8 Y Saulo estaba de completo acuerdo con ellos en su muerte(A).
Saulo persigue a la iglesia
En aquel día se desató una gran persecución en contra de la iglesia(B) en Jerusalén, y todos fueron esparcidos(C) por las regiones de Judea y Samaria(D), excepto los apóstoles. 2 Y algunos hombres piadosos sepultaron a Esteban, y lloraron a gran voz[a] por él. 3 Pero Saulo hacía estragos en la iglesia(E) entrando de casa en casa, y arrastrando a hombres y mujeres, los echaba en[b] la cárcel(F).
Predicación de Felipe en Samaria
4 Así que los que habían sido esparcidos(G) iban predicando[c] la palabra(H). 5 Felipe(I), descendiendo a la ciudad de Samaria, les predicaba a Cristo[d]. 6 Y las multitudes unánimes prestaban atención a lo que Felipe decía, al oír y ver las señales[e] que hacía. 7 Porque de muchos que tenían espíritus inmundos, estos salían de ellos(J) gritando a gran voz; y muchos que habían sido paralíticos y cojos eran sanados(K). 8 Y había gran regocijo(L) en aquella ciudad.
Simón el mago
9 Y cierto hombre llamado Simón, hacía tiempo que estaba ejerciendo la magia(M) en la ciudad y asombrando a la gente de Samaria, pretendiendo ser un gran personaje(N); 10 y todos, desde el menor hasta el mayor, le prestaban atención, diciendo: Este es el que se llama el Gran Poder de Dios(O). 11 Le prestaban atención porque por mucho tiempo los había asombrado con sus artes mágicas(P). 12 Pero cuando creyeron a Felipe, que anunciaba las buenas nuevas del reino de Dios(Q) y el nombre de Cristo Jesús, se bautizaban(R), tanto hombres como mujeres. 13 Y aun Simón mismo creyó; y después de bautizarse, continuó con Felipe, y estaba atónito al ver las señales(S) y los grandes milagros(T) que se hacían.
Pedro y Juan en Samaria
14 Cuando los apóstoles que estaban en Jerusalén(U) oyeron que Samaria había recibido la palabra de Dios, les enviaron a Pedro y a Juan(V), 15 quienes descendieron y oraron por ellos para que recibieran el Espíritu Santo(W), 16 pues todavía no había descendido sobre ninguno de ellos(X); solo habían sido bautizados en el nombre del Señor Jesús(Y). 17 Entonces les imponían(Z) las manos, y recibían el Espíritu Santo(AA). 18 Cuando Simón vio que el Espíritu se daba por la imposición de las manos de los apóstoles, les ofreció dinero, 19 diciendo: Dadme también a mí esta autoridad, de manera que todo aquel sobre quien ponga mis manos reciba el Espíritu Santo. 20 Entonces Pedro le dijo: Que tu plata perezca[f] contigo, porque pensaste que podías obtener el don de Dios con dinero(AB). 21 No tienes parte ni suerte(AC) en este asunto[g], porque tu corazón no es recto delante de Dios(AD). 22 Por tanto, arrepiéntete de esta tu maldad, y ruega al Señor que si es posible se te perdone el intento de tu corazón(AE). 23 Porque veo que estás en hiel de amargura y en cadena[h] de iniquidad(AF). 24 Pero Simón respondió y dijo: Rogad vosotros al Señor por mí, para que no me sobrevenga nada de lo que habéis dicho.
25 Y ellos, después de haber testificado solemnemente(AG) y hablado la palabra del Señor(AH), iniciaron el regreso a Jerusalén anunciando el evangelio(AI) en muchas aldeas de los samaritanos(AJ).
