Restoration of Israel

14 “Therefore, behold, I am going to persuade her,
(A)Bring her into the wilderness,
And speak [a]kindly to her.
15 Then I will give her her (B)vineyards from there,
And (C)the [b]Valley of Achor as a door of hope.
And she will [c](D)respond there as in the days of her youth,
As in the (E)day when she went up from the land of Egypt.
16 And it will come about on that day,” declares the Lord,
“That you will call Me [d](F)my husband
And no longer call Me my [e]Baal.
17 For (G)I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth,
So that they will no longer be [f]mentioned by their names.
18 On that day I will also make a covenant for them
With the (H)animals of the field,
The birds of the sky,
And the crawling things of the ground.
And I will [g](I)eliminate the bow, the sword, and war from the land,
And will let them (J)lie down in safety.
19 I will (K)betroth you to Me forever;
Yes, I will betroth you to Me in (L)righteousness and in justice,
In favor and in compassion,
20 And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness.
Then you will (M)know the Lord.

21 “And it will come about on that day that (N)I will respond,” declares the Lord.
“I will respond to the heavens, and they will respond to the earth,
22 And the (O)earth will respond to the grain, to the new wine, and to the oil,
And they will respond to [h]Jezreel.
23 I will (P)sow her for Myself in the land.
(Q)I will also have compassion on [i]her who had not obtained compassion,
And (R)I will say to [j]those who were (S)not My people,
‘You are My people!’
And [k]they will say, ‘You are my God!’”

Hosea’s Redemption of Gomer

Then the Lord said to me, “Go again, love [l]a woman who is loved by her [m]husband, yet is committing adultery, (T)as the Lord loves the sons of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love [n]raisin (U)cakes.” So I (V)purchased her for myself for fifteen shekels of silver, and a [o]homer and a [p]lethech of barley. Then I said to her, “You shall (W)live with me for many days. You shall not play the prostitute, nor shall you have another man; so I will also be toward you.” For the sons of Israel will live for many days (X)without a king or leader, (Y)without sacrifice or (Z)memorial stone, and without (AA)ephod or [q](AB)household idols. Afterward the sons of Israel will (AC)return and seek the Lord their God and (AD)David their king; and (AE)they will come trembling to the Lord and to His goodness in the last days.

God’s Controversy with Israel

(AF)Listen to the word of the Lord, you sons of Israel,
Because the Lord has a (AG)case against the inhabitants of the land,
For there is (AH)no [r]faithfulness, nor [s]loyalty,
Nor (AI)knowledge of God in the land.
There is (AJ)oath-taking, (AK)[t]denial, (AL)murder, (AM)stealing, and (AN)adultery.
They employ violence, so that (AO)bloodshed [u]follows bloodshed.
Therefore the land (AP)mourns,
And everyone who lives in it languishes
Along with the animals of the field and the birds of the sky,
And even the fish of the sea [v]disappear.

Yet let no one [w](AQ)find fault, and let no one rebuke;
For your people are like those who (AR)contend with a priest.
So you will (AS)stumble by day,
And the prophet also will stumble with you by night;
And I will destroy your (AT)mother.
(AU)My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
Since you have (AV)rejected knowledge,
I also will (AW)reject you from being My priest.
Since you have (AX)forgotten the (AY)Law of your God,
I also will forget your children.

The more they (AZ)multiplied, the more they sinned against Me;
I will (BA)change their glory into shame.
They (BB)feed on the [x]sin of My people,
And (BC)long for their wrongdoing.
And it will be, like people, (BD)like priest;
So I will (BE)punish them for their ways
And repay them for their deeds.
10 (BF)They will eat, but not have enough;
They will (BG)play the prostitute, but not [y]increase,
Because they (BH)gave up devoting themselves to the Lord.

11 [z]Infidelity, (BI)wine, and new wine take away the [aa]understanding.
12 My people (BJ)consult their wooden idol, and their diviner’s wand informs them;
For a spirit of infidelity has led them astray,
And they have been unfaithful, departing [ab]from their God.
13 They offer sacrifices on the (BK)tops of the mountains
And [ac](BL)burn incense on the hills,
(BM)Under oak, poplar, and terebinth,
Because their shade is pleasant.
Therefore your daughters play the prostitute,
And your [ad]brides commit adultery.
14 I will not punish your daughters when they play the prostitute,
Or your [ae]brides when they commit adultery,
Because the men themselves slip away with the prostitutes
And offer sacrifices with (BN)temple prostitutes;
So the people without understanding are ruined.

