⁴ “What can I do with you, Ephraim?^(A)
    What can I do with you, Judah?
Your love is like the morning mist,
    like the early dew that disappears.^(B)

⁴ Not so the wicked!
    They are like chaff^(A)
    that the wind blows away.

¹³ Although the peoples roar^(A) like the roar of surging waters,
    when he rebukes^(B) them they flee^(C) far away,
driven before the wind like chaff^(D) on the hills,
    like tumbleweed before a gale.^(E)

¹⁵ “See, I will make you into a threshing sledge,^(A)
    new and sharp, with many teeth.
You will thresh the mountains^(B) and crush them,
    and reduce the hills to chaff.^(C)
16 You will winnow^(D) them, the wind will pick them up,
    and a gale^(E) will blow them away.^(F)
But you will rejoice^(G) in the Lord
    and glory^(H) in the Holy One^(I) of Israel.

¹² who said, “Let us take possession^(A)
    of the pasturelands of God.”

¹³ Make them like tumbleweed, my God,
    like chaff^(B) before the wind.
¹⁴ As fire consumes the forest
    or a flame sets the mountains ablaze,^(C)
15 so pursue them with your tempest^(D)
    and terrify them with your storm.^(E)
16 Cover their faces with shame,^(F) Lord,
    so that they will seek your name.

¹⁷ May they ever be ashamed and dismayed;^(G)
    may they perish in disgrace.^(H)
