Hosea 10:5-8
New American Standard Bible
5 The inhabitants of Samaria will fear
For the [a](A)calf of (B)Beth-aven.
Indeed, its people will mourn for it,
And its (C)idolatrous priests [b]will cry out over it,
Over its (D)glory, since it has left it.
6 The thing itself will be brought to (E)Assyria
As a gift of tribute to [c](F)King Jareb;
Ephraim will [d]be (G)seized with shame,
And Israel will be ashamed of its (H)own plan.
7 Samaria will be (I)destroyed with her king,
Like a twig on the surface of the water.
8 Also the (J)high places of Aven, the (K)sin of Israel, will be destroyed;
(L)Thorns and thistles will grow on their altars;
Then they will (M)say to the mountains,
“Cover us!” And to the hills, “Fall on us!”

Hosea 10:5-8
Common English Bible
5 The inhabitants of Samaria shake
because of the calf of Beth-aven.
Its people will mourn over it,
just as its idolatrous priests who rejoiced over its glory that is now gone.
Shame and punishment
6 To Assyria it will be carried
as a gift for the great king.
Ephraim will be put to shame;
Israel will be ashamed of his own idol.
7 Samaria will be cut off;
her king is like a chip of wood on the surface of the water.
8 The sin of Israel, the shrines of Aven
will be torn down.
Thorn and thistle will sprout up
on their altars.
They will say to the mountains, “Cover us,”
to the hills, “Fall on us.”
