Hesekiels uppgift som väktare
33 Herrens ord kom till mig: 2 ”Du människa, tala till dina landsmän och säg till dem: ’Om jag låter ett svärd drabba ett land och folket där utser en man bland sig till sin väktare 3 och denne ser svärdet komma mot landet och slår larm med hornstöt och varnar folket, 4 och om någon som hör larmet inte bryr sig om det utan dödas av svärdet, så är han själv ansvarig för sin död. 5 Han hörde ju hornstöten men tog inte varning. Därför är han själv ansvarig för sin död. Om han hade lyssnat till varningen skulle han ha räddat sitt liv. 6 Men om väktaren ser svärdet komma och inte slår larm med hornstöt och varnar folket, och om någon då dödas av svärdet, ska denne dö i sin synd, och jag ska hålla väktaren ansvarig för hans död.’
7 Du människa, jag har utsett dig till en väktare för Israels folk. När du hör ett ord från mig ska du varna dem å mina vägnar. 8 När jag säger till den gudlöse: ’Du gudlöse, du måste dö!’ och du då inte varnar honom för hans leverne, kommer den gudlöse att dö i sin synd, men jag kommer att hålla dig ansvarig för hans död. 9 Men om du varnar den gudlöse så att han kan vända om från sitt leverne men om han ändå inte gör det, kommer han att dö i sin synd, men du har räddat ditt liv.
10 Du människa, säg till Israels folk: ’Ni säger: ”Våra överträdelser och synder tynger oss, och vi tynar bort med dem. Hur ska vi kunna leva?” ’ 11 Säg till dem: ’Så sant jag lever, säger Herren, Herren, jag önskar inte den ogudaktiges död. Jag vill att den gudlöse vänder om från sitt onda leverne, så att han får leva. Vänd om, vänd om från ert onda leverne! Varför skulle ni dö, israeliter?’
12 Säg därför, du människa, till dina landsmän: ’Den rättfärdiges rättfärdighet kan inte rädda honom när han begår en överträdelse, och den gudlöses gudlöshet kommer inte att leda honom till fall, när han vänder om från sin gudlöshet. Den rättfärdige ska inte heller få leva genom sin rättfärdighet när han syndar.’ 13 Om jag säger till den rättfärdige att han ska få leva, men han förtröstar på sin egen rättfärdighet och gör det onda, ska inget av hans rättfärdighet bli ihågkommet. Han ska dö för det onda han gjort. 14 Likaså: Om jag säger till den gudlöse att han måste dö, men han då vänder om från sin synd och gör det som är rätt och rättfärdigt, 15 lämnar igen panten han tagit för lån eller lämnar tillbaka det han har stulit, följer livets bud och inte gör något ont – då ska han få leva. Han ska inte dö, 16 och ingen av hans gamla synder ska dras upp inför honom. Han har gjort det som är rätt och rättfärdigt. Han ska få leva.
17 Ändå säger dina landsmän att Herren inte handlar rätt, medan det är de själva som inte gör det. 18 Om den rättfärdige vänder sig bort från sin rättfärdighet och gör det som är ont, måste han dö. 19 Om den gudlöse omvänder sig från sin ondska och gör det som är rätt och rättfärdigt, ska han få leva. 20 Ändå säger ni att Herren inte handlar rätt. Men jag ska döma var och en av er, israeliter, efter hans gärningar.”
Jerusalems fall och profetia mot de kvarvarande
21 Under det tolfte året av vår landsförvisning, på femte dagen i tionde månaden[a], kom en flykting från Jerusalem till mig och berättade: ”Staden har fallit.” 22 Herrens hand hade kommit över mig på kvällen innan flyktingen kom, och han hade öppnat min mun på morgonen innan flyktingen kom, så att jag inte längre var stum utan kunde tala igen.
23 Herrens ord kom till mig: 24 ”Du människa, de som bor bland ruinerna i Israels land säger: ’Abraham var ensam, och ändå fick han äga landet. Vi är många, så visst ska landet vara givet som egendom åt oss.’ 25 Säg därför till dem: ’Så säger Herren, Herren: Ni äter kött med blodet i. Ni sätter ert hopp till avgudar och utgjuter blod. Skulle ni då få äga landet? 26 Ni förlitar er på era svärd. Ni gör avskyvärda ting. Ni kränker varandras hustrur. Skulle ni då få äga landet?’
