8 ¶ Y Saulo consentía en su muerte. Y en aquel día se hizo una gran persecución en la Iglesia que estaba en Jerusalén; y todos fueron esparcidos por las tierras de Judea y de Samaria, salvo los apóstoles.
2 Y llevaron a enterrar a Esteban varones píos, e hicieron gran llanto sobre él.
3 Entonces Saulo asolaba la Iglesia, entrando por las casas; y trayendo hombres y mujeres, los entregaba en la cárcel.
4 ¶ Mas los que fueron esparcidos, pasaban por la tierra anunciando la Palabra del Evangelio.
5 Entonces Felipe, descendiendo a la ciudad de Samaria, les predicaba el Cristo.
6 Y el pueblo escuchaba atentamente unánimes las cosas que decía Felipe, oyendo y viendo las señales que hacía.
7 Porque muchos espíritus inmundos, salían de los que los tenían, dando grandes voces; y muchos paralíticos y cojos eran sanados;
8 así que había gran gozo en aquella ciudad.
9 Y había un hombre llamado Simón, el cual antes ejercía la magia en aquella ciudad, y había asombrado a la gente de Samaria, diciéndose ser algún grande;
10 al cual oían todos atentamente, desde el más pequeño hasta el más grande, diciendo: Esta es la gran virtud de Dios.
11 Y le estaban atentos, porque con sus artes mágicas los había asombrado mucho tiempo.
12 Pero cuando creyeron a Felipe, que les anunciaba el Evangelio del Reino de Dios y el Nombre de Jesús el Cristo, se bautizaban hombres y mujeres.
13 El mismo Simón creyó también entonces, y bautizándose, se llegó a Felipe; y viendo los milagros y grandes maravillas que se hacían, estaba atónito.
14 ¶ Y los apóstoles que estaban en Jerusalén, habiendo oído que Samaria había recibido la palabra de Dios, les enviaron a Pedro y a Juan;
15 los cuales venidos, oraron por ellos, para que recibieran el Espíritu Santo;
16 (porque aún no había descendido en ninguno de ellos, mas solamente eran bautizados en el Nombre de Jesús.)
17 Entonces les impusieron las manos, y recibieron el Espíritu Santo.
18 Cuando vio Simón que por la imposición de las manos de los apóstoles se daba el Espíritu Santo, les ofreció dinero,
19 diciendo: Dadme también a mí esta potestad, que a cualquiera que pusiere las manos encima, reciba el Espíritu Santo.
20 Entonces Pedro le dijo: Tu dinero perezca contigo, qué piensas que el don de Dios se gana por dinero.
21 No tienes tú parte ni suerte en este negocio; porque tu corazón no es recto delante de Dios.
22 Arrepiéntete pues de ésta tu maldad, y ruega a Dios, si quizás te será perdonado este pensamiento de tu corazón.
23 Porque en hiel de amargura y en prisión de maldad veo que estás.
24 Respondiendo entonces Simón, dijo: Rogad vosotros por mí al Señor, que ninguna cosa de éstas que habéis dicho, venga sobre mí.
25 Y ellos, habiendo testificado y hablado la Palabra de Dios, se volvieron a Jerusalén, y en muchas tierras de los samaritanos anunciaron el Evangelio.
26 ¶ Y el ángel del Señor habló a Felipe, diciendo: Levántate y ve hacia el mediodía, al camino que desciende de Jerusalén a Gaza, el cual es desierto.
27 Entonces él se levantó, y fue; y he aquí un Etíope, eunuco, gobernador de Candace, reina de los Etíopes, el cual era puesto sobre todos sus tesoros, y había venido a adorar a Jerusalén,
28 y se volvía sentado en su carro, y leyendo al profeta Isaías.
29 Y el Espíritu dijo a Felipe: Llégate, y júntate a este carro.
30 Y acudiendo Felipe, le oyó que leía al profeta Isaías, y dijo: Pero ¿entiendes lo que lees?
31 Y dijo: ¿Y cómo podré, si alguno no me enseñare? Y rogó a Felipe que subiera, y se sentara con él.
32 Y el lugar de la Escritura que leía, era éste: Como oveja a la muerte fue llevado; y como cordero mudo delante del que le trasquila, así no abrió su boca;
33 en su humillación su juicio fue quitado; mas su generación, ¿Quién la contará? Porque es quitada de la tierra su vida.
