8 Y SAULO consentía en su muerte. Y en aquel día se hizo una grande persecución en la iglesia que estaba en Jerusalem; y todos fueron esparcidos por las tierras de Judea y de Samaria, salvo los apóstoles.
2 Y llevaron á enterrar á Esteban varones piadosos, é hicieron gran llanto sobre él.
3 Entonces Saulo asolaba la iglesia, entrando por las casas: y trayendo hombres y mujeres, los entregaba en la cárcel.
4 Mas los que fueron esparcidos, iban por todas partes anunciando la palabra.
5 Entonces Felipe, descendiendo á la ciudad de Samaria, les predicaba á Cristo.
6 Y las gentes escuchaban atentamente unánimes las cosas que decía Felipe, oyendo y viendo las señales que hacía.
7 Porque de muchos que tenían espíritus inmundos, salían éstos dando grandes voces; y muchos paralíticos y cojos eran sanados:
8 Así que había gran gozo en aquella ciudad.
9 Y había un hombre llamado Simón, el cual había sido antes mágico en aquella ciudad, y había engañado la gente de Samaria, diciéndose ser algún grande:
10 Al cual oían todos atentamente desde al más pequeño hasta el más grande, diciendo: Este es la gran virtud de Dios.
11 Y le estaban atentos, porque con sus artes mágicas los había embelesado mucho tiempo.
12 Mas cuando creyeron á Felipe, que anunciaba el evangelio del reino de Dios y el nombre de Jesucristo, se bautizaban hombres y mujeres.
13 El mismo Simón creyó también entonces, y bautizándose, se llegó á Felipe: y viendo los milagros y grandes maravillas que se hacían, estaba atónito.
14 Y los apóstoles que estaban en Jerusalem, habiendo oído que Samaria había recibido la palabra de Dios, les enviaron á Pedro y á Juan:
15 Los cuales venidos, oraron por ellos, para que recibiesen el Espíritu Santo;
16 (Porque aun no había descendido sobre ninguno de ellos, mas solamente eran bautizados en el nombre de Jesús.)
17 Entonces les impusieron las manos, y recibieron el Espíritu Santo.
18 Y como vió Simón que por la imposición de las manos de los apóstoles se daba el Espíritu Santo, les ofreció dinero,
19 Diciendo: Dadme también á mí esta potestad, que á cualquiera que pusiere las manos encima, reciba el Espíritu Santo.
20 Entonces Pedro le dijo: Tu dinero perezca contigo, que piensas que el don de Dios se gane por dinero.
21 No tienes tú parte ni suerte en este negocio; porque tu corazón no es recto delante de Dios.
22 Arrepiéntete pues de esta tu maldad, y ruega á Dios, si quizás te será perdonado el pensamiento de tu corazón.
23 Porque en hiel de amargura y en prisión de maldad veo que estás.
24 Respondiendo entonces Simón, dijo: Rogad vosotros por mí al Señor, que ninguna cosa de estas que habéis dicho, venga sobre mí.
25 Y ellos, habiendo testificado y hablado la palabra de Dios, se volvieron á Jerusalem, y en muchas tierras de los Samaritanos anunciaron el evangelio.
26 Empero el ángel de Señor habló á Felipe, diciendo: Levántate y ve hacia el mediodía, al camino que desciende de Jerusalem á Gaza, el cual es desierto.
27 Entonces él se levantó, y fué: y he aquí un Etiope, eunuco, gobernador de Candace, reina de los Etiopes, el cual era puesto sobre todos sus tesoros, y había venido á adorar á Jerusalem,
28 Se volvía sentado en su carro, y leyendo el profeta Isaías.
29 Y el Espíritu dijo á Felipe: Llégate, y júntate á este carro.
30 Y acudiendo Felipe, le oyó que leía el profeta Isaías, y dijo: Mas ¿entiendes lo que lees?
31 Y dijo: ¿Y cómo podré, si alguno no me enseñare? Y rogó á Felipe que subiese, y se sentase con él.
32 Y el lugar de la Escritura que leía, era éste:
Como oveja á la muerte fué llevado;
Y como cordero mudo delante del que le trasquila,
Así no abrió su boca:
33 En su humillación su juicio fué quitado:
Mas su generación, ¿quién la contará?
