Rejoice not, O Israel, [a]for joy, like the peoples; [b]for thou hast played the harlot, departing from thy God; thou hast loved hire upon every grain-floor. The threshing-floor and the winepress shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail her. They shall not dwell in Jehovah’s land; but Ephraim shall return to Egypt, and they shall eat unclean food in Assyria. They shall not pour out wine-offerings to Jehovah, [c]neither shall they be pleasing unto him: their sacrifices shall be unto them as the bread of mourners; all that eat thereof shall be polluted; for their bread shall be for their appetite; it shall not come into the house of Jehovah. What will ye do in the day of solemn assembly, and in the day of the feast of Jehovah? For, lo, they are gone away from destruction; yet Egypt shall gather them up, Memphis shall bury them; their pleasant things of silver, nettles shall possess them; thorns shall be in their tents. The days of visitation are come, the days of recompense are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the man that hath the spirit is mad, for the abundance of thine iniquity, and because the enmity is great. Ephraim [d]was a watchman with my God: as for the prophet, a fowler’s snare is in all his ways, and enmity in the house of his God. They have deeply corrupted themselves, as in the days of Gibeah: he will remember their iniquity, he will visit their sins.

10 I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the first-ripe in the fig-tree at its first season: but they came to Baal-peor, and [e]consecrated themselves unto the [f]shameful thing, and became abominable like that which they loved. 11 As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird: there shall be no birth, and none with child, and no conception. 12 Though they bring up their children, yet will I bereave them, so that not a man shall be left: yea, woe also to them when I depart from them! 13 Ephraim, [g]like as I have seen Tyre, is planted in a pleasant place: but Ephraim shall bring out his children to the slayer. 14 Give them, O Jehovah—what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts. 15 All their wickedness is in Gilgal; for there I hated them: because of the wickedness of their doings I will drive them out of my house; I will love them no more; all their princes are revolters. 16 Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit: yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay the beloved fruit of their womb. 17 My God will cast them away, because they did not hearken unto him; and they shall be wanderers among the nations.

Ephraim Faces Punishment

Do not rejoice, O Israel,
do not exult like the nations!
For you played the whore, departing from your God;
    you loved a harlot’s wage
on all the threshing floors of grain.
    Threshing floor and wine vat will not feed them,
and new wine will fail her.[a]
    They will not remain
        in the land of Yahweh.
But Ephraim will return to Egypt,
    and in Assyria they will eat unclean food.
They will not pour drink offerings of wine to Yahweh,
    and their sacrifices will not please him.
They are like mourners’ bread for them;
    all those who eat it will be defiled.
For their bread will be for their hunger;[b]
    it will not come to the house of Yahweh.
What will you do on the day of the appointed time,
    and on the day of the festival of Yahweh?
For look! If they flee from the destruction,
    Egypt will gather them;
    Memphis[c] will bury them.
Nettles will possess
    their precious things of silver;
        thorns will be in their tents.
The days of punishment have come;
the days of retribution have come;
    Israel knows!
The prophet is a fool,
    the man of the spirit is acting like a madman.
Because of the greatness of your sin,
    your hostility is great.
The prophet keeps watch over Ephraim for my God;
    the snare of a fowler is on all his ways,
    and hostility in the house of his God.
They deeply corrupted themselves[d]
    as in the days of Gibeah;
he will remember their sin,
    he will punish their sins.
10 Like the grapes in the wilderness,
    I found Israel.
Like early ripened fruit on the fig tree in the first season,[e]
    I saw your ancestors.[f]
They themselves came to Baal Peor,
    and they consecrated themselves to shame.
And they became detestable things,
    like the thing they love.[g]
11 Ephraim’s glory is like a bird;
    it will fly away—
        no birth, no pregnancy, and no conception.
12 Even though they bring up their children,
    I will bereave them before maturity.[h]
Woe to them indeed,
    when I depart from them!
13 Ephraim, as I see it,
    is like a palm in a meadow;
but Ephraim must bring out
    his children to the slayer.
14 Give them, O Yahweh—
    what will you give them?
Give them a miscarrying womb
    and dry breasts.
15 Every evil of theirs began at Gilgal,
    so I began to hate them there;
because of the evil of their deeds
    I will drive them out from my house.
I will love them no more;
    all their officials are rebels.
16 Ephraim is stricken,
    their root is dried up,
        they shall not bear fruit.
Even if they give birth,
    I will kill the cherished offspring of their womb.
17 My God will reject them
    because they did not listen to him,
        and they will be wanderers among the nations.