Felipe y el etíope eunuco
26 Un ángel del Señor(AK) habló a Felipe(AL), diciendo: Levántate y ve hacia el sur, al camino que desciende de Jerusalén a Gaza(AM). (Este es un camino desierto[i].) 27 Él se levantó y fue; y he aquí, había un[j] eunuco etíope(AN), alto oficial de Candace, reina de los etíopes, el cual estaba encargado de todos sus tesoros, y había venido a Jerusalén para adorar(AO). 28 Regresaba sentado en su carruaje, y leía al profeta Isaías. 29 Y el Espíritu dijo(AP) a Felipe: Ve y júntate a ese carruaje. 30 Cuando Felipe se acercó corriendo, le oyó leer al profeta Isaías, y le dijo: ¿Entiendes lo que lees? 31 Y él respondió: ¿Cómo podré, a menos que alguien me guíe? E invitó a Felipe a que subiera y se sentara con él. 32 El pasaje de la Escritura que estaba leyendo era este:
(AQ)Como oveja fue llevado al matadero;
y como cordero, mudo delante del que lo trasquila,
no abre Él su boca.
33 En su humillación no se le hizo justicia[k];
¿quién contará[l] su generación[m]?
Porque su vida es quitada de la tierra.
34 El eunuco respondió a Felipe y dijo: Te ruego que me digas, ¿de quién dice esto el profeta? ¿De sí mismo, o de algún otro? 35 Entonces Felipe abrió su boca(AR), y comenzando desde esta Escritura, le anunció el evangelio(AS) de Jesús(AT). 36 Yendo por el camino, llegaron a un lugar donde había agua; y el eunuco dijo*: Mira, agua. ¿Qué impide que yo sea bautizado(AU)? 37 [n]Y Felipe dijo: Si crees con todo tu corazón, puedes. Respondió él y dijo: Creo que Jesucristo es el Hijo de Dios. 38 Y mandó parar el carruaje; ambos descendieron al agua, Felipe y el eunuco, y lo bautizó. 39 Al salir ellos del agua, el Espíritu del Señor arrebató(AV) a Felipe; y no lo vio más el eunuco, que continuó su camino gozoso. 40 Mas Felipe se encontró[o] en Azoto[p](AW), y por donde pasaba, anunciaba el evangelio en todas las ciudades(AX), hasta que llegó a Cesarea(AY).

Saulo persigue a la iglesia
8 Y Saulo consentía en su muerte. En aquel día hubo una gran persecución contra la iglesia que estaba en Jerusalén; y todos fueron esparcidos por las tierras de Judea y de Samaria, salvo los apóstoles. 2 Y hombres piadosos llevaron a enterrar a Esteban, e hicieron gran llanto sobre él. 3 Y Saulo asolaba la iglesia, y entrando casa por casa, arrastraba a hombres y a mujeres, y los entregaba en la cárcel.(A)
Predicación del evangelio en Samaria
4 Pero los que fueron esparcidos iban por todas partes anunciando el evangelio. 5 Entonces Felipe, descendiendo a la ciudad de Samaria, les predicaba a Cristo. 6 Y la gente, unánime, escuchaba atentamente las cosas que decía Felipe, oyendo y viendo las señales que hacía. 7 Porque de muchos que tenían espíritus inmundos, salían estos dando grandes voces; y muchos paralíticos y cojos eran sanados; 8 así que había gran gozo en aquella ciudad.
9 Pero había un hombre llamado Simón, que antes ejercía la magia en aquella ciudad, y había engañado a la gente de Samaria, haciéndose pasar por algún grande. 10 A este oían atentamente todos, desde el más pequeño hasta el más grande, diciendo: Este es el gran poder de Dios. 11 Y le estaban atentos, porque con sus artes mágicas les había engañado mucho tiempo. 12 Pero cuando creyeron a Felipe, que anunciaba el evangelio del reino de Dios y el nombre de Jesucristo, se bautizaban hombres y mujeres. 13 También creyó Simón mismo, y habiéndose bautizado, estaba siempre con Felipe; y viendo las señales y grandes milagros que se hacían, estaba atónito.