Porque es quitada de la tierra su vida.
34 Y respondiendo el eunuco á Felipe, dijo: Ruégote ¿de quién el profeta dice esto? ¿de sí, ó de otro alguno?
35 Entonces Felipe, abriendo su boca, y comenzando desde esta escritura, le anunció el evangelio de Jesús.
36 Y yendo por el camino, llegaron á cierta agua; y dijo el eunuco: He aquí agua; ¿qué impide que yo sea bautizado?
37 Y Felipe dijo: Si crees de todo corazón, bien puedes. Y respondiendo, dijo: Creo que Jesucristo es el Hijo de Dios.
38 Y mandó parar el carro: y descendieron ambos al agua, Felipe y el eunuco; y bautizóle.
39 Y como subieron del agua, el Espíritu del Señor arrebató á Felipe; y no le vió más el eunuco, y se fué por su camino gozoso.
40 Felipe empero se halló en Azoto: y pasando, anunciaba el evangelio en todas las ciudades, hasta que llegó á Cesarea.

La iglesia perseguida y dispersa
Aquel día se desató una gran persecución contra la iglesia en Jerusalén y todos, excepto los apóstoles, se dispersaron por las regiones de Judea y Samaria. 2 Unos hombres piadosos sepultaron a Esteban e hicieron gran duelo por él. 3 Saulo, por su parte, causaba estragos en la iglesia: entraba de casa en casa, arrastraba a hombres y mujeres y los encarcelaba.
Felipe en Samaria
4 Los que se habían dispersado predicaban la palabra por dondequiera que iban. 5 Felipe bajó a una ciudad de Samaria y les anunciaba al Cristo. 6 Al oír a Felipe y ver las señales que realizaba, mucha gente se reunía y todos prestaban atención a su mensaje. 7 De muchos endemoniados los espíritus malignos salían dando gritos, y un gran número de paralíticos y cojos quedaban sanos. 8 Y aquella ciudad se llenó de alegría.
Simón el hechicero
9 Ya desde antes había en esa ciudad un hombre llamado Simón que, jactándose de ser un gran personaje, practicaba la hechicería y asombraba a la gente de Samaria. 10 Todos, desde el más pequeño hasta el más grande, le prestaban atención y exclamaban: «¡Este hombre es al que llaman el Gran Poder de Dios!».
11 Lo seguían porque por mucho tiempo los había tenido deslumbrados con sus artes mágicas. 12 Pero cuando creyeron a Felipe, quien anunciaba las buenas noticias del reino de Dios y el nombre de Jesucristo, tanto hombres como mujeres se bautizaron. 13 Simón mismo creyó y, después de bautizarse, seguía a Felipe por todas partes, asombrado de los grandes milagros y señales que veía.
14 Cuando los apóstoles que estaban en Jerusalén se enteraron de que los samaritanos habían aceptado la palabra de Dios, les enviaron a Pedro y a Juan. 15 Estos, al llegar, oraron por ellos para que recibieran el Espíritu Santo, 16 porque el Espíritu aún no había descendido sobre ninguno de ellos; solamente habían sido bautizados en el nombre del Señor Jesús. 17 Entonces Pedro y Juan les impusieron las manos y ellos recibieron el Espíritu Santo.
18 Al ver Simón que mediante la imposición de las manos de los apóstoles se daba el Espíritu Santo, les ofreció dinero 19 y pidió:
—Denme también a mí ese poder, para que todos a quienes yo les imponga las manos reciban el Espíritu Santo.
20 —¡Que tu dinero perezca contigo —contestó Pedro—, porque intentaste comprar el don de Dios con dinero! 21 No tienes arte ni parte en este asunto, porque no eres íntegro delante de Dios. 22 Por eso, arrepiéntete de tu maldad y ruega al Señor. Tal vez te perdone el haber tenido esa mala intención. 23 Veo que vas camino a la amargura y a la esclavitud de la maldad.
