8 Y Saulo estaba allí, aprobando la muerte de Esteban.
La iglesia perseguida y dispersa
Aquel día se desató una gran persecución contra la iglesia en Jerusalén y todos, excepto los apóstoles, se dispersaron por las regiones de Judea y Samaria. 2 Unos hombres piadosos sepultaron a Esteban e hicieron gran duelo por él. 3 Saulo, por su parte, causaba estragos en la iglesia: entraba de casa en casa, arrastraba a hombres y mujeres y los encarcelaba.
Felipe en Samaria
4 Los que se habían dispersado predicaban la palabra por dondequiera que iban. 5 Felipe bajó a una ciudad de Samaria y les anunciaba al Cristo. 6 Al oír a Felipe y ver las señales que realizaba, mucha gente se reunía y todos prestaban atención a su mensaje. 7 De muchos endemoniados los espíritus malignos salían dando gritos, y un gran número de paralíticos y cojos quedaban sanos. 8 Y aquella ciudad se llenó de alegría.
Simón el hechicero
9 Ya desde antes había en esa ciudad un hombre llamado Simón que, jactándose de ser un gran personaje, practicaba la hechicería y asombraba a la gente de Samaria. 10 Todos, desde el más pequeño hasta el más grande, le prestaban atención y exclamaban: «¡Este hombre es al que llaman el Gran Poder de Dios!».
11 Lo seguían porque por mucho tiempo los había tenido deslumbrados con sus artes mágicas. 12 Pero cuando creyeron a Felipe, quien anunciaba las buenas noticias del reino de Dios y el nombre de Jesucristo, tanto hombres como mujeres se bautizaron. 13 Simón mismo creyó y, después de bautizarse, seguía a Felipe por todas partes, asombrado de los grandes milagros y señales que veía.
14 Cuando los apóstoles que estaban en Jerusalén se enteraron de que los samaritanos habían aceptado la palabra de Dios, les enviaron a Pedro y a Juan. 15 Estos, al llegar, oraron por ellos para que recibieran el Espíritu Santo, 16 porque el Espíritu aún no había descendido sobre ninguno de ellos; solamente habían sido bautizados en el nombre del Señor Jesús. 17 Entonces Pedro y Juan les impusieron las manos y ellos recibieron el Espíritu Santo.
18 Al ver Simón que mediante la imposición de las manos de los apóstoles se daba el Espíritu Santo, les ofreció dinero 19 y pidió:
—Denme también a mí ese poder, para que todos a quienes yo les imponga las manos reciban el Espíritu Santo.
20 —¡Que tu dinero perezca contigo —contestó Pedro—, porque intentaste comprar el don de Dios con dinero! 21 No tienes arte ni parte en este asunto, porque no eres íntegro delante de Dios. 22 Por eso, arrepiéntete de tu maldad y ruega al Señor. Tal vez te perdone el haber tenido esa mala intención. 23 Veo que vas camino a la amargura y a la esclavitud de la maldad.
24 —Rueguen al Señor por mí —respondió Simón—, para que no me suceda nada de lo que han dicho.
25 Después de testificar y proclamar la palabra del Señor, Pedro y Juan se pusieron en camino de vuelta a Jerusalén y de paso predicaron las buenas noticias en muchas poblaciones de los samaritanos.
Felipe y el etíope
26 Un ángel del Señor dijo a Felipe: «Ponte en marcha hacia el sur, por el camino del desierto que baja de Jerusalén a Gaza». 27 Felipe emprendió el viaje, y resulta que se encontró con un etíope eunuco, alto funcionario encargado de todo el tesoro de la Candace, reina de los etíopes. Este había ido a Jerusalén para adorar 28 y, de regreso a su país, iba sentado en su carro leyendo el libro del profeta Isaías. 29 El Espíritu dijo a Felipe: «Acércate y júntate a ese carro».
30 Felipe se acercó de prisa al carro y, al oír que el hombre leía al profeta Isaías, preguntó:
—¿Acaso entiende usted lo que está leyendo?
31 —¿Y cómo voy a entenderlo —contestó— si nadie me lo explica?
Así que invitó a Felipe a subir y sentarse con él. 32 El pasaje de la Escritura que estaba leyendo era el siguiente:
«Como cordero fue llevado al matadero,
como oveja que enmudece ante su trasquilador,
ni siquiera abrió su boca.
33 Lo humillaron y no le hicieron justicia.
¿Quién describirá su descendencia?
