Hiobs Demütigung und Reue
42 Da antwortete Hiob dem Herrn und sprach:
2 Ich erkenne, dass du alles vermagst und dass kein Vorhaben dir verwehrt werden kann.
3 »Wer verfinstert da den Ratschluss mit Worten ohne Erkenntnis?« Fürwahr, ich habe geredet, was ich nicht verstehe, Dinge, die mir zu wunderbar sind und die ich nicht begreifen kann!
4 »Höre nun, ich will reden; ich will dich fragen, und du belehre mich!«
5 Vom Hörensagen hatte ich von dir gehört, aber nun hat mein Auge dich gesehen.
6 Darum spreche ich mich schuldig[a] und tue Buße in Staub und in Asche!
Hiob bittet für seine Freunde
7 Und es geschah, als der Herr diese Worte an Hiob vollendet hatte, da sprach der Herr zu Eliphas, dem Temaniter: Mein Zorn ist entbrannt über dich und deine beiden Freunde, denn ihr habt nicht recht von mir geredet, wie mein Knecht Hiob.
8 So nehmt nun sieben Jungstiere und sieben Widder und geht zu meinem Knecht Hiob und bringt sie als Brandopfer dar für euch selbst! Mein Knecht Hiob aber soll für euch bitten; denn nur ihn werde ich erhören[b], dass ich gegen euch nicht nach eurer Torheit handle; denn ihr habt nicht recht von mir geredet, wie mein Knecht Hiob!
9 Da gingen Eliphas, der Temaniter, und Bildad, der Schuchiter, und Zophar, der Naamatiter, und machten es so, wie der Herr es ihnen befohlen hatte. Und der Herr erhörte Hiob.
Das gesegnete Ende Hiobs
10 Und der Herr wendete Hiobs Geschick, als er für seine Freunde bat; und der Herr erstattete Hiob alles doppelt wieder, was er gehabt hatte.
11 Und alle seine Brüder und alle seine Schwestern und alle seine früheren Bekannten kamen zu Hiob und aßen mit ihm in seinem Haus; und sie bezeugten ihm Teilnahme und trösteten ihn wegen all des Unglücks, das der Herr über ihn gebracht hatte, und schenkten ihm ein jeder eine Kesita[c] und einen goldenen Ring.
12 Und der Herr segnete das spätere Leben Hiobs mehr als sein früheres; er bekam 14 000 Schafe, 6 000 Kamele, 1 000 Joch Rinder und 1 000 Eselinnen.
13 Er bekam auch sieben Söhne und drei Töchter.
14 Und er gab der ersten den Namen Jemima, der zweiten den Namen Kezia und der dritten den Namen Keren-Happuch.
15 Und es wurden im ganzen Land keine so schönen Frauen gefunden wie Hiobs Töchter; und ihr Vater gab ihnen ein Erbteil unter ihren Brüdern.
16 Hiob aber lebte danach noch 140 Jahre und sah seine Kinder und Kindeskinder bis in das vierte Geschlecht.
17 Und Hiob starb alt und lebenssatt.

