Law Cannot Save from Sin

13 Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful.

13 Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good(A) to bring about my death,(B) so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.

Amaziah’s Complaint

10 Then Amaziah the (C)priest of (D)Bethel sent to (E)Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to [c]bear all his words. 11 For thus Amos has said:

‘Jeroboam shall die by the sword,
And Israel shall surely be led away (F)captive
From their own land.’ ”

12 Then Amaziah said to Amos:

“Go, you seer!
Flee to the land of Judah.
There eat bread,
And there prophesy.
13 But (G)never again prophesy at Bethel,
(H)For it is the king’s [d]sanctuary,
And it is the royal [e]residence.”

14 Then Amos answered, and said to Amaziah:

“I was no prophet,
Nor was I (I)a son of a prophet,
But I was a (J)sheepbreeder
And a tender of sycamore fruit.
15 Then the Lord took me [f]as I followed the flock,
And the Lord said to me,
‘Go, (K)prophesy to My people Israel.’
16 Now therefore, hear the word of the Lord:
You say, ‘Do not prophesy against Israel,
And (L)do not [g]spout against the house of Isaac.’

17 “Therefore(M) thus says the Lord:

(N)‘Your wife shall be a harlot in the city;
Your sons and daughters shall fall by the sword;
Your land shall be divided by survey line;
You shall die in a (O)defiled land;
And Israel shall surely be led away captive
From his own land.’ ”

Amos and Amaziah

10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel(D) sent a message to Jeroboam(E) king of Israel: “Amos is raising a conspiracy(F) against you in the very heart of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words.(G) 11 For this is what Amos is saying:

“‘Jeroboam will die by the sword,
    and Israel will surely go into exile,(H)
    away from their native land.’”(I)

12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Get out, you seer!(J) Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there.(K) 13 Don’t prophesy anymore at Bethel,(L) because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple(M) of the kingdom.(N)

14 Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet(O) nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees.(P) 15 But the Lord took me from tending the flock(Q) and said to me, ‘Go,(R) prophesy(S) to my people Israel.’(T) 16 Now then, hear(U) the word of the Lord. You say,

“‘Do not prophesy against(V) Israel,
    and stop preaching against the descendants of Isaac.’

17 “Therefore this is what the Lord says:

“‘Your wife will become a prostitute(W) in the city,
    and your sons and daughters will fall by the sword.
Your land will be measured and divided up,
    and you yourself will die in a pagan[a] country.
And Israel will surely go into exile,(X)
    away from their native land.(Y)’”