15 Though you, Israel, play the prostitute,
Judah must not become guilty;
Also you are not to go to (BO)Gilgal,
Nor go up to Beth-aven
(BP)And take the oath:
“As the Lord lives!”
16 Since Israel is (BQ)stubborn
Like a stubborn cow,
[af]Will the Lord now (BR)pasture them
Like a lamb in a large field?
17 Ephraim is allied with (BS)idols;
(BT)Leave him alone.
18 Their liquor is gone,
They prostitute themselves continually;
[ag](BU)Their [ah]rulers dearly love shame.
19 (BV)The wind wraps them in its wings,
And they will be [ai]put to shame because of their sacrifices.

The People’s Apostasy Rebuked

Hear this, you priests!
Pay attention, house of Israel!
Listen, you of the house of the king!
For the judgment applies to you,
Because you have been a (BW)trap at Mizpah,
And a net spread out on Tabor.
And the (BX)rebels have (BY)gone deep in [aj]depravity,
But I will discipline all of them.
I (BZ)know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from Me;
Because now, Ephraim, you have been unfaithful,
Israel has defiled itself.
Their deeds will not allow them
To return to their God.
For a (CA)spirit of [ak]infidelity is within them,
And they (CB)do not know the Lord.
Moreover, the (CC)pride of Israel testifies against him,
And Israel and Ephraim stumble in their wrongdoing;
(CD)Judah also has stumbled with them.
They will (CE)go with their flocks and herds
To seek the Lord, but they will (CF)not find Him;
He has (CG)withdrawn from them.
They have (CH)dealt treacherously with the Lord,
For they have given birth to [al](CI)illegitimate children.
Now the (CJ)new moon will devour them with their [am]land.

(CK)Blow the horn in (CL)Gibeah,
And the trumpet in Ramah.
Sound an alarm at Beth-aven:
(CM)Behind you, Benjamin!”
Ephraim will become a (CN)desolation in the (CO)day of rebuke;
Among the tribes of Israel I (CP)make known what is trustworthy.
10 The leaders of Judah have become like those who (CQ)displace a boundary marker;
On them I will (CR)pour out My anger (CS)like water.
11 Ephraim is (CT)oppressed, broken by judgment,
(CU)Because he was determined to follow [an]man’s command.
12 Therefore I am like a (CV)moth to Ephraim,
And like rottenness to the house of Judah.
13 When Ephraim saw his sickness,
And Judah his [ao]sore,
Ephraim then went to (CW)Assyria
And sent word to [ap](CX)King Jareb.
But he is (CY)unable to heal you,
Or to cure you of your [aq]sore.
14 For I will be (CZ)like a lion to Ephraim
And like a young lion to the house of Judah.
(DA)I, yes I, will tear to pieces and go away,
I will carry away, and there will be (DB)no one to rescue.
15 I will go away and return to My place
Until they [ar](DC)acknowledge their guilt and seek My face;
In their distress they will (DD)search for Me.

The Response to God’s Rebuke

(DE)Come, let’s return to the Lord.
For (DF)He has torn us, but (DG)He will heal us;
He has [as]wounded us, but He will (DH)bandage us.
He will (DI)revive us after two days;
He will (DJ)raise us up on the third day,
That we may live before Him.
So let’s (DK)learn, let’s press on to know the Lord.
His (DL)appearance is as sure as the dawn;
And He will come to us like the (DM)rain,
As the spring rain waters the earth.”

What shall I do with you, (DN)Ephraim?
What shall I do with you, Judah?
For your loyalty is like a (DO)morning cloud,
And like the dew which goes away early.
Therefore I have (DP)cut them in pieces by the prophets;
I have slain them by the (DQ)words of My mouth;
And the judgments on you are like the light that [at]shines.
For (DR)I [au]desire loyalty (DS)rather than sacrifice,
And the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
But (DT)like [av]Adam they have (DU)violated the covenant;
There they have (DV)dealt treacherously with Me.
(DW)Gilead is a city of wrongdoers,
Tracked with (DX)bloody footprints.
And as a (DY)band of robbers lie in wait for a person,
So a band of priests (DZ)murder on the way to Shechem;
Certainly they have committed an act of (EA)infamy.
10 In the house of Israel I have seen a (EB)horrible thing;
Ephraim’s (EC)infidelity is there, Israel has defiled itself.
11 Also, Judah, there is a (ED)harvest appointed for you,
When I (EE)restore the fortunes of My people.

