Castigo de Ananías y Safira

5 Pero cierto hombre llamado Ananías, con Safira su mujer, vendió una propiedad, 2 y se quedó con parte del precio(A), sabiéndolo también su[a] mujer; y trayendo la otra[b] parte, la puso a los pies de los apóstoles(B). 3 Mas Pedro dijo: Ananías, ¿por qué ha llenado Satanás(C) tu corazón para mentir al Espíritu Santo(D), y quedarte con parte del precio(E) del terreno? 4 Mientras estaba sin venderse, ¿no te pertenecía? Y después de vendida, ¿no estaba bajo tu poder? ¿Por qué concebiste[c] este asunto en tu corazón? No has mentido a los hombres sino a Dios(F). 5 Al oír Ananías estas palabras, cayó y expiró(G); y vino un gran temor sobre todos los que lo supieron[d](H). 6 Y los jóvenes[e] se levantaron y lo cubrieron(I), y sacándolo, le dieron sepultura.

7 Después de un lapso como de tres horas entró su mujer, no sabiendo lo que había sucedido. 8 Y Pedro le preguntó[f]: Dime, ¿vendisteis el terreno en tanto? Y ella dijo: Sí, ese fue el precio[g](J). 9 Entonces Pedro le dijo: ¿Por qué os pusisteis de acuerdo para poner a prueba(K) al Espíritu del Señor(L)? Mira, los pies de los que sepultaron a tu marido están a la puerta, y te sacarán también a ti. 10 Al instante ella cayó a los pies de él, y expiró(M). Al entrar los jóvenes, la hallaron muerta, y la sacaron y le dieron sepultura junto a su marido. 11 Y vino un gran temor sobre toda la iglesia, y sobre todos los que supieron[h] estas cosas(N).

Muchas señales y prodigios

12 Por mano de los apóstoles se realizaban muchas señales[i] y prodigios(O) entre el pueblo; y estaban todos unánimes en el pórtico de Salomón(P). 13 Pero ninguno de los demás se atrevía a juntarse con ellos; sin embargo, el pueblo los tenía en gran estima(Q). 14 Y más y más creyentes(R) en el Señor, multitud de hombres y de mujeres, se añadían constantemente al número de ellos(S), 15 a tal punto que aun sacaban los enfermos a las calles y los tendían en lechos y camillas, para que al pasar Pedro, siquiera su sombra cayera sobre alguno de ellos(T). 16 También la gente[j] de las ciudades en los alrededores de Jerusalén acudía trayendo enfermos y atormentados por espíritus inmundos, y[k] todos eran sanados.

En la cárcel y libres otra vez

17 Pero levantándose el sumo sacerdote, y todos los que estaban con él (es decir, la secta(U) de los saduceos(V)), se llenaron de celo, 18 y echaron mano a los apóstoles y los pusieron en una cárcel pública(W). 19 Pero un ángel del Señor(X), durante la noche, abrió las puertas de la cárcel, y sacándolos, dijo: 20 Id, y puestos de pie en el templo, hablad[l] al pueblo todo el mensaje[m](Y) de esta Vida. 21 Habiendo oído esto, entraron al amanecer en el templo y enseñaban(Z). Cuando llegaron el sumo sacerdote(AA) y los que estaban con él, convocaron al concilio[n](AB), es decir[o], a todo el senado de los hijos de Israel, y enviaron órdenes a la cárcel para que los trajeran. 22 Pero los alguaciles(AC) que fueron no los encontraron en la cárcel; volvieron, pues, e informaron, 23 diciendo: Encontramos la cárcel cerrada con toda seguridad y los guardias de pie a las puertas; pero cuando abrimos, a nadie hallamos dentro. 24 Cuando oyeron estas palabras, el capitán de la guardia del templo(AD) y los principales sacerdotes se quedaron muy perplejos a causa de ellos, pensando en qué terminaría aquello[p]. 25 Pero alguien se presentó y les informó: Mirad, los hombres que pusisteis en la cárcel están en el templo enseñando al pueblo. 26 Entonces el capitán(AE) fue con los alguaciles(AF) y los trajo sin violencia (porque temían(AG) al pueblo, no fuera que los apedrearan). 27 Cuando los trajeron, los pusieron ante[q] el concilio[r](AH), y el sumo sacerdote los interrogó, 28 diciendo: Os dimos órdenes estrictas de no continuar enseñando en este nombre(AI), y he aquí, habéis llenado a Jerusalén con vuestras enseñanzas, y queréis traer sobre nosotros la sangre de este hombre(AJ). 29 Mas respondiendo Pedro y los apóstoles, dijeron: Debemos obedecer a Dios antes que a los hombres(AK). 30 El Dios de nuestros padres(AL) resucitó a Jesús(AM), a quien vosotros habíais matado[s] colgándole en una cruz[t](AN). 31 A este Dios exaltó a[u] su diestra(AO) como Príncipe[v](AP) y Salvador(AQ), para dar arrepentimiento a Israel, y perdón de pecados(AR). 32 Y nosotros somos testigos[w] de estas cosas(AS); y también el Espíritu Santo(AT), el cual Dios ha dado a los que le obedecen.