Porque su vida fue arrancada de la tierra».[a]
34 —Dígame usted, por favor, ¿de quién habla aquí el profeta, de sí mismo o de algún otro? —preguntó el eunuco a Felipe.
35 Entonces Felipe, comenzando con ese mismo pasaje de la Escritura, le anunció las buenas noticias acerca de Jesús. 36 Mientras iban por el camino, llegaron a un lugar donde había agua y el eunuco dijo:
—Mire usted, aquí hay agua. ¿Qué impide que yo sea bautizado? 37 [b]
38 Entonces mandó parar el carro, ambos bajaron al agua y Felipe lo bautizó. 39 Cuando subieron del agua, el Espíritu del Señor se llevó de repente a Felipe. El eunuco no volvió a verlo, pero siguió alegre su camino. 40 En cuanto a Felipe, apareció en Azoto y se fue predicando las buenas noticias por todos los pueblos hasta que llegó a Cesarea.

8 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.
2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.
3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.
4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.
5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.
6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.
7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.
8 And there was great joy in that city.
9 But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:
10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.
11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.
12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.
20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.
22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.
23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.
24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.
25 And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.
26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.
27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,
28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.
29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.
34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.

Saul Persecutes the Church
8 Now Saul was consenting to his death.
At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and (A)they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and (B)made great lamentation over him.
3 As for Saul, (C)he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison.
Christ Is Preached in Samaria
4 Therefore (D)those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word. 5 Then (E)Philip went down to [a]the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. 6 And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7 For (F)unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. 8 And there was great joy in that city.
The Sorcerer’s Profession of Faith
9 But there was a certain man called Simon, who previously (G)practiced [b]sorcery in the city and (H)astonished the [c]people of Samaria, claiming that he was someone great, 10 to whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is the great power of God.” 11 And they heeded him because he had astonished them with his [d]sorceries for a long time. 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the things (I)concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. 13 Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized he continued with Philip, and was amazed, seeing the miracles and signs which were done.
The Sorcerer’s Sin
14 Now when the (J)apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them (K)that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For (L)as yet He had fallen upon none of them. (M)They had only been baptized in (N)the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then (O)they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”
20 But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because (P)you thought that (Q)the gift of God could be purchased with money! 21 You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your (R)heart is not right in the sight of God. 22 Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God (S)if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are (T)poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.”
24 Then Simon answered and said, (U)“Pray to the Lord for me, that none of the things which you have spoken may come upon me.”
25 So when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.
Christ Is Preached to an Ethiopian(V)
26 Now an angel of the Lord spoke to (W)Philip, saying, “Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is [e]desert. 27 So he arose and went. And behold, (X)a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and (Y)had come to Jerusalem to worship, 28 was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. 29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go near and overtake this chariot.”
30 So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?”
31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 The place in the Scripture which he read was this:
(Z)“He was led as a sheep to the slaughter;
And as a lamb before its shearer is silent,
(AA)So He opened not His mouth.
33 In His humiliation His (AB)justice was taken away,
And who will declare His generation?
For His life is (AC)taken from the earth.”
34 So the eunuch answered Philip and said, “I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?” 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, (AD)and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. 36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. (AE)What hinders me from being baptized?”
37 [f]Then Philip said, (AF)“If you believe with all your heart, you may.”
And he answered and said, (AG)“I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”
38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39 Now when they came up out of the water, (AH)the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip was found at [g]Azotus. Persecución contra los creyentes
A partir de ese día empezó una gran persecución contra la iglesia de Jerusalén. Toda la iglesia huyó a diferentes lugares de Judea y Samaria. Sólo los apóstoles se quedaron en Jerusalén. 2 Unos hombres piadosos enterraron a Esteban y lloraron mucho por él. 3 Saulo también trataba de destruir al grupo, entraba en las casas donde se reunían, sacaba tanto a hombres como a mujeres y los metía en la cárcel. 4 Sin embargo, todos los que huían iban anunciado el mensaje de las buenas noticias de salvación por dondequiera que iban.
Felipe anuncia el mensaje en Samaria
5 Felipe[a] fue a la ciudad de Samaria y allí anunció el mensaje acerca del Mesías. 6 Un gran número de samaritanos escuchaba a Felipe, veía las señales milagrosas que hacía y le prestaba mucha atención a su mensaje. 7 Muchos que tenían espíritus malignos fueron sanados; los espíritus les salían dando alaridos. También fueron sanados muchos inválidos y paralíticos. 8 Los habitantes de esa ciudad estaban muy contentos.