14 Cuando los apóstoles que estaban en Jerusalén oyeron que Samaria había recibido la palabra de Dios, enviaron allá a Pedro y a Juan; 15 los cuales, habiendo venido, oraron por ellos para que recibiesen el Espíritu Santo; 16 porque aún no había descendido sobre ninguno de ellos, sino que solamente habían sido bautizados en el nombre de Jesús. 17 Entonces les imponían las manos, y recibían el Espíritu Santo. 18 Cuando vio Simón que por la imposición de las manos de los apóstoles se daba el Espíritu Santo, les ofreció dinero, 19 diciendo: Dadme también a mí este poder, para que cualquiera a quien yo impusiere las manos reciba el Espíritu Santo. 20 Entonces Pedro le dijo: Tu dinero perezca contigo, porque has pensado que el don de Dios se obtiene con dinero. 21 No tienes tú parte ni suerte en este asunto, porque tu corazón no es recto delante de Dios.(B) 22 Arrepiéntete, pues, de esta tu maldad, y ruega a Dios, si quizá te sea perdonado el pensamiento de tu corazón; 23 porque en hiel de amargura y en prisión de maldad veo que estás. 24 Respondiendo entonces Simón, dijo: Rogad vosotros por mí al Señor, para que nada de esto que habéis dicho venga sobre mí.
25 Y ellos, habiendo testificado y hablado la palabra de Dios, se volvieron a Jerusalén, y en muchas poblaciones de los samaritanos anunciaron el evangelio.
Felipe y el etíope
26 Un ángel del Señor habló a Felipe, diciendo: Levántate y ve hacia el sur, por el camino que desciende de Jerusalén a Gaza, el cual es desierto. 27 Entonces él se levantó y fue. Y rogó a Felipe que subiese y se sentara con él. 32 El pasaje de la Escritura que leía era este:

Y como cordero mudo delante del que lo trasquila,
Así no abrió su boca.

Mas su generación, ¿quién la contará?

Y respondiendo, dijo: Creo que Jesucristo es el Hijo de Dios. 38 Y mandó parar el carro; y descendieron ambos al agua, Felipe y el eunuco, y le bautizó. 39 Cuando subieron del agua, el Espíritu del Señor arrebató a Felipe; y el eunuco no le vio más, y siguió gozoso su camino. 40 Pero Felipe se encontró en Azoto; y pasando, anunciaba el evangelio en todas las ciudades, hasta que llegó a Cesarea.

8 Saul approved of putting Stephen to death.
On that day widespread persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem. Most believers, except the apostles, were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.
2 Devout men buried Stephen as they mourned loudly for him.
3 Saul tried to destroy the church. He dragged men and women out of one home after another and threw them into prison.
Some Samaritans Become Believers
4 The believers who were scattered went from place to place, where they spread the word. 5 Philip went to the city of Samaria and told people about the Messiah. 6 The crowds paid close attention to what Philip said. They listened to him and saw the miracles that he performed. 7 Evil spirits screamed as they came out of the many people they had possessed. Many paralyzed and lame people were cured. 8 As a result, that city was extremely happy.
9 A man named Simon lived in that city. He amazed the people of Samaria with his practice of magic. He claimed that he was great. 10 Everyone from children to adults paid attention to him. They said, “This man is the power of God, and that power is called great.” 11 They paid attention to Simon because he had amazed them for a long time with his practice of magic. 12 However, when Philip spread the Good News about God’s kingdom and the one named Jesus Christ, men and women believed him and were baptized. 13 Even Simon believed, and after he was baptized, he became devoted to Philip. Simon was amazed to see the miracles and impressive things that were happening.
14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the Samaritans had accepted God’s word, they sent Peter and John to them. 15 Peter and John went to Samaria and prayed that the Samaritans would receive the Holy Spirit. 16 (Before this the Holy Spirit had not come to any of the Samaritans. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and the Samaritans received the Holy Spirit.
18 Simon saw that the Spirit was given to the Samaritans when the apostles placed their hands on them. So he offered Peter and John money 19 and said, “Give me this power so that anyone I place my hands on will receive the Holy Spirit.”