Hiobs letztes Wort
42 Da antwortete Hiob:
2 »Herr, ich erkenne, dass du alles zu tun vermagst;
nichts und niemand kann deinen Plan vereiteln.
3 Du hast gefragt:
›Wer bist du, dass du meine Weisheit anzweifelst
mit Worten ohne Verstand?‹
Ja, es ist wahr:
Ich habe von Dingen geredet, die ich nicht begreife,
sie sind zu hoch für mich und übersteigen meinen Verstand.
4 Du hast gesagt:
›Hör mir zu, jetzt rede ich, ich will dich fragen,
und du sollst mir antworten!‹
5 Herr, ich kannte dich nur vom Hörensagen,
jetzt aber habe ich dich mit eigenen Augen gesehen!
6 Darum widerrufe ich meine Worte,
ich bereue in Staub und Asche!«
Gott stellt sich hinter Hiob
7 Nachdem der Herr dies alles zu Hiob gesagt hatte, wandte er sich an Elifas aus Teman: »Ich bin voller Zorn über dich und deine beiden Freunde, ihr habt nicht die Wahrheit über mich gesagt, so wie mein Diener Hiob es tat! 8 Bringt nun sieben junge Stiere und sieben Schafböcke, geht damit zu meinem Diener Hiob und bringt sie als Brandopfer dar! Hiob soll für euch beten, denn nur ihn will ich erhören und euch um seinetwillen nichts Böses tun. Denn ihr habt nicht wie er die Wahrheit über mich gesagt.«
9 Da taten Elifas aus Teman, Bildad aus Schuach und Zofar aus Naama, was ihnen der Herr befohlen hatte. Und Gott erhörte Hiobs Gebet.
10 Als Hiob für seine Freunde betete, da wendete der Herr für ihn alles zum Guten. Er gab ihm doppelt so viel, wie er früher besessen hatte. 11 Alle seine Brüder und Schwestern und die früheren Bekannten besuchten ihn wieder. Sie aßen mit ihm in seinem Haus und trösteten ihn wegen des Unglücks, das der Herr über ihn gebracht hatte. Jeder schenkte ihm ein Silberstück und einen Ring aus Gold.
12 Der Herr segnete Hiob von jetzt an mehr als zuvor. Bald besaß er 14.000 Schafe und Ziegen, 6000 Kamele, 1000 Rindergespanne und 1000 Esel. 13 Er bekam auch wieder sieben Söhne und drei Töchter. 14 Die erste nannte er Jemima (»Täubchen«), die zweite Kezia (»Zimtblüte«) und die dritte Keren-Happuch (»Schminkdöschen«). 15 Im ganzen Land gab es keine schöneren Frauen als Hiobs Töchter; sie durften mit ihren Brüdern das Erbe teilen.
16 Hiob lebte noch 140 Jahre, er sah Kinder und Enkel bis in die vierte Generation. 17 Schließlich starb er in hohem Alter nach einem reichen und erfüllten Leben.

42 Then Job answered the Lord and said:
2 “I know that You (A)can do everything,
And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.
3 You asked, (B)‘Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand,
(C)Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.
4 Listen, please, and let me speak;
You said, (D)‘I will question you, and you shall answer Me.’
5 “I have (E)heard of You by the hearing of the ear,
But now my eye sees You.
6 Therefore I (F)abhor[a] myself,
And repent in dust and ashes.”
7 And so it was, after the Lord had spoken these words to Job, that the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is aroused against you and your two friends, for you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has. 8 Now therefore, take for yourselves (G)seven bulls and seven rams, (H)go to My servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and My servant Job shall (I)pray for you. For I will accept [b]him, lest I deal with you according to your folly; because you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has.”
9 So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the Lord commanded them; for the Lord had [c]accepted Job. 10 (J)And the Lord [d]restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends. Indeed the Lord gave Job (K)twice as much as he had before. 11 Then (L)all his brothers, all his sisters, and all those who had been his acquaintances before, came to him and ate food with him in his house; and they consoled him and comforted him for all the adversity that the Lord had brought upon him. Each one gave him a piece of silver and each a ring of gold.
12 Now the Lord blessed (M)the latter days of Job more than his beginning; for he had (N)fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke of oxen, and one thousand female donkeys. 13 (O)He also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 And he called the name of the first [e]Jemimah, the name of the second [f]Keziah, and the name of the third [g]Keren-Happuch. 15 In all the land were found no women so beautiful as the daughters of Job; and their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers.
16 After this Job (P)lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his children and grandchildren for four generations. 17 So Job died, old and (Q)full of days.

3 Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.
4 Hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.
5 I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.
6 Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.
7 And it was so, that after the Lord had spoken these words unto Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.
8 Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job.
9 So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the Lord commanded them: the Lord also accepted Job.
10 And the Lord turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.
11 Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold.
12 So the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses.
13 He had also seven sons and three daughters.
14 And he called the name of the first, Jemima; and the name of the second, Kezia; and the name of the third, Kerenhappuch.
15 And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren.

Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,

4 “You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.’(E)
5 My ears had heard of you(F)
but now my eyes have seen you.(G)
6 Therefore I despise myself(H)
and repent(I) in dust and ashes.”(J)
Epilogue
7 After the Lord had said these things to Job(K), he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “I am angry with you and your two friends,(L) because you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.(M) 8 So now take seven bulls and seven rams(N) and go to my servant Job(O) and sacrifice a burnt offering(P) for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer(Q) and not deal with you according to your folly.(R) You have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.”(S) 9 So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite(T) did what the Lord told them; and the Lord accepted Job’s prayer.(U)
10 After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes(V) and gave him twice as much as he had before.(W) 11 All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before(X) came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the Lord had brought on him,(Y) and each one gave him a piece of silver[a] and a gold ring.
12 The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. 13 And he also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. 15 Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers.
16 After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. 17 And so Job died, an old man and full of years.(Z)
