13 (12) Ya‘akov fled to the land of Aram.
There Isra’el slaved to win a wife;
for a wife he tended sheep.
14 (13) By a prophet Adonai brought Isra’el up from Egypt,
and by a prophet he was protected.
15 (14) Efrayim has given bitter provocation,
so the penalty for his bloodshed will be thrown down on him,
and his Lord will repay him for his insult.
13 “When Efrayim spoke, there was trembling;
he was a power in Isra’el.
But when he incurred guilt through Ba‘al,
he died.
2 So now they keep adding sin to sin,
casting images from their silver;
idols they invent for themselves,
all of them the work of craftsmen.
‘Sacrifice to them,’ they say.
Men give kisses to calves!
3 Therefore they will be like a morning cloud,
like the dew that disappears early,
like chaff blown by wind from the threshing-floor,
or like smoke that goes out the window.
4 Still, I am Adonai your God,
from the land of Egypt;
and you don’t know any God but me
or, other than me, any Savior.
5 I knew you in the desert,
in a land of terrible drought.
6 When they were fed, they were satisfied;
when satisfied, they became proud.
Therefore they forgot me.
7 So now I have become like a lion to them;
like a leopard I will lurk by the road;
8 I will meet them like a bear
whose cubs have been taken away.
I will tear their hearts from their bodies.
I will devour them there like a lion,
like a wild animal ripping them up.
9 It is your destruction, Isra’el,
although your help is in me.
10 So now, where is your king,
to save you in all your cities?
Where are your judges, of whom you said,
‘Give me a king and leaders’?
11 I gave you a king in my anger;
and in my fury I took him away.
12 “Efrayim’s guilt has been wrapped up,
his sin is stored away.
13 The pain of being born will come to him;
but he is an unwise son.
The time has come; and he shouldn’t delay,
there at the mouth of the womb.
14 Should I ransom them from the power of Sh’ol?
Should I redeem them from death?
Where are your plagues, death;
where is your destruction, Sh’ol?
My eyes are closed to compassion.
15 For though he flourishes among the reeds,
an east wind will come, a wind from Adonai,
blowing up from the desert.
Then his water source will dry up,
then his spring will fail —
it will plunder his treasury,
removing every precious thing.”
14 (13:16) Shomron will bear her guilt,
for she has rebelled against her God.
They will fall by the sword,
their little ones will be dashed to pieces
and their pregnant women ripped open.
2 (1) Return, Isra’el, to Adonai your God,
for your guilt has made you stumble.
3 (2) Take words with you, and return to Adonai;
say to him, “Forgive all guilt,
and accept what is good;
we will pay instead of bulls
[the offerings of] our lips.
4 (3) Ashur will not save us,
we will not ride on horses,
and we will no longer call
what we made with our hands our gods.
For it is only in you
that the fatherless can find mercy.”
5 (4) “I will heal their disloyalty,
I will love them freely;
for my anger has turned from him.
6 (5) I will be like dew to Isra’el;
he will blossom like a lily
and strike roots like the L’vanon.
7 (6) His branches will spread out,
his beauty be like an olive tree
and his fragrance like the L’vanon.
8 (7) Again they will live in his shade and raise grain;
they will blossom like a vine,
and its aroma will be
like the wine of the L’vanon.
9 (8) Efrayim [will say], ‘What have I
to do any more with idols?’
And I, I answer and affirm him;
I am like a fresh, green cypress tree;
your fruitfulness comes from me.”

13 The Lord used a prophet to bring Israel up from Egypt,(A)
by a prophet he cared for him.(B)
14 But Ephraim has aroused his bitter anger;
his Lord will leave on him the guilt of his bloodshed(C)
and will repay him for his contempt.(D)
The Lord’s Anger Against Israel
13 When Ephraim spoke, people trembled;(E)
he was exalted(F) in Israel.
But he became guilty of Baal worship(G) and died.
2 Now they sin more and more;
they make(H) idols for themselves from their silver,(I)
cleverly fashioned images,
all of them the work of craftsmen.(J)
It is said of these people,
“They offer human sacrifices!
