Het Boek
2 Ik ben een narcis uit Saron, een lelie in het dal.
2 Als ik naar mijn allerliefste kijk te midden van andere meisjes, zie ik een blanke lelie tussen distelstruiken.
3 Als ik mijn liefste zie zitten tussen de andere jonge mannen, zie ik een appelboom tussen gewone loofbomen. Ik verlang ernaar in zijn schaduw te zitten en zijn vruchten te proeven.
4 Hij heeft mij naar het wijnhuis gebracht en ik koesterde mij in zijn liefde.
5 Geef mij rozijnenkoekjes om aan te sterken en appels om nieuwe energie te krijgen, want door de liefde ontbreekt mij elke kracht.
6 Met mijn hoofd lig ik op zijn linkerarm. Zijn rechterarm is om mij heen.
7 Meisjes van Jeruzalem, let op wat ik jullie met nadruk zeg. Kijk daarbij naar de gazellen en hinden op het veld. Zij kunnen jullie een les leren. Loop niet vooruit op de liefde, overhaast niets. Laat de liefde zichzelf openbaren als de tijd daarvoor gekomen is.
8 Luister! Daar komt mijn liefste. Hij springt door de bergen en komt huppelend over de heuvels aan.
9 Mijn liefste loopt als een gazel of een hertenjong. Kijk, nu staat hij achter de muur van ons huis en kijkt door de ramen.
10 Hij spreekt tegen mij: sta nu op, mijn allerliefste. Jij bent voor mij de mooiste. Kom, ga met me mee.
11 Kijk maar, de winter is voorbij en ook de regentijd is over.
12 De bloemen ontluiken op de velden. Nu is de tijd om te zingen aangebroken. Overal hoor je het koeren van de tortelduiven.
13 De eerste vijgen rijpen aan de bomen en de bloeiende druivenstruiken geuren. Sta op, mijn allerliefste. Je bent zo mooi, kom met me mee.
14 Jij bent mijn duifje, verborgen in de rotsspleten. Laat me je gezicht zien en je stem horen. Je stem klinkt zo zoet en je gezicht is zo lief.
15 Vang de jonge vossen die onze wijngaarden ruïneren. De druiven bloeien nu immers?
16 Mijn liefste en ik zijn van elkaar. Hij weidt zijn kudde in de bloeiende velden.
17 Hij gaat wanneer de avondwind opsteekt en de schaduwen langer worden. Kom dan naar mij toe en doe als de gazel, mijn liefste. Of als een jong hert dat rondspringt in de bergen.

and his (G)banner over me was love.
5 Sustain me with (H)raisins;
refresh me with apples,
(I)for I am sick with love.
6 His (J)left hand is under my head,
and his right hand (K)embraces me!
7 I (L)adjure you,[c] O (M)daughters of Jerusalem,
by (N)the gazelles or the does of the field,
that you not stir up or awaken love
until it pleases.

8 The voice of my beloved!
Behold, he comes,
leaping (O)over the mountains,
bounding over the hills.
9 My beloved is like (P)a gazelle
or a young stag.
Behold, there he stands
behind our wall,
gazing through the windows,
looking through the lattice.
10 My beloved speaks and says to me:
(Q)“Arise, my love, my beautiful one,
and come away,
11 for behold, the winter is past;
(R)the rain is over and gone.
12 (S)The flowers appear on the earth,
the time of singing[d] has come,
and the voice of (T)the turtledove
is heard in our land.
13 (U)The fig tree ripens its figs,
and (V)the vines are in blossom;
they give forth fragrance.
(W)Arise, my love, my beautiful one,
and come away.
14 O my (X)dove, in the (Y)clefts of the rock,
in the crannies of the cliff,
let me see your face,
let me (Z)hear your voice,
for your voice is sweet,
and your face is (AA)lovely.
15 Catch (AB)the foxes[e] for us,
the little foxes
that spoil the vineyards,
(AC)for our vineyards are in blossom.”
16 (AD)My beloved is mine, and I am his;
he (AE)grazes[f] among the lilies.
17 Until (AF)the day breathes
and (AG)the shadows flee,
turn, my beloved, be like (AH)a gazelle
or a young stag on cleft mountains.[g]