24 —Rueguen al Señor por mí —respondió Simón—, para que no me suceda nada de lo que han dicho.
25 Después de testificar y proclamar la palabra del Señor, Pedro y Juan se pusieron en camino de vuelta a Jerusalén y de paso predicaron las buenas noticias en muchas poblaciones de los samaritanos.
Felipe y el etíope
26 Un ángel del Señor dijo a Felipe: «Ponte en marcha hacia el sur, por el camino del desierto que baja de Jerusalén a Gaza». 27 Felipe emprendió el viaje, y resulta que se encontró con un etíope eunuco, alto funcionario encargado de todo el tesoro de la Candace, reina de los etíopes. Este había ido a Jerusalén para adorar 28 y, de regreso a su país, iba sentado en su carro leyendo el libro del profeta Isaías. 29 El Espíritu dijo a Felipe: «Acércate y júntate a ese carro».
30 Felipe se acercó de prisa al carro y, al oír que el hombre leía al profeta Isaías, preguntó:
—¿Acaso entiende usted lo que está leyendo?
31 —¿Y cómo voy a entenderlo —contestó— si nadie me lo explica?
Así que invitó a Felipe a subir y sentarse con él. 32 El pasaje de la Escritura que estaba leyendo era el siguiente:
«Como cordero fue llevado al matadero,
como oveja que enmudece ante su trasquilador,
ni siquiera abrió su boca.
33 Lo humillaron y no le hicieron justicia.
¿Quién describirá su descendencia?
Porque su vida fue arrancada de la tierra».[a]
34 —Dígame usted, por favor, ¿de quién habla aquí el profeta, de sí mismo o de algún otro? —preguntó el eunuco a Felipe.
35 Entonces Felipe, comenzando con ese mismo pasaje de la Escritura, le anunció las buenas noticias acerca de Jesús. 36 Mientras iban por el camino, llegaron a un lugar donde había agua y el eunuco dijo:
—Mire usted, aquí hay agua. ¿Qué impide que yo sea bautizado? 37 [b]
38 Entonces mandó parar el carro, ambos bajaron al agua y Felipe lo bautizó. 39 Cuando subieron del agua, el Espíritu del Señor se llevó de repente a Felipe. El eunuco no volvió a verlo, pero siguió alegre su camino. 40 En cuanto a Felipe, apareció en Azoto y se fue predicando las buenas noticias por todos los pueblos hasta que llegó a Cesarea.

The church scatters
At that time, the church in Jerusalem began to be subjected to vicious harassment. Everyone except the apostles was scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria. 2 Some pious men buried Stephen and deeply grieved over him. 3 Saul began to wreak havoc against the church. Entering one house after another, he would drag off both men and women and throw them into prison.
Philip in Samaria
4 Those who had been scattered moved on, preaching the good news along the way. 5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria[a] and began to preach Christ to them. 6 The crowds were united by what they heard Philip say and the signs they saw him perform, and they gave him their undivided attention. 7 With loud shrieks, unclean spirits came out of many people, and many who were paralyzed or crippled were healed. 8 There was great rejoicing in that city.
9 Before Philip’s arrival, a certain man named Simon had practiced sorcery in that city and baffled the people of Samaria. He claimed to be a great person. 10 Everyone, from the least to the greatest, gave him their undivided attention and referred to him as “the power of God called Great.” 11 He had their attention because he had baffled them with sorcery for a long time. 12 After they came to believe Philip, who preached the good news about God’s kingdom and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. 13 Even Simon himself came to believe and was baptized. Afterward, he became one of Philip’s supporters. As he saw firsthand the signs and great miracles that were happening, he was astonished.
14 When word reached the apostles in Jerusalem that Samaria had accepted God’s word, they commissioned Peter and John to go to Samaria. 15 Peter and John went down to Samaria where they prayed that the new believers would receive the Holy Spirit. (16 This was because the Holy Spirit had not yet fallen on any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 So Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
18 When Simon perceived that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money. 19 He said, “Give me this authority too so that anyone on whom I lay my hands will receive the Holy Spirit.”