They kiss[a](K) calf-idols!(L)”
3 Therefore they will be like the morning mist,
like the early dew that disappears,(M)
like chaff(N) swirling from a threshing floor,(O)
like smoke(P) escaping through a window.
4 “But I have been the Lord your God
ever since you came out of Egypt.(Q)
You shall acknowledge(R) no God but me,(S)
no Savior(T) except me.
5 I cared for you in the wilderness,(U)
in the land of burning heat.
6 When I fed them, they were satisfied;
when they were satisfied, they became proud;(V)
then they forgot(W) me.(X)
7 So I will be like a lion(Y) to them,
like a leopard I will lurk by the path.
8 Like a bear robbed of her cubs,(Z)
I will attack them and rip them open;
like a lion(AA) I will devour them—
a wild animal will tear them apart.(AB)
9 “You are destroyed, Israel,
because you are against me,(AC) against your helper.(AD)
10 Where is your king,(AE) that he may save you?
Where are your rulers in all your towns,
of whom you said,
‘Give me a king and princes’?(AF)
11 So in my anger I gave you a king,(AG)
and in my wrath I took him away.(AH)
12 The guilt of Ephraim is stored up,
his sins are kept on record.(AI)
13 Pains as of a woman in childbirth(AJ) come to him,
but he is a child without wisdom;
when the time(AK) arrives,
he doesn’t have the sense to come out of the womb.(AL)
14 “I will deliver this people from the power of the grave;(AM)
I will redeem them from death.(AN)
Where, O death, are your plagues?
Where, O grave, is your destruction?(AO)
“I will have no compassion,
15 even though he thrives(AP) among his brothers.
An east wind(AQ) from the Lord will come,
blowing in from the desert;
his spring will fail
and his well dry up.(AR)
His storehouse will be plundered(AS)
of all its treasures.
16 The people of Samaria(AT) must bear their guilt,(AU)
because they have rebelled(AV) against their God.
They will fall by the sword;(AW)
their little ones will be dashed(AX) to the ground,
their pregnant women(AY) ripped open.”[b]
Repentance to Bring Blessing
14 [c]Return,(AZ) Israel, to the Lord your God.
Your sins(BA) have been your downfall!(BB)
2 Take words with you
and return to the Lord.
Say to him:
“Forgive(BC) all our sins
and receive us graciously,(BD)
that we may offer the fruit of our lips.[d](BE)
3 Assyria cannot save us;(BF)
we will not mount warhorses.(BG)
We will never again say ‘Our gods’(BH)
to what our own hands have made,(BI)
for in you the fatherless(BJ) find compassion.”
4 “I will heal(BK) their waywardness(BL)
and love them freely,(BM)
for my anger has turned away(BN) from them.
5 I will be like the dew(BO) to Israel;
he will blossom like a lily.(BP)
Like a cedar of Lebanon(BQ)
he will send down his roots;(BR)
6 his young shoots will grow.
His splendor will be like an olive tree,(BS)
his fragrance like a cedar of Lebanon.(BT)
7 People will dwell again in his shade;(BU)
they will flourish like the grain,
they will blossom(BV) like the vine—
Israel’s fame will be like the wine(BW) of Lebanon.(BX)
8 Ephraim, what more have I[e] to do with idols?(BY)
I will answer him and care for him.
I am like a flourishing juniper;(BZ)
your fruitfulness comes from me.”

13 And by a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.
14 Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his Lord return unto him.
13 When Ephraim spake trembling, he exalted himself in Israel; but when he offended in Baal, he died.
2 And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.
3 Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud and as the early dew that passeth away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.
4 Yet I am the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no saviour beside me.
5 I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of great drought.
6 According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten me.
7 Therefore I will be unto them as a lion: as a leopard by the way will I observe them:
8 I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them.
9 O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help.
10 I will be thy king: where is any other that may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes?
11 I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath.
12 The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is hid.
13 The sorrows of a travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for he should not stay long in the place of the breaking forth of children.
14 I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.
15 Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the Lord shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels.
16 Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.
14 O israel, return unto the Lord thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity.
2 Take with you words, and turn to the Lord: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips.
3 Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.
4 I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.
5 I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon.
6 His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon.
7 They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.
8 Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found.
9 Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the Lord are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.