34 Y respondiendo el eunuco a Felipe, dijo: Te ruego ¿de quién dice el profeta esto? ¿De sí, o de alguno otro?
35 Entonces Felipe, abriendo su boca, y comenzando desde esta escritura, le anunció el Evangelio de Jesús.
36 Y yendo por el camino, llegaron a cierta agua; y dijo el eunuco: He aquí agua; ¿qué impide que yo sea bautizado?
37 Y Felipe dijo: Si crees de todo corazón, bien puedes. Y respondiendo él, dijo: Creo que Jesús, el Cristo, es Hijo de Dios.
38 Y mandó parar el carro; y descendieron ambos al agua, Felipe y el eunuco; y le bautizó.
39 Cuando subieron del agua, el Espíritu del Señor arrebató a Felipe; y no le vio más el eunuco, y se fue por su camino gozoso.
40 Felipe empero se halló en Azoto; y pasando, anunciaba el Evangelio en todas las ciudades, hasta que llegó a Cesarea.

Dios Habla Hoy
8 Y Saulo estaba allí, dando su aprobación a la muerte de Esteban.
Saulo persigue a la iglesia
Aquel mismo día comenzó una gran persecución contra la iglesia de Jerusalén. Todos, menos los apóstoles, se dispersaron por las regiones de Judea y de Samaria. 2 Algunos hombres piadosos enterraron a Esteban y lloraron mucho por él. 3 Mientras tanto, Saulo perseguía a la iglesia, y entraba de casa en casa para sacar a rastras a hombres y mujeres y mandarlos a la cárcel.
Anuncio del evangelio en Samaria
4 Pero los que tuvieron que salir de Jerusalén anunciaban la buena noticia por dondequiera que iban. 5 Felipe, uno de ellos, se dirigió a la principal ciudad de Samaria y comenzó a hablarles de Cristo. 6 La gente se reunía, y todos escuchaban con atención lo que decía Felipe, pues veían las señales milagrosas hechas por él. 7 Muchas personas que tenían espíritus impuros eran sanadas, y los espíritus salían de ellas gritando; y también muchos paralíticos y tullidos eran sanados. 8 Por esta causa hubo gran alegría en aquel pueblo.
9 Pero había allí un hombre llamado Simón, que antes había practicado la brujería y que había engañado a la gente de Samaria haciéndose pasar por una persona importante. 10 Todos, desde el más pequeño hasta el más grande, lo escuchaban atentamente y decían: «Éste es a quien llaman “el gran poder de Dios”.»
11 Y le hacían caso, porque con su brujería los había engañado durante mucho tiempo. 12 Pero cuando creyeron en la buena noticia que Felipe les anunciaba acerca del reino de Dios y de Jesucristo, tanto hombres como mujeres se bautizaron. 13 Y el mismo Simón creyó y se bautizó, y comenzó a acompañar a Felipe, admirado de los grandes milagros y señales que veía.
14 Cuando los apóstoles que estaban en Jerusalén supieron que los de Samaria habían aceptado el mensaje de Dios, mandaron allá a Pedro y a Juan. 15 Al llegar, oraron por los creyentes de Samaria, para que recibieran el Espíritu Santo. 16 Porque todavía no había venido el Espíritu Santo sobre ninguno de ellos; solamente se habían bautizado en el nombre del Señor Jesús. 17 Entonces Pedro y Juan les impusieron las manos, y así recibieron el Espíritu Santo.
18 Simón, al ver que el Espíritu Santo venía cuando los apóstoles imponían las manos a la gente, les ofreció dinero, 19 y les dijo:
—Denme también a mí ese poder, para que aquel a quien yo le imponga las manos reciba igualmente el Espíritu Santo.
20 Entonces Pedro le contestó:
—¡Que tu dinero se condene contigo, porque has pensado comprar con dinero lo que es un don de Dios! 21 Tú no tienes ningún derecho a recibirlo, porque delante de Dios tu corazón no es recto. 22 Abandona esta maldad tuya, y ruega a Dios, para ver si te perdona el haber pensado así. 23 Porque veo que estás lleno de amargura y que la maldad te tiene preso.