Ephraim’s Wrongdoing

When I (EF)would heal Israel,
The wrongdoing of Ephraim is uncovered,
And the evil deeds of Samaria,
For they practice (EG)deception;
The thief enters,
A band of (EH)robbers attack outside,
And they do not [aw]consider in their hearts
That I (EI)remember all their wickedness.
Now their (EJ)deeds surround them;
They are before My face.
(EK)With their wickedness they make the (EL)king happy,
And the officials with their (EM)lies.
They are (EN)all adulterers,
Like an oven heated by the baker,
Who stops [ax]stoking the fire
From the time the dough is kneaded until it is leavened.
On the [ay]day of our king, the officials (EO)became sick with the heat of wine;
He stretched out his hand with [az](EP)scoffers,
For their hearts are like an (EQ)oven
As they approach their [ba]plotting;
Their [bb]anger [bc]smolders all night,
In the morning it burns like flaming fire.
All of them are hot like an oven,
And they consume their (ER)rulers;
All their kings have fallen.
(ES)None of them calls on Me.

Ephraim is himself (ET)thrown about with the [bd]nations;
Ephraim has become a round loaf not turned over.
(EU)Strangers devour his strength,
Yet he (EV)does not know it;
Gray hairs also are sprinkled on him,
Yet he does not know it.
10 Though the (EW)pride of Israel testifies against him,
Yet (EX)they have not returned to the Lord their God,
Nor have they sought Him, despite all this.
11 So (EY)Ephraim has become like a gullible dove, (EZ)without [be]sense;
They call to (FA)Egypt, they go to (FB)Assyria.
12 When they go, I will (FC)spread My net over them;
I will bring them down like the birds of the sky.
I will (FD)discipline them in accordance with the [bf]proclamation to their assembly.
13 (FE)Woe to them, for they have (FF)strayed from Me!
Destruction is theirs, for they have rebelled against Me!
I (FG)would redeem them, but they have spoken lies against Me.
14 And (FH)they do not cry to Me from their heart
When they wail on their beds;
For the sake of grain and new wine they [bg](FI)assemble themselves,
They (FJ)turn against Me.
15 Although I trained and strengthened their arms,
Yet they (FK)devise evil against Me.
16 They turn, but not [bh]upward,
They are like a (FL)loose bow;
Their officials will fall by the sword
Because of the [bi](FM)insolence of their tongue.
This will be their (FN)derision in the land of Egypt.

Israel Reaps the Whirlwind

(FO)Put the trumpet to your [bj]lips!
(FP)Like an eagle the enemy comes (FQ)against the house of the Lord,
Because they have (FR)violated My covenant
And rebelled against My (FS)Law.
(FT)They cry out to Me,
“My God, (FU)we of Israel know You!”
Israel has rejected the good;
The enemy will pursue him.
(FV)They have set up kings, but not by Me;
They have appointed officials, but I did not know it.
With their (FW)silver and gold they have made idols for themselves,
So that [bk]they will be eliminated.
[bl]He has rejected your (FX)calf, Samaria, saying,
“My anger burns against them!”
How long will they be incapable of (FY)innocence?
For from Israel comes even this!
A (FZ)craftsman made it, so it is not God;
Assuredly, the calf of Samaria will be broken to [bm]pieces.
For (GA)they sow wind
And they harvest a (GB)storm.
The standing grain has no [bn]kernels;
It yields (GC)no [bo]grain.
If it were to yield, strangers would swallow it.

Israel has been (GD)swallowed up;
They are now among the nations
Like a (GE)vessel in which no one delights.
For they have gone up to (GF)Assyria,
Like (GG)a wild donkey all alone;
Ephraim has (GH)paid fees for [bp]lovers.
10 Even though they [bq]pay for allies among the nations,
I will (GI)gather them up now;
And they will begin (GJ)to diminish
Because of the burden of the (GK)king of officials.

11 Since Ephraim has (GL)multiplied altars for sin,
They have become altars of sinning for him.
12 Though (GM)I wrote for him ten thousand precepts of My (GN)Law,
They are regarded as a strange thing.
13 As for My (GO)sacrificial gifts,
They (GP)sacrifice the flesh and eat it,
But the Lord has taken no delight in them.
Now He will (GQ)remember their guilt,
And (GR)punish them for their sins;
They will return to (GS)Egypt.
14 For Israel has (GT)forgotten his Maker and (GU)built palaces;
And Judah has multiplied fortified cities,
But I will send a (GV)fire on its cities, and it will consume its palatial buildings.

