prevailed;
He wept and (H)implored His favor.
He found Him at (I)Bethel,
And there He spoke with us,
5 And the Lord, the God of armies,
The Lord is His [e](J)name.
6 So as for you, (K)return to your God,
(L)Maintain [f]kindness and justice,
And (M)wait for your God continually.
7 A [g]merchant, in whose hands are fraudulent (N)balances,
Loves to exploit.
8 And Ephraim said, “I have certainly become (O)rich,
I have found wealth for myself;
In all my labors they will find in me
(P)No wrongdoing, which would be sin.”
9 But I have been the Lord your God since the land of Egypt;
I will make you (Q)live in tents again,
As in the days of the appointed festival.
10 I have also spoken to the (R)prophets,
And I [h]provided many visions,
And through the prophets I spoke in (S)parables.
11 Is there injustice in Gilead?
Certainly they are worthless.
In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls,
Yes, (T)their altars are like stone heaps
Beside the furrows of a field.
12 Now (U)Jacob fled to the [i]land of Aram,
And (V)Israel worked for a wife,
And for a wife he kept sheep.
13 But by a (W)prophet the Lord brought Israel up from Egypt,
And by a prophet he was protected.
14 (X)Ephraim has provoked God to bitter anger;
So his Lord will leave his (Y)guilt for bloodshed on him
And bring his (Z)disgrace back to him.
Ephraim’s Idolatry
13 (AA)When Ephraim [j]spoke, there was trembling.
He (AB)exalted himself in Israel,
But through (AC)Baal he incurred guilt and died.
2 And now they sin more and more,
And make for themselves (AD)cast metal images,
Idols [k](AE)skillfully made from their silver,
All of them the (AF)work of craftsmen.
They say of them, “Let the [l]people who sacrifice kiss the (AG)calves!”
3 Therefore they will be like the (AH)morning cloud
And like dew which [m]soon disappears,
Like (AI)chaff which is blown away from the threshing floor,
And like (AJ)smoke from a chimney.
4 Yet I have been the (AK)Lord your God
Since the land of Egypt;
And you were not to know (AL)any god except Me,
For there is no savior (AM)besides Me.
5 I [n](AN)cared for you in the wilderness,
(AO)In the land of drought.
6 As they had their pasture, they became (AP)satisfied,
And as they became satisfied, their (AQ)heart became proud;
Therefore they (AR)forgot Me.
7 So I will be (AS)like a lion to them;
Like a (AT)leopard I will [o]lie in wait by the wayside.
8 I will confront them (AU)like a bear deprived of her cubs,
And I will tear open [p]their chests;
I will also (AV)devour them there like a lioness,
As a wild animal would tear them to pieces.
9 [q]It is to your own destruction, Israel,
That you are (AW)against Me, against your (AX)help.
10 Where then is your (AY)king,
That he might save you in all your cities;
And your (AZ)judges, to whom you said,
“Give me a king and princes”?
11 I (BA)gave you a king in My anger,
And (BB)took him away in My wrath.
12 The guilt of Ephraim is wrapped up;
His sin is (BC)stored up.
13 The pains of (BD)childbirth come on him;
He is (BE)not a wise son,
For [r]it is not the time that he should (BF)delay at the opening of the womb.
14 Shall I (BG)ransom them from the [s]power of Sheol?
Shall I redeem them from death?
(BH)Death, where are your [t]thorns?
Sheol, where is your sting?
(BI)Compassion will be hidden from My sight.