24 Simón contestó:
—Oren ustedes al Señor por mí, para que no me pase nada de esto que me han dicho.
25 Después de dar testimonio y de comunicar la palabra del Señor, los apóstoles anunciaron la buena noticia en muchas de las aldeas de Samaria, y regresaron a Jerusalén.
Felipe y el funcionario etiope
26 Después de esto, un ángel del Señor le dijo a Felipe: «Levántate y vete al sur, por el camino de Jerusalén a Gaza.» Este camino pasa por el desierto. 27 Felipe se levantó y se fue; y en el camino se encontró con un hombre de Etiopía. Era un alto funcionario, tesorero de la reina de Etiopía, el cual había ido a Jerusalén a adorar a Dios. 28 Iba de regreso a su país, sentado en su carro y leyendo el libro del profeta Isaías.
29 El Espíritu le dijo a Felipe: «Ve y acércate a ese carro.» 30 Cuando Felipe se acercó, oyó que el etiope leía el libro de Isaías; entonces le preguntó:
—¿Entiende usted lo que está leyendo?
31 El etiope le contestó:
—¿Cómo lo voy a entender, si no hay quien me lo explique?
Y le pidió a Felipe que subiera y se sentara junto a él. 32 La parte de la Escritura que estaba leyendo era ésta:
«Fue llevado como una oveja al matadero;
como un cordero que se queda callado
delante de los que lo trasquilan,
así tampoco abrió él la boca.
33 Fue humillado, y no se le hizo justicia;
¿quién podrá hablar de su descendencia?
Porque su vida fue arrancada de la tierra.»
34 El funcionario etiope le preguntó a Felipe:
—Dime, por favor, ¿de quién dice esto el profeta: de sí mismo o de algún otro?
35 Entonces Felipe, tomando como punto de partida el lugar de la Escritura que el etiope leía, le anunció la buena noticia acerca de Jesús. 36 Más tarde, al pasar por un sitio donde había agua, el funcionario dijo:
—Aquí hay agua; ¿hay algún inconveniente para que yo sea bautizado?
38 Entonces mandó parar el carro; y los dos bajaron al agua, y Felipe lo bautizó. 39 Cuando subieron del agua, el Espíritu del Señor se llevó a Felipe, y el funcionario no lo volvió a ver; pero siguió su camino lleno de alegría. 40 Felipe se encontró en Azoto, y pasó de pueblo en pueblo anunciando la buena noticia, hasta llegar a Cesarea.

Saul Persecutes the Church
8 Now Saul was consenting to his death.
At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and (A)they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and (B)made great lamentation over him.
3 As for Saul, (C)he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison.
Christ Is Preached in Samaria
4 Therefore (D)those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word. 5 Then (E)Philip went down to [a]the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. 6 And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7 For (F)unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. 8 And there was great joy in that city.
The Sorcerer’s Profession of Faith
9 But there was a certain man called Simon, who previously (G)practiced [b]sorcery in the city and (H)astonished the [c]people of Samaria, claiming that he was someone great, 10 to whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is the great power of God.” 11 And they heeded him because he had astonished them with his [d]sorceries for a long time. 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the things (I)concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. 13 Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized he continued with Philip, and was amazed, seeing the miracles and signs which were done.
The Sorcerer’s Sin
14 Now when the (J)apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them (K)that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For (L)as yet He had fallen upon none of them. (M)They had only been baptized in (N)the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then (O)they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”
20 But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because (P)you thought that (Q)the gift of God could be purchased with money! 21 You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your (R)heart is not right in the sight of God. 22 Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God (S)if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are (T)poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.”
24 Then Simon answered and said, (U)“Pray to the Lord for me, that none of the things which you have spoken may come upon me.”
25 So when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.
Christ Is Preached to an Ethiopian(V)
26 Now an angel of the Lord spoke to (W)Philip, saying, “Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is [e]desert. 27 So he arose and went. And behold, (X)a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and (Y)had come to Jerusalem to worship, 28 was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. 29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go near and overtake this chariot.”