14 “Therefore I am now going to allure her;
    I will lead her into the wilderness(A)
    and speak tenderly to her.
15 There I will give her back her vineyards,
    and will make the Valley of Achor[a](B) a door of hope.
There she will respond[b](C) as in the days of her youth,(D)
    as in the day she came up out of Egypt.(E)

16 “In that day,” declares the Lord,
    “you will call me ‘my husband’;(F)
    you will no longer call me ‘my master.[c]
17 I will remove the names of the Baals from her lips;(G)
    no longer will their names be invoked.(H)
18 In that day I will make a covenant for them
    with the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky
    and the creatures that move along the ground.(I)
Bow and sword and battle
    I will abolish(J) from the land,
    so that all may lie down in safety.(K)
19 I will betroth(L) you to me forever;
    I will betroth you in[d] righteousness and justice,(M)
    in[e] love and compassion.(N)
20 I will betroth you in[f] faithfulness,
    and you will acknowledge(O) the Lord.(P)

21 “In that day I will respond,”
    declares the Lord
“I will respond(Q) to the skies,
    and they will respond to the earth;
22 and the earth will respond to the grain,
    the new wine and the olive oil,(R)
    and they will respond to Jezreel.[g](S)
23 I will plant(T) her for myself in the land;
    I will show my love to the one I called ‘Not my loved one.[h](U)
I will say to those called ‘Not my people,[i]’ ‘You are my people’;(V)
    and they will say, ‘You are my God.(W)’”

Hosea’s Reconciliation With His Wife

The Lord said to me, “Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another man and is an adulteress.(X) Love her as the Lord loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes.(Y)

So I bought her for fifteen shekels[j] of silver and about a homer and a lethek[k] of barley. Then I told her, “You are to live with me many days; you must not be a prostitute or be intimate with any man, and I will behave the same way toward you.”

For the Israelites will live many days without king or prince,(Z) without sacrifice(AA) or sacred stones,(AB) without ephod(AC) or household gods.(AD) Afterward the Israelites will return and seek(AE) the Lord their God and David their king.(AF) They will come trembling(AG) to the Lord and to his blessings in the last days.(AH)

The Charge Against Israel

Hear the word of the Lord, you Israelites,
    because the Lord has a charge(AI) to bring
    against you who live in the land:(AJ)
“There is no faithfulness,(AK) no love,
    no acknowledgment(AL) of God in the land.(AM)
There is only cursing,[l] lying(AN) and murder,(AO)
    stealing(AP) and adultery;(AQ)
they break all bounds,
    and bloodshed follows bloodshed.(AR)
Because of this the land dries up,(AS)
    and all who live in it waste away;(AT)
the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky
    and the fish in the sea are swept away.(AU)

“But let no one bring a charge,
    let no one accuse another,
for your people are like those
    who bring charges against a priest.(AV)
You stumble(AW) day and night,
    and the prophets stumble with you.
So I will destroy your mother(AX)
    my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.(AY)

“Because you have rejected knowledge,
    I also reject you as my priests;
because you have ignored the law(AZ) of your God,
    I also will ignore your children.
The more priests there were,
    the more they sinned against me;
    they exchanged their glorious God[m](BA) for something disgraceful.(BB)
They feed on the sins of my people
    and relish their wickedness.(BC)
And it will be: Like people, like priests.(BD)
    I will punish both of them for their ways
    and repay them for their deeds.(BE)

10 “They will eat but not have enough;(BF)
    they will engage in prostitution(BG) but not flourish,
because they have deserted(BH) the Lord
    to give themselves 11 to prostitution;(BI)
old wine(BJ) and new wine
    take away their understanding.(BK)
12 My people consult a wooden idol,(BL)
    and a diviner’s rod speaks to them.(BM)
A spirit of prostitution(BN) leads them astray;(BO)
    they are unfaithful(BP) to their God.
13 They sacrifice on the mountaintops
    and burn offerings on the hills,
under oak,(BQ) poplar and terebinth,
    where the shade is pleasant.(BR)
Therefore your daughters turn to prostitution(BS)
    and your daughters-in-law to adultery.(BT)

14 “I will not punish your daughters
    when they turn to prostitution,
nor your daughters-in-law
    when they commit adultery,
because the men themselves consort with harlots(BU)
    and sacrifice with shrine prostitutes(BV)
    a people without understanding(BW) will come to ruin!(BX)

15 “Though you, Israel, commit adultery,
    do not let Judah become guilty.