27 Säg så här till dem: ’Så säger Herren, Herren: Så sant jag lever ska de som är bland ruinerna falla för svärd. De som är ute på fälten ska ätas upp av vilda djur, och de som finns i fästningar och grottor ska dö av pest. 28 Jag ska göra landet öde och obebott. Dess stolta styrka ska upphöra. Israels berg ska bli så öde att ingen vill vandra genom dem. 29 Då ska de inse att jag är Herren, när jag gör landet öde och obebott på grund av de avskyvärda handlingar som de begått.’
30 Du människa, dina landsmän pratar om dig vid husväggarna och dörrarna och säger till varandra: ’Kom, låt oss höra vad Herren har att säga!’ 31 Mitt folk kommer till dig så som folk brukar komma, och de sätter sig framför dig för att lyssna till dig, men de handlar inte enligt det de hör av dig. De talar som om de vore hängivna, men i verkligheten är de ute efter egen vinning. 32 Du har blivit för dem som en som bara sjunger kärlekssånger med vacker röst och spelar skickligt, för de hör vad du säger men handlar inte därefter.
33 Men när det kommer – och det kommer – då ska de inse att det är en profet som har varit hos dem.”

Ezekiel Israel’s Sentinel
33 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 O Mortal, speak to your people and say to them, If I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take one of their number as their sentinel; 3 and if the sentinel sees the sword coming upon the land and blows the trumpet and warns the people; 4 then if any who hear the sound of the trumpet do not take warning, and the sword comes and takes them away, their blood shall be upon their own heads. 5 They heard the sound of the trumpet and did not take warning; their blood shall be upon themselves. But if they had taken warning, they would have saved their lives. 6 But if the sentinel sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any of them, they are taken away in their iniquity, but their blood I will require at the sentinel’s hand.
7 So you, mortal, I have made a sentinel for the house of Israel; whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. 8 If I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked ones, you shall surely die’, and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from their ways, the wicked shall die in their iniquity, but their blood I will require at your hand. 9 But if you warn the wicked to turn from their ways, and they do not turn from their ways, the wicked shall die in their iniquity, but you will have saved your life.
God’s Justice and Mercy
10 Now you, mortal, say to the house of Israel, Thus you have said: ‘Our transgressions and our sins weigh upon us, and we waste away because of them; how then can we live?’ 11 Say to them, As I live, says the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from their ways and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways; for why will you die, O house of Israel? 12 And you, mortal, say to your people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not save them when they transgress; and as for the wickedness of the wicked, it shall not make them stumble when they turn from their wickedness; and the righteous shall not be able to live by their righteousness[a] when they sin. 13 Though I say to the righteous that they shall surely live, yet if they trust in their righteousness and commit iniquity, none of their righteous deeds shall be remembered; but in the iniquity that they have committed they shall die. 14 Again, though I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die’, yet if they turn from their sin and do what is lawful and right— 15 if the wicked restore the pledge, give back what they have taken by robbery, and walk in the statutes of life, committing no iniquity—they shall surely live, they shall not die. 16 None of the sins that they have committed shall be remembered against them; they have done what is lawful and right, they shall surely live.
17 Yet your people say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just’, when it is their own way that is not just. 18 When the righteous turn from their righteousness, and commit iniquity, they shall die for it.[b] 19 And when the wicked turn from their wickedness, and do what is lawful and right, they shall live by it.[c] 20 Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, I will judge all of you according to your ways!
The Fall of Jerusalem
21 In the twelfth year of our exile, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, someone who had escaped from Jerusalem came to me and said, ‘The city has fallen.’ 22 Now the hand of the Lord had been upon me the evening before the fugitive came; but he had opened my mouth by the time the fugitive came to me in the morning; so my mouth was opened, and I was no longer unable to speak.
The Survivors in Judah
23 The word of the Lord came to me: 24 Mortal, the inhabitants of these waste places in the land of Israel keep saying, ‘Abraham was only one man, yet he got possession of the land; but we are many; the land is surely given to us to possess.’ 25 Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord God: You eat flesh with the blood, and lift up your eyes to your idols, and shed blood; shall you then possess the land? 26 You depend on your swords, you commit abominations, and each of you defiles his neighbour’s wife; shall you then possess the land? 27 Say this to them, Thus says the Lord God: As I live, surely those who are in the waste places shall fall by the sword; and those who are in the open field I will give to the wild animals to be devoured; and those who are in strongholds and in caves shall die by pestilence. 28 I will make the land a desolation and a waste, and its proud might shall come to an end; and the mountains of Israel shall be so desolate that no one will pass through. 29 Then they shall know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land a desolation and a waste because of all their abominations that they have committed.