30 So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?”
31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 The place in the Scripture which he read was this:
(Z)“He was led as a sheep to the slaughter;
And as a lamb before its shearer is silent,
(AA)So He opened not His mouth.
33 In His humiliation His (AB)justice was taken away,
And who will declare His generation?
For His life is (AC)taken from the earth.”
34 So the eunuch answered Philip and said, “I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?” 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, (AD)and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. 36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. (AE)What hinders me from being baptized?”
37 [f]Then Philip said, (AF)“If you believe with all your heart, you may.”
And he answered and said, (AG)“I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”
38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39 Now when they came up out of the water, (AH)the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip was found at [g]Azotus. And passing through, he preached in all the cities till he came to (AI)Caesarea.

8 Saul was one of the witnesses, and he agreed completely with the killing of Stephen.
Persecution Scatters the Believers
A great wave of persecution began that day, sweeping over the church in Jerusalem; and all the believers except the apostles were scattered through the regions of Judea and Samaria. 2 (Some devout men came and buried Stephen with great mourning.) 3 But Saul was going everywhere to destroy the church. He went from house to house, dragging out both men and women to throw them into prison.
Philip Preaches in Samaria
4 But the believers who were scattered preached the Good News about Jesus wherever they went. 5 Philip, for example, went to the city of Samaria and told the people there about the Messiah. 6 Crowds listened intently to Philip because they were eager to hear his message and see the miraculous signs he did. 7 Many evil[a] spirits were cast out, screaming as they left their victims. And many who had been paralyzed or lame were healed. 8 So there was great joy in that city.
9 A man named Simon had been a sorcerer there for many years, amazing the people of Samaria and claiming to be someone great. 10 Everyone, from the least to the greatest, often spoke of him as “the Great One—the Power of God.” 11 They listened closely to him because for a long time he had astounded them with his magic.
12 But now the people believed Philip’s message of Good News concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ. As a result, many men and women were baptized. 13 Then Simon himself believed and was baptized. He began following Philip wherever he went, and he was amazed by the signs and great miracles Philip performed.
14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had accepted God’s message, they sent Peter and John there. 15 As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new believers to receive the Holy Spirit. 16 The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them, for they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit.
18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given when the apostles laid their hands on people, he offered them money to buy this power. 19 “Let me have this power, too,” he exclaimed, “so that when I lay my hands on people, they will receive the Holy Spirit!”
20 But Peter replied, “May your money be destroyed with you for thinking God’s gift can be bought! 21 You can have no part in this, for your heart is not right with God. 22 Repent of your wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive your evil thoughts, 23 for I can see that you are full of bitter jealousy and are held captive by sin.”
24 “Pray to the Lord for me,” Simon exclaimed, “that these terrible things you’ve said won’t happen to me!”
25 After testifying and preaching the word of the Lord in Samaria, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem. And they stopped in many Samaritan villages along the way to preach the Good News.
Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch
26 As for Philip, an angel of the Lord said to him, “Go south[b] down the desert road that runs from Jerusalem to Gaza.” 27 So he started out, and he met the treasurer of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under the Kandake, the queen of Ethiopia. The eunuch had gone to Jerusalem to worship, 28 and he was now returning. Seated in his carriage, he was reading aloud from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
29 The Holy Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and walk along beside the carriage.”
30 Philip ran over and heard the man reading from the prophet Isaiah. Philip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?”
31 The man replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” And he urged Philip to come up into the carriage and sit with him.
32 The passage of Scripture he had been reading was this:
“He was led like a sheep to the slaughter.
And as a lamb is silent before the shearers,
he did not open his mouth.
33 He was humiliated and received no justice.
Who can speak of his descendants?
For his life was taken from the earth.”[c]
34 The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, was the prophet talking about himself or someone else?” 35 So beginning with this same Scripture, Philip told him the Good News about Jesus.
36 As they rode along, they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “Look! There’s some water! Why can’t I be baptized?”[d] 38 He ordered the carriage to stop, and they went down into the water, and Philip baptized him.
39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away. The eunuch never saw him again but went on his way rejoicing. 40 Meanwhile, Philip found himself farther north at the town of Azotus. He preached the Good News there and in every town along the way until he came to Caesarea.