El consejo de Gamaliel

33 Cuando ellos oyeron esto, se sintieron profundamente ofendidos[x](AU) y querían matarlos. 34 Pero cierto fariseo llamado Gamaliel(AV), maestro(AW) de la ley, respetado por todo el pueblo, se levantó en el concilio[y](AX) y ordenó que sacaran fuera a los hombres por un momento. 35 Y les dijo: Varones de Israel, tened cuidado de lo que vais a hacer con estos hombres. 36 Porque hace algún tiempo Teudas se levantó pretendiendo ser alguien(AY); y un grupo como de cuatrocientos hombres se unió a él. Y[z] fue muerto, y todos los que lo seguían[aa] fueron dispersos y reducidos a nada. 37 Después de él, se levantó Judas de Galilea en los días del censo(AZ), y llevó mucha gente tras sí; él también pereció, y todos los que lo seguían[ab] se dispersaron. 38 Por tanto, en este caso os digo: no tengáis nada que ver con[ac] estos hombres y dejadlos en paz, porque si este plan o acción[ad] es de los hombres(BA), perecerá; 39 pero si es de Dios, no podréis destruirlos; no sea que os halléis luchando contra Dios(BB). 40 Ellos aceptaron su consejo[ae], y después de llamar a los apóstoles, los azotaron(BC) y les ordenaron que no hablaran en el nombre de Jesús y los soltaron. 41 Ellos, pues, salieron de la presencia del concilio[af](BD), regocijándose de que hubieran sido tenidos por dignos de padecer afrenta por su Nombre[ag](BE). 42 Y todos los días, en el templo y de casa en casa[ah](BF), no cesaban de enseñar y predicar a[ai] Jesús(BG) como el Cristo[aj].

5 Mais un certain Ananias, avec sa femme Saphira, vendit aussi une propriété, et, 2 en accord avec elle, mit de côté une partie de l’argent de la vente, apporta le reste aux apôtres et le leur remit.

3 Pierre lui dit : Ananias, comment as-tu pu laisser Satan envahir à tel point ton cœur ? Tu as menti au Saint-Esprit en cachant le prix réel de ton champ pour en détourner une partie à ton profit ! 4 N’étais-tu pas libre de garder ta propriété ? Ou même, après l’avoir vendue, ne pouvais-tu pas faire de ton argent ce que tu voulais ? Comment as-tu pu décider en toi-même de commettre une telle action ? Ce n’est pas à des hommes que tu as menti, mais à Dieu.

5 A ces mots, Ananias tomba raide mort. Tous ceux qui l’apprirent furent remplis d’une grande crainte. 6 Des jeunes gens vinrent envelopper le corps[a], puis l’emportèrent pour l’enterrer.

7 Environ trois heures plus tard, la femme d’Ananias entra sans savoir ce qui s’était passé.

8 Pierre lui demanda : Dis-moi, est-ce bien à ce prix-là que vous avez vendu votre champ ?

– Oui, répondit-elle, c’est bien à ce prix.

9 Alors Pierre lui dit : Comment avez-vous pu vous concerter pour provoquer ainsi l’Esprit du Seigneur ? Ecoute : ceux qui viennent d’enterrer ton mari sont devant la porte et ils vont t’emporter, toi aussi.

10 Au même instant, elle tomba inanimée aux pieds de Pierre. Les jeunes gens qui rentraient la trouvèrent morte ; ils l’emportèrent et l’enterrèrent aux côtés de son mari.

11 Cet événement inspira une grande crainte à toute l’Eglise[b], ainsi qu’à tous ceux qui en entendirent parler.

Les apôtres, témoins devant le Grand-Conseil

12 Les apôtres accomplissaient beaucoup de signes miraculeux et de prodiges parmi le peuple. Tous les croyants avaient l’habitude de se rassembler dans la cour du Temple, sous le portique de Salomon. 13 Personne d’autre n’osait se joindre à eux, mais le peuple tout entier les tenait en haute estime.

14 Un nombre toujours croissant d’hommes et de femmes croyaient au Seigneur et se joignaient à eux. 15 On allait jusqu’à porter les malades dans les rues, où on les déposait sur des lits ou des civières, pour qu’au passage de Pierre son ombre au moins couvre l’un d’eux. 16 Des villes voisines même, les gens accouraient en foule à Jérusalem pour amener des malades et des personnes tourmentées par de mauvais esprits. Et tous étaient guéris.