20 Peter responded, “May your money be condemned to hell along with you because you believed you could buy God’s gift with money! 21 You can have no part or share in God’s word because your heart isn’t right with God. 22 Therefore, change your heart and life! Turn from your wickedness! Plead with the Lord in the hope that your wicked intent can be forgiven, 23 for I see that your bitterness has poisoned you and evil has you in chains.”
24 Simon replied, “All of you, please, plead to the Lord for me so that nothing of what you have said will happen to me!” 25 After the apostles had testified and proclaimed the Lord’s word, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the good news to many Samaritan villages along the way.
Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch
26 An angel from the Lord spoke to Philip, “At noon, take[b] the road that leads from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a desert road.) 27 So he did. Meanwhile, an Ethiopian man was on his way home from Jerusalem, where he had come to worship. He was a eunuch and an official responsible for the entire treasury of Candace. (Candace is the title given to the Ethiopian queen.) 28 He was reading the prophet Isaiah while sitting in his carriage. 29 The Spirit told Philip, “Approach this carriage and stay with it.”
30 Running up to the carriage, Philip heard the man reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, “Do you really understand what you are reading?”
31 The man replied, “Without someone to guide me, how could I?” Then he invited Philip to climb up and sit with him. 32 This was the passage of scripture he was reading:
Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter
and like a lamb before its shearer is silent
so he didn’t open his mouth.
33 In his humiliation justice was taken away from him.
Who can tell the story of his descendants
because his life was taken from the earth?[c]
34 The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, about whom does the prophet say this? Is he talking about himself or someone else?” 35 Starting with that passage, Philip proclaimed the good news about Jesus to him. 36 As they went down the road, they came to some water.
The eunuch said, “Look! Water! What would keep me from being baptized?”[d] 38 He ordered that the carriage halt. Both Philip and the eunuch went down to the water, where Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Lord’s Spirit suddenly took Philip away. The eunuch never saw him again but went on his way rejoicing. 40 Philip found himself in Azotus. He traveled through that area, preaching the good news in all the cities until he reached Caesarea.

The Church Persecuted and Scattered
On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered(B) throughout Judea and Samaria.(C) 2 Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. 3 But Saul(D) began to destroy the church.(E) Going from house to house, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison.
Philip in Samaria
4 Those who had been scattered(F) preached the word wherever they went.(G) 5 Philip(H) went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. 7 For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many,(I) and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed.(J) 8 So there was great joy in that city.
Simon the Sorcerer
9 Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery(K) in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great,(L) 10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, “This man is rightly called the Great Power of God.”(M) 11 They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery. 12 But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God(N) and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized,(O) both men and women. 13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles(P) he saw.
14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria(Q) had accepted the word of God,(R) they sent Peter and John(S) to Samaria. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit,(T) 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them;(U) they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.(V) 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them,(W) and they received the Holy Spirit.(X)
18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money 19 and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”
20 Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!(Y) 21 You have no part or share(Z) in this ministry, because your heart is not right(AA) before God. 22 Repent(AB) of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.”
24 Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me(AC) so that nothing you have said may happen to me.”
25 After they had further proclaimed the word of the Lord(AD) and testified about Jesus, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages.(AE)
Philip and the Ethiopian
26 Now an angel(AF) of the Lord said to Philip,(AG) “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” 27 So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian[a](AH) eunuch,(AI) an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship,(AJ) 28 and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. 29 The Spirit told(AK) Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.”
30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked.
31 “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
32 This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading:
“He was led like a sheep to the slaughter,
and as a lamb before its shearer is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
33 In his humiliation he was deprived of justice.
Who can speak of his descendants?
For his life was taken from the earth.”[b](AL)
34 The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” 35 Then Philip began(AM) with that very passage of Scripture(AN) and told him the good news(AO) about Jesus.
36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?”(AP) [37] [c] 38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away,(AQ) and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. 40 Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns(AR) until he reached Caesarea.(AS)