“Do not go to Gilgal;(BY)
    do not go up to Beth Aven.[n](BZ)
    And do not swear, ‘As surely as the Lord lives!’(CA)
16 The Israelites are stubborn,(CB)
    like a stubborn heifer.(CC)
How then can the Lord pasture them
    like lambs(CD) in a meadow?
17 Ephraim is joined to idols;
    leave him alone!
18 Even when their drinks are gone,
    they continue their prostitution;
    their rulers dearly love shameful ways.
19 A whirlwind(CE) will sweep them away,
    and their sacrifices will bring them shame.(CF)

Judgment Against Israel

“Hear this, you priests!
    Pay attention, you Israelites!
Listen, royal house!
    This judgment(CG) is against you:
You have been a snare(CH) at Mizpah,
    a net(CI) spread out on Tabor.
The rebels are knee-deep in slaughter.(CJ)
    I will discipline all of them.(CK)
I know all about Ephraim;
    Israel is not hidden(CL) from me.
Ephraim, you have now turned to prostitution;
    Israel is corrupt.(CM)

“Their deeds do not permit them
    to return(CN) to their God.
A spirit of prostitution(CO) is in their heart;
    they do not acknowledge(CP) the Lord.
Israel’s arrogance testifies(CQ) against them;
    the Israelites, even Ephraim, stumble(CR) in their sin;
    Judah also stumbles with them.(CS)
When they go with their flocks and herds
    to seek the Lord,(CT)
they will not find him;
    he has withdrawn(CU) himself from them.
They are unfaithful(CV) to the Lord;
    they give birth to illegitimate(CW) children.
When they celebrate their New Moon feasts,(CX)
    he will devour[o](CY) their fields.

“Sound the trumpet(CZ) in Gibeah,(DA)
    the horn in Ramah.(DB)
Raise the battle cry in Beth Aven[p];(DC)
    lead on, Benjamin.
Ephraim will be laid waste(DD)
    on the day of reckoning.(DE)
Among the tribes of Israel
    I proclaim what is certain.(DF)
10 Judah’s leaders are like those
    who move boundary stones.(DG)
I will pour out my wrath(DH) on them
    like a flood of water.
11 Ephraim is oppressed,
    trampled in judgment,
    intent on pursuing idols.[q](DI)
12 I am like a moth(DJ) to Ephraim,
    like rot(DK) to the people of Judah.

13 “When Ephraim(DL) saw his sickness,
    and Judah his sores,
then Ephraim turned to Assyria,(DM)
    and sent to the great king for help.(DN)
But he is not able to cure(DO) you,
    not able to heal your sores.(DP)
14 For I will be like a lion(DQ) to Ephraim,
    like a great lion to Judah.
I will tear them to pieces(DR) and go away;
    I will carry them off, with no one to rescue them.(DS)
15 Then I will return to my lair(DT)
    until they have borne their guilt(DU)
    and seek my face(DV)
in their misery(DW)
    they will earnestly seek me.(DX)

Israel Unrepentant

“Come, let us return(DY) to the Lord.
He has torn us to pieces(DZ)
    but he will heal us;(EA)
he has injured us
    but he will bind up our wounds.(EB)
After two days he will revive us;(EC)
    on the third day(ED) he will restore(EE) us,
    that we may live in his presence.
Let us acknowledge the Lord;
    let us press on to acknowledge him.
As surely as the sun rises,
    he will appear;
he will come to us like the winter rains,(EF)
    like the spring rains that water the earth.(EG)

“What can I do with you, Ephraim?(EH)
    What can I do with you, Judah?
Your love is like the morning mist,
    like the early dew that disappears.(EI)
Therefore I cut you in pieces with my prophets,
    I killed you with the words of my mouth(EJ)
    then my judgments go forth like the sun.[r](EK)
For I desire mercy, not sacrifice,(EL)
    and acknowledgment(EM) of God rather than burnt offerings.(EN)
As at Adam,[s] they have broken the covenant;(EO)
    they were unfaithful(EP) to me there.
Gilead is a city of evildoers,(EQ)
    stained with footprints of blood.
As marauders lie in ambush for a victim,(ER)
    so do bands of priests;
they murder(ES) on the road to Shechem,
    carrying out their wicked schemes.(ET)
10 I have seen a horrible(EU) thing in Israel:
    There Ephraim is given to prostitution,
    Israel is defiled.(EV)

11 “Also for you, Judah,
    a harvest(EW) is appointed.