9 Había un hombre llamado Simón que practicaba la brujería. Él tenía muy impresionada a la gente de Samaria, pretendiendo ser un gran personaje. 10 Todos, importantes o no, le prestaban atención y decían: «Este hombre es “el gran poder divino”». 11 Simón los tenía tan impresionados con sus brujerías que la gente lo seguía. 12 Pero cuando Felipe le anunció al pueblo las buenas noticias del reino de Dios y del poder de Jesucristo, tanto hombres como mujeres le creyeron a Felipe y fueron bautizados. 13 Simón mismo creyó y fue bautizado. Seguía a Felipe muy de cerca, asombrado también con las maravillas tan poderosas y las señales milagrosas que Felipe hacía.
14 Cuando los apóstoles supieron en Jerusalén que los de Samaria había aceptado la palabra de Dios, les enviaron a Pedro y a Juan. 15 Cuando llegaron a Samaria después de bajar de Jerusalén, Pedro y Juan oraron para que los creyentes de Samaria recibieran el Espíritu Santo, 16 porque el Espíritu no había venido sobre ninguno de ellos. Solamente se habían bautizado en el nombre del Señor Jesús. 17 Después de orar, Pedro y Juan les impusieron las manos y recibieron el Espíritu Santo.
18 Al ver Simón que el Espíritu Santo se daba cuando Pedro y Juan imponían las manos, les ofreció dinero a los apóstoles 19 y les dijo:
—Denme ese poder para que a quien yo le imponga las manos reciba el Espíritu Santo.
20 Entonces Pedro le respondió:
—¡Púdrete con tu dinero! ¿Pensaste que podías comprar el don de Dios? 21 No tienes arte ni parte en nuestro trabajo porque Dios sabe que tienes la mente retorcida. 22 ¡Abandona tu maldad! Pídele al Señor que perdone tus malas intenciones. 23 Veo que estás lleno de amargura y de envidia, vives atado por el pecado.
24 Entonces Simón contestó:
—Pidan por mí al Señor, para que no me pase nada de lo que ustedes han dicho.
25 Una vez que los apóstoles dieron testimonio de lo que sabían de Jesucristo y anunciaron el mensaje del Señor, regresaron a Jerusalén. Por el camino, entraron a muchos pueblos samaritanos y anunciaron la buena noticia de salvación.
Felipe y el funcionario de Etiopía
26 Un ángel del Señor le habló a Felipe: «Prepárate para ir al sur por el camino que baja de Jerusalén a Gaza, el camino que cruza el desierto». 27 Entonces Felipe fue y encontró a un eunuco etíope, funcionario de la Candace, o sea la reina de Etiopía. Él estaba a cargo de todos los tesoros de ella y había viajado a Jerusalén para adorar a Dios. 28 Ahora regresaba a casa, sentado en su carruaje y leyendo el libro del profeta Isaías. 29 El Espíritu le dijo a Felipe: «Ve y acércate a ese carruaje». 30 Felipe corrió hacia el carruaje y escuchó al funcionario leyendo el libro del profeta Isaías. Entonces Felipe le dijo:
—¿Entiendes lo que lees?
31 El funcionario le dijo:
—¿Cómo voy a entenderlo sin tener quien me lo explique?
Entonces el funcionario invitó a Felipe para que subiera y se sentara con él. 32 La parte de la Escritura que estaba leyendo era esta:
«Fue llevado como oveja al matadero;
como un cordero que no se queja
cuando le cortan la lana, no dijo nada.
33 (A)Fue humillado y le quitaron todos sus derechos.
Su vida en la tierra terminó;
no habrá ningún relato acerca de sus descendientes».[b]
34 El funcionario le preguntó a Felipe:
—Por favor dime, ¿de quién está hablando el profeta? ¿Está hablando de él mismo o de otra persona?
35 Entonces Felipe comenzó a hablar. Empezó desde esta misma Escritura y le contó la buena noticia acerca de Jesús. 36 Mientras viajaban por el camino, llegaron a un lugar donde había agua, y el funcionario dijo:
—Mira, aquí hay agua; ¿qué me impide ser bautizado? 37 [c]
38 Entonces el funcionario ordenó que detuvieran el carruaje, y ambos, Felipe y el funcionario, entraron al agua y Felipe lo bautizó. 39 Cuando salieron del agua, el Espíritu del Señor se llevó a Felipe. El funcionario ya no lo volvió a ver y siguió muy feliz su camino. 40 Felipe apareció en la ciudad de Azoto, y anunció la buena noticia de salvación por todos los pueblos por donde pasaba en su viaje, hasta que llegó a Cesarea.