30 As for you, mortal, your people who talk together about you by the walls, and at the doors of the houses, say to one another, each to a neighbour, ‘Come and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.’ 31 They come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear your words, but they will not obey them. For flattery is on their lips, but their heart is set on their gain. 32 To them you are like a singer of love songs,[d] one who has a beautiful voice and plays well on an instrument; they hear what you say, but they will not do it. 33 When this comes—and come it will!—then they shall know that a prophet has been among them.

Ezekiel as Israel’s Watchman
33 Once again a message came to me from the Lord: 2 “Son of man, give your people this message: ‘When I bring an army against a country, the people of that land choose one of their own to be a watchman. 3 When the watchman sees the enemy coming, he sounds the alarm to warn the people. 4 Then if those who hear the alarm refuse to take action, it is their own fault if they die. 5 They heard the alarm but ignored it, so the responsibility is theirs. If they had listened to the warning, they could have saved their lives. 6 But if the watchman sees the enemy coming and doesn’t sound the alarm to warn the people, he is responsible for their captivity. They will die in their sins, but I will hold the watchman responsible for their deaths.’
7 “Now, son of man, I am making you a watchman for the people of Israel. Therefore, listen to what I say and warn them for me. 8 If I announce that some wicked people are sure to die and you fail to tell them to change their ways, then they will die in their sins, and I will hold you responsible for their deaths. 9 But if you warn them to repent and they don’t repent, they will die in their sins, but you will have saved yourself.
The Watchman’s Message
10 “Son of man, give the people of Israel this message: You are saying, ‘Our sins are heavy upon us; we are wasting away! How can we survive?’ 11 As surely as I live, says the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of wicked people. I only want them to turn from their wicked ways so they can live. Turn! Turn from your wickedness, O people of Israel! Why should you die?
12 “Son of man, give your people this message: The righteous behavior of righteous people will not save them if they turn to sin, nor will the wicked behavior of wicked people destroy them if they repent and turn from their sins. 13 When I tell righteous people that they will live, but then they sin, expecting their past righteousness to save them, then none of their righteous acts will be remembered. I will destroy them for their sins. 14 And suppose I tell some wicked people that they will surely die, but then they turn from their sins and do what is just and right. 15 For instance, they might give back a debtor’s security, return what they have stolen, and obey my life-giving laws, no longer doing what is evil. If they do this, then they will surely live and not die. 16 None of their past sins will be brought up again, for they have done what is just and right, and they will surely live.
17 “Your people are saying, ‘The Lord isn’t doing what’s right,’ but it is they who are not doing what’s right. 18 For again I say, when righteous people turn away from their righteous behavior and turn to evil, they will die. 19 But if wicked people turn from their wickedness and do what is just and right, they will live. 20 O people of Israel, you are saying, ‘The Lord isn’t doing what’s right.’ But I judge each of you according to your deeds.”
Explanation of Jerusalem’s Fall
21 On January 8,[a] during the twelfth year of our captivity, a survivor from Jerusalem came to me and said, “The city has fallen!” 22 The previous evening the Lord had taken hold of me and given me back my voice. So I was able to speak when this man arrived the next morning.
23 Then this message came to me from the Lord: 24 “Son of man, the scattered remnants of Israel living among the ruined cities keep saying, ‘Abraham was only one man, yet he gained possession of the entire land. We are many; surely the land has been given to us as a possession.’ 25 So tell these people, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: You eat meat with blood in it, you worship idols,[b] and you murder the innocent. Do you really think the land should be yours? 26 Murderers! Idolaters! Adulterers! Should the land belong to you?’
27 “Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: As surely as I live, those living in the ruins will die by the sword. And I will send wild animals to eat those living in the open fields. Those hiding in the forts and caves will die of disease. 28 I will completely destroy the land and demolish her pride. Her arrogant power will come to an end. The mountains of Israel will be so desolate that no one will even travel through them. 29 When I have completely destroyed the land because of their detestable sins, then they will know that I am the Lord.’
30 “Son of man, your people talk about you in their houses and whisper about you at the doors. They say to each other, ‘Come on, let’s go hear the prophet tell us what the Lord is saying!’ 31 So my people come pretending to be sincere and sit before you. They listen to your words, but they have no intention of doing what you say. Their mouths are full of lustful words, and their hearts seek only after money. 32 You are very entertaining to them, like someone who sings love songs with a beautiful voice or plays fine music on an instrument. They hear what you say, but they don’t act on it! 33 But when all these terrible things happen to them—as they certainly will—then they will know a prophet has been among them.”
