as tribute to the great king.[c]
Ephraim shall be put to shame,
and Israel shall be ashamed of his idol.[d](B)
7 Samaria’s king shall perish
like a chip on the face of the waters.(C)

and to the hills, “Fall on us.”(D)
Hosea 10:5-8
Evangelical Heritage Version
5 The inhabitants of Samaria will be terrified because of the calf[a] of Beth Aven.
Yes, its people will mourn over it,
and its idolatrous priests will cry out over it,
over its lost glory, because it has gone into exile.
6 It will be carried to Assyria as tribute to the Great King.[b]
Ephraim will be gripped with shame,
and Israel will be ashamed of its own idol.[c]
7 Samaria, like her king, will be carried off
like a twig on the surface of the water.
8 The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel, will become unusable.
Thorns and thistles will grow on their altars.
They will say to the mountains, “Cover us!”
and to the hills, “Fall on us!”
