5 So I have cut them in pieces by the men who speak for Me. I have killed them by the words of My mouth. My punishments come upon you like lightning. 6 I want loving-kindness and not a gift to be given in worship. I want people to know God instead of giving burnt gifts. 7 But like Adam they have sinned against the agreement. They were not faithful to Me there.

5 Therefore I cut you in pieces with my prophets,
I killed you with the words of my mouth(A)—
then my judgments go forth like the sun.[a](B)
6 For I desire mercy, not sacrifice,(C)
and acknowledgment(D) of God rather than burnt offerings.(E)
7 As at Adam,[b] they have broken the covenant;(F)
they were unfaithful(G) to me there.