“Whenever I would restore the fortunes(EX) of my people,

whenever I would heal Israel,
the sins of Ephraim are exposed
    and the crimes of Samaria revealed.(EY)
They practice deceit,(EZ)
    thieves break into houses,(FA)
    bandits rob in the streets;(FB)
but they do not realize
    that I remember(FC) all their evil deeds.(FD)
Their sins engulf them;(FE)
    they are always before me.

“They delight the king with their wickedness,
    the princes with their lies.(FF)
They are all adulterers,(FG)
    burning like an oven
whose fire the baker need not stir
    from the kneading of the dough till it rises.
On the day of the festival of our king
    the princes become inflamed with wine,(FH)
    and he joins hands with the mockers.(FI)
Their hearts are like an oven;(FJ)
    they approach him with intrigue.
Their passion smolders all night;
    in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.
All of them are hot as an oven;
    they devour their rulers.
All their kings fall,(FK)
    and none of them calls(FL) on me.

“Ephraim mixes(FM) with the nations;
    Ephraim is a flat loaf not turned over.
Foreigners sap his strength,(FN)
    but he does not realize it.
His hair is sprinkled with gray,
    but he does not notice.
10 Israel’s arrogance testifies against him,(FO)
    but despite all this
he does not return(FP) to the Lord his God
    or search(FQ) for him.

11 “Ephraim is like a dove,(FR)
    easily deceived and senseless—
now calling to Egypt,(FS)
    now turning to Assyria.(FT)
12 When they go, I will throw my net(FU) over them;
    I will pull them down like the birds in the sky.
When I hear them flocking together,
    I will catch them.
13 Woe(FV) to them,
    because they have strayed(FW) from me!
Destruction to them,
    because they have rebelled against me!
I long to redeem them
    but they speak about me(FX) falsely.(FY)
14 They do not cry out to me from their hearts(FZ)
    but wail on their beds.
They slash themselves,[t] appealing to their gods
    for grain and new wine,(GA)
    but they turn away from me.(GB)
15 I trained(GC) them and strengthened their arms,
    but they plot evil(GD) against me.
16 They do not turn to the Most High;(GE)
    they are like a faulty bow.(GF)
Their leaders will fall by the sword
    because of their insolent(GG) words.
For this they will be ridiculed(GH)
    in the land of Egypt.(GI)

Israel to Reap the Whirlwind

“Put the trumpet(GJ) to your lips!
    An eagle(GK) is over the house of the Lord
because the people have broken my covenant(GL)
    and rebelled against my law.(GM)
Israel cries out to me,
    ‘Our God, we acknowledge you!’
But Israel has rejected what is good;
    an enemy will pursue him.(GN)
They set up kings without my consent;
    they choose princes without my approval.(GO)
With their silver and gold
    they make idols(GP) for themselves
    to their own destruction.
Samaria, throw out your calf-idol!(GQ)
    My anger burns against them.
How long will they be incapable of purity?(GR)
    They are from Israel!
This calf—a metalworker has made it;
    it is not God.(GS)
It will be broken in pieces,
    that calf(GT) of Samaria.(GU)

“They sow the wind
    and reap the whirlwind.(GV)
The stalk has no head;
    it will produce no flour.(GW)
Were it to yield grain,
    foreigners would swallow it up.(GX)
Israel is swallowed up;(GY)
    now she is among the nations
    like something no one wants.(GZ)
For they have gone up to Assyria(HA)
    like a wild donkey(HB) wandering alone.
    Ephraim has sold herself to lovers.(HC)
10 Although they have sold themselves among the nations,
    I will now gather them together.(HD)
They will begin to waste away(HE)
    under the oppression of the mighty king.

11 “Though Ephraim built many altars for sin offerings,
    these have become altars for sinning.(HF)
12 I wrote for them the many things of my law,
    but they regarded them as something foreign.(HG)
13 Though they offer sacrifices as gifts to me,
    and though they eat(HH) the meat,
    the Lord is not pleased with them.(HI)
Now he will remember(HJ) their wickedness
    and punish their sins:(HK)
    They will return to Egypt.(HL)
14 Israel has forgotten(HM) their Maker(HN)
    and built palaces;
    Judah has fortified many towns.
But I will send fire on their cities
    that will consume their fortresses.”(HO)