17 Alors, poussés par la jalousie, le grand-prêtre et tout son entourage, c’est-à-dire ceux qui appartenaient au parti des sadducéens, décidèrent d’intervenir. 18 Ils firent arrêter les apôtres et les firent incarcérer dans la prison publique.

19 Mais, pendant la nuit, un ange du Seigneur vint ouvrir les portes de la prison et, après avoir fait sortir les apôtres, il leur dit : 20 Allez au Temple et là, proclamez au peuple tout le message de la vie nouvelle.

21 Les apôtres obéirent : dès l’aube, ils se rendirent dans la cour du Temple et se mirent à enseigner. De son côté, le grand-prêtre arriva avec son entourage, et ils convoquèrent le Grand-Conseil et toute l’assemblée des responsables du peuple d’Israël. Ils ordonnèrent d’aller chercher les apôtres à la prison et de les amener.

22 Les gardes s’y rendirent, mais ils ne les trouvèrent pas dans le cachot. A leur retour, ils firent leur rapport : 23 Nous avons trouvé la prison soigneusement fermée, les sentinelles étaient à leur poste devant les portes, mais quand nous avons ouvert le cachot, nous n’y avons trouvé personne.

24 Cette nouvelle plongea le chef de la police du Temple et les chefs des prêtres dans une grande perplexité : ils se demandaient ce qui avait bien pu se passer.

25 Là-dessus, quelqu’un vint leur annoncer : Les hommes que vous avez fait mettre en prison se tiennent dans la cour du Temple et ils enseignent le peuple[c].

26 Aussitôt, le chef de la police du Temple s’y rendit avec un détachement de gardes et ils ramenèrent les apôtres, mais avec ménagements, car ils avaient peur de se faire lapider par le peuple. 27 Après les avoir ramenés, ils les introduisirent dans la salle du Grand-Conseil.

Le grand-prêtre leur dit : 28 Nous vous avions formellement interdit d’enseigner au nom de cet homme. Et voilà que vous avez rempli Jérusalem de votre enseignement, et vous voulez nous rendre responsables de la mort de cet homme.

29 Mais Pierre et les apôtres répondirent : Il faut obéir à Dieu plutôt qu’aux hommes. 30 Le Dieu de nos ancêtres a ressuscité ce Jésus que vous avez mis à mort en le clouant sur le bois. 31 Et c’est lui que Dieu a élevé pour siéger à sa droite[d], comme Chef suprême et Sauveur, pour accorder à Israël la grâce de changer et de recevoir le pardon de ses péchés. 32 Et nous, nous sommes les témoins de ces événements, avec le Saint-Esprit que Dieu a donné à ceux qui lui obéissent.

33 Ces paroles ne firent qu’exaspérer les membres du Grand-Conseil et ils voulaient faire mourir les apôtres.

34 Mais l’un d’entre eux, un pharisien nommé Gamaliel[e], se leva pour donner son avis. C’était un éminent enseignant de la Loi, estimé de tout le peuple. Il demanda que l’on fasse sortir un instant les apôtres, 35 puis il dit : Israélites, faites bien attention à ce que vous allez faire avec ces hommes. 36 Rappelez-vous : il y a quelque temps, on a vu paraître un certain Theudas qui se donnait pour un personnage important. Il a entraîné quelque quatre cents hommes à sa suite. Or, il a été tué, et tous ceux qui s’étaient ralliés à lui furent dispersés et l’on n’en entendit plus parler. 37 Après lui, à l’époque du recensement, Judas de Galilée a fait son apparition. Lui aussi a attiré à lui bien des gens. Il a péri à son tour et tous ses partisans furent mis en déroute.

38 A présent donc, voici mon avis : Ne vous occupez plus de ces hommes et laissez-les partir. De deux choses l’une : ou bien leur projet et leur œuvre viennent des hommes et, dans ce cas, leur mouvement disparaîtra. 39 Ou bien, il vient de Dieu, et alors, vous ne pourrez pas le détruire. Ne prenez pas le risque de lutter contre Dieu.

Le Conseil se rangea à son avis : 40 ils rappelèrent les apôtres, les firent battre, et leur défendirent de parler au nom de Jésus. Après quoi, ils les relâchèrent.

41 Les apôtres quittèrent la salle du Conseil tout joyeux de ce que Dieu les ait jugés dignes de souffrir l’humiliation pour Jésus. 42 Et chaque jour, dans la cour du Temple ou dans les maisons particulières, ils continuaient à enseigner et à annoncer le Messie Jésus.