20 Peter told Simon, “May your money be destroyed with you because you thought you could buy God’s gift. 21 You won’t have any share in this because God can see how twisted your thinking is. 22 So change your wicked thoughts, and ask the Lord if he will forgive you for thinking like this. 23 I can see that you are bitter with jealousy and wrapped up in your evil ways.”
24 Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me that none of the things you said will happen to me.”
25 After they had boldly spoken about the message of the Lord, they spread the Good News in many Samaritan villages on their way back to Jerusalem.
Philip Tells an Ethiopian about Jesus
26 An angel from the Lord said to Philip, “Get up, and take the desert road that goes south from Jerusalem to Gaza.” 27 So Philip went.
An Ethiopian man who had come to Jerusalem to worship was on his way home. The man was a eunuch, a high-ranking official in charge of all the treasures of Queen Candace of Ethiopia. 28 As the official rode along in his carriage, he was reading the prophet Isaiah out loud.
29 The Spirit said to Philip, “Go to that carriage, and stay close to it.”
30 Philip ran to the carriage and could hear the official reading the prophet Isaiah out loud. Philip asked him, “Do you understand what you’re reading?”
31 The official answered, “How can I understand unless someone guides me?” So he invited Philip to sit with him in his carriage.
32 This was the part of the Scriptures that the official was reading:
“He was led like a lamb to the slaughter.
He was like a sheep that is silent
when its wool is cut off.
He didn’t open his mouth.
33 When he humbled himself,
he was not judged fairly.
Who from his generation
will talk about his life on earth being cut short?”
34 The official said to Philip, “I would like to know who the prophet is talking about. Is he talking about himself or someone else?” 35 Then Philip spoke. Starting with that passage, Philip told the official the Good News about Jesus.
36 As they were going along the road, they came to some water. The official said to Philip, “Look, there’s some water. What can keep me from being baptized?” [a] 38 The official ordered the carriage to stop. He and Philip stepped into the water, and Philip baptized him. 39 When they had stepped out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away. The official joyfully continued on his way and didn’t see Philip again.
40 Philip found himself in the city of Azotus. He traveled through all the cities and spread the Good News until he came to the city of Caesarea.

The Church Persecuted and Scattered
On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered(B) throughout Judea and Samaria.(C) 2 Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. 3 But Saul(D) began to destroy the church.(E) Going from house to house, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison.
Philip in Samaria
4 Those who had been scattered(F) preached the word wherever they went.(G) 5 Philip(H) went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. 7 For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many,(I) and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed.(J) 8 So there was great joy in that city.
Simon the Sorcerer
9 Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery(K) in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great,(L) 10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, “This man is rightly called the Great Power of God.”(M) 11 They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery. 12 But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God(N) and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized,(O) both men and women. 13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles(P) he saw.
14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria(Q) had accepted the word of God,(R) they sent Peter and John(S) to Samaria. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit,(T) 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them;(U) they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.(V) 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them,(W) and they received the Holy Spirit.(X)
18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money 19 and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”
20 Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!(Y) 21 You have no part or share(Z) in this ministry, because your heart is not right(AA) before God. 22 Repent(AB) of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.”
24 Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me(AC) so that nothing you have said may happen to me.”
25 After they had further proclaimed the word of the Lord(AD) and testified about Jesus, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages.(AE)
Philip and the Ethiopian
26 Now an angel(AF) of the Lord said to Philip,(AG) “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” 27 So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian[a](AH) eunuch,(AI) an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship,(AJ) 28 and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. 29 The Spirit told(AK) Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.”
30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked.
31 “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
32 This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading:
“He was led like a sheep to the slaughter,
and as a lamb before its shearer is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
33 In his humiliation he was deprived of justice.
Who can speak of his descendants?
For his life was taken from the earth.”[b](AL)
34 The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” 35 Then Philip began(AM) with that very passage of Scripture(AN) and told him the good news(AO) about Jesus.
36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?”(AP) [37] [c] 38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away,(AQ) and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. 40 Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns(AR) until he reached Caesarea.(AS)