Ananias and Sapphira

5 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself,(A) but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.(B)

3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan(C) has so filled your heart(D) that you have lied to the Holy Spirit(E) and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?(F) 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal?(G) What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”(H)

5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died.(I) And great fear(J) seized all who heard what had happened. 6 Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body,(K) and carried him out and buried him.

7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”

“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”(L)

9 Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord?(M) Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”

10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died.(N) Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.(O) 11 Great fear(P) seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.

The Apostles Heal Many

12 The apostles performed many signs and wonders(Q) among the people. And all the believers used to meet together(R) in Solomon’s Colonnade.(S) 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.(T) 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.(U) 15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.(V) 16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.(W)

The Apostles Persecuted

17 Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party(X) of the Sadducees,(Y) were filled with jealousy. 18 They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.(Z) 19 But during the night an angel(AA) of the Lord opened the doors of the jail(AB) and brought them out.(AC) 20 “Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people all about this new life.”(AD)

21 At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people.

When the high priest and his associates(AE) arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin(AF)—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles. 22 But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there.(AG) So they went back and reported, 23 “We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” 24 On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests(AH) were at a loss, wondering what this might lead to.

25 Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.” 26 At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people(AI) would stone them.

27 The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin(AJ) to be questioned by the high priest. 28 “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,”(AK) he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”(AL)

29 Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!(AM) 30 The God of our ancestors(AN) raised Jesus from the dead(AO)—whom you killed by hanging him on a cross.(AP) 31 God exalted him to his own right hand(AQ) as Prince and Savior(AR) that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins.(AS) 32 We are witnesses of these things,(AT) and so is the Holy Spirit,(AU) whom God has given to those who obey him.”

33 When they heard this, they were furious(AV) and wanted to put them to death. 34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel,(AW) a teacher of the law,(AX) who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while. 35 Then he addressed the Sanhedrin: “Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. 36 Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. 37 After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census(AY) and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. 38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail.(AZ) 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”(BA)

40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged.(BB) Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing(BC) because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.(BD) 42 Day after day, in the temple courts(BE) and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news(BF) that Jesus is the Messiah.(BG)

Lying to the Holy Spirit

5 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. 2 And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 (A)But Peter said, “Ananias, why has (B)Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? 4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”

5 Then Ananias, hearing these words, (C)fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things. 6 And the young men arose and (D)wrapped him up, carried him out, and buried him.

7 Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 And Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?”

She said, “Yes, for so much.”

9 Then Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together (E)to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” 10 (F)Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her out, buried her by her husband. 11 (G)So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.

Continuing Power in the Church

12 And (H)through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. (I)And they were all with one accord in Solomon’s Porch. 13 Yet (J)none of the rest dared join them, (K)but the people esteemed them highly. 14 And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, 15 so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, (L)that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them. 16 Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing (M)sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.

Imprisoned Apostles Freed

17 (N)Then the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with [a]indignation, 18 (O)and laid their hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison. 19 But at night (P)an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, 20 “Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people (Q)all the words of this life.”

21 And when they heard that, they entered the temple early in the morning and taught. (R)But the high priest and those with him came and called the [b]council together, with all the [c]elders of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.

Apostles on Trial Again

22 But when the officers came and did not find them in the prison, they returned and reported, 23 saying, “Indeed we found the prison shut securely, and the guards standing [d]outside before the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside!” 24 Now when [e]the high priest, (S)the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these things, they wondered what the outcome would be. 25 So one came and told them, [f]saying, “Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!”

26 Then the captain went with the officers and brought them without violence, (T)for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned. 27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, 28 saying, (U)“Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, (V)and intend to bring this Man’s (W)blood on us!”

29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: (X)“We ought to obey God rather than men. 30 (Y)The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by (Z)hanging on a tree. 31 (AA)Him God has exalted to His right hand to be (AB)Prince and (AC)Savior, (AD)to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32 And (AE)we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit (AF)whom God has given to those who obey Him.”

Gamaliel’s Advice

33 When they heard this, they were (AG)furious[g] and plotted to kill them. 34 Then one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named (AH)Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in respect by all the people, and commanded them to put the apostles outside for a little while. 35 And he said to them: “Men of Israel, [h]take heed to yourselves what you intend to do regarding these men. 36 For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody. A number of men, about four hundred, [i]joined him. He was slain, and all who obeyed him were scattered and came to nothing. 37 After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census, and drew away many people after him. He also perished, and all who obeyed him were dispersed. 38 And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; 39 (AI)but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found (AJ)to fight against God.”

40 And they agreed with him, and when they had (AK)called for the apostles (AL)and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 So they departed from the presence of the council, (AM)rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for [j]His name. 42 And daily (AN)in the temple, and in every house, (AO)they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.
