Pablo viaja a Roma

27 Cuando se decidió que navegáramos rumbo a Italia, entregaron a Pablo y a algunos otros presos a un centurión llamado Julio, quien pertenecía al batallón imperial. 2 Subimos a bordo de un barco, con matrícula de Adramitio, que estaba a punto de zarpar hacia los puertos de la provincia de Asia, y nos hicimos a la mar. Nos acompañaba Aristarco, un macedonio de Tesalónica.

3 Al día siguiente, hicimos escala en Sidón, y Julio, con mucha amabilidad, permitió a Pablo visitar a sus amigos para que lo atendieran. 4 Desde Sidón zarpamos y navegamos al abrigo de Chipre, porque los vientos nos eran contrarios. 5 Después de atravesar el mar frente a las costas de Cilicia y Panfilia, arribamos a Mira de Licia. 6 Allí el centurión encontró un barco de Alejandría que iba para Italia, y nos hizo subir a bordo. 7 Durante muchos días la navegación fue lenta y a duras penas llegamos frente a Gnido. Como el viento nos era desfavorable para seguir el rumbo trazado, navegamos al amparo de Creta, frente a Salmona. 8 Seguimos con dificultad a lo largo de la costa y llegamos a un lugar llamado Buenos Puertos, cerca de la ciudad de Lasea.

9 Se había perdido mucho tiempo y era peligrosa la navegación por haber pasado ya la fiesta del ayuno.[a] Así que Pablo advirtió:

10 «Señores, veo que nuestro viaje va a ser desastroso y que va a causar mucho perjuicio tanto para el barco y su carga como para nuestras propias vidas».

11 Pero el centurión, en vez de hacerle caso, siguió el consejo del timonel y del dueño del barco. 12 Como el puerto no era adecuado para invernar, la mayoría decidió que debíamos seguir adelante, con la esperanza de llegar a Fenice, puerto de Creta que da al suroeste y al noroeste, y pasar allí el invierno.

La tempestad

13 Cuando comenzó a soplar un viento suave del sur, creyeron que podían conseguir lo que querían, así que levaron anclas y navegaron junto a la costa de Creta. 14 Poco después se nos vino encima un viento huracanado, llamado Nordeste, que venía desde la isla. 15 El barco quedó atrapado por la tempestad y no podía hacerle frente al viento, así que nos dejamos llevar a la deriva. 16 Mientras pasábamos al abrigo de un islote llamado Cauda, a duras penas pudimos sujetar el bote salvavidas. 17 Después de subirlo a bordo, amarraron con sogas todo el casco del barco para reforzarlo. Temiendo que fueran a encallar en los bancos de arena de la Sirte, echaron el ancla flotante y dejaron el barco a la deriva. 18 Al día siguiente, dado que la tempestad seguía arremetiendo con mucha fuerza contra nosotros, comenzaron a arrojar la carga por la borda. 19 Al tercer día, con sus propias manos arrojaron al mar los aparejos del barco. 20 Como pasaron muchos días sin que aparecieran ni el sol ni las estrellas, y la tempestad seguía azotándonos, perdimos al fin toda esperanza de salvarnos.

21 Llevábamos ya mucho tiempo sin comer, así que Pablo se puso en medio de todos y dijo:

—Señores, debían haber seguido mi consejo y no haber zarpado de Creta; así se habrían ahorrado este perjuicio y esta pérdida. 22 Pero ahora los exhorto a cobrar ánimo, porque ninguno de ustedes perderá la vida; solo se perderá el barco. 23 Anoche se me apareció un ángel del Dios a quien pertenezco y sirvo, 24 y me dijo: “No tengas miedo, Pablo. Tienes que comparecer ante el césar y Dios te ha concedido la vida de todos los que navegan contigo”. 25 Así que ¡ánimo, señores! Confío en Dios que sucederá tal y como se me dijo. 26 Sin embargo, tenemos que encallar en alguna isla.

El naufragio

27 Ya habíamos pasado catorce noches a la deriva por el mar Adriático[b] cuando a eso de la medianoche los marineros presintieron que se aproximaban a tierra. 28 Echaron la sonda y encontraron que el agua tenía unos treinta y siete metros de profundidad. Más adelante volvieron a echar la sonda y encontraron que tenía cerca de veintisiete metros[c] de profundidad. 29 Temiendo que fuéramos a estrellarnos contra las rocas, echaron cuatro anclas por la popa y se pusieron a rogar que amaneciera. 30 En un intento por escapar del barco, los marineros comenzaron a bajar el bote salvavidas al mar, con el pretexto de que iban a echar algunas anclas desde la proa. 31 Pero Pablo advirtió al centurión y a los soldados: «Si esos no se quedan en el barco, no podrán salvarse ustedes». 32 Así que los soldados cortaron las amarras del bote salvavidas y lo dejaron caer al agua.

33 Estaba a punto de amanecer cuando Pablo animó a todos a tomar alimento: «Hoy hace ya catorce días que ustedes están con la vida en un hilo y siguen sin probar bocado. 34 Les ruego que coman algo, pues lo necesitan para sobrevivir. Ninguno de ustedes perderá ni un solo cabello de la cabeza». 35 Dicho esto, tomó pan y dio gracias a Dios delante de todos. Luego lo partió y comenzó a comer. 36 Todos se animaron y también comieron. 37 Éramos en total doscientas setenta y seis personas en el barco. 38 Una vez satisfechos, aligeraron el barco echando el trigo al mar.

39 Cuando amaneció, no reconocieron la tierra, pero vieron una bahía que tenía playa, donde decidieron encallar el barco a como diera lugar. 40 Cortaron las anclas y las dejaron caer en el mar, desatando a la vez las amarras de los timones. Luego izaron a favor del viento la vela de proa y se dirigieron a la playa. 41 Pero el barco fue a dar en un banco de arena y encalló. La proa se encajó en el fondo y quedó varada, mientras la popa se hacía pedazos al embate de las olas.

42 Los soldados pensaron matar a los presos para que ninguno escapara a nado. 43 Pero el centurión quería salvarle la vida a Pablo y les impidió llevar a cabo el plan. Dio orden de que los que pudieran nadar saltaran primero por la borda para llegar a tierra, 44 y de que los demás salieran valiéndose de tablas o de restos del barco. De esta manera todos llegamos sanos y salvos a tierra.

27 Nang ipasiya na kami ay maglalayag na patungong Italia, si Pablo at ang ibang mga bilanggo ay ibinigay sa isang kapitan. Ang pangalan ng senturyon ay Julio, mula sa balangay ng Emperador Augusto.

2 Sumakay kami sa isang barko na mula sa Adrameto. Ito ay maglalayag na sa mga dakong nasa Asya. Kasama namin si Aristarco na isang taga-Macedonia mula sa Tesalonica.

3 Nang sumunod na araw, dumaong kami sa Sidon. Si Julio ay nagpakita ng kagandahang-loob kay Pablo. Pinahintulutan niya siyang pumunta sa kaniyang mga kaibigan upang matanggap niya ang kanilang pagmamalasakit. 4 Nang kami ay maglayag muli buhat doon, naglayag kaming nanganganlong sa Chipre sapagkat pasalungat ang hangin. 5 Nang matawid na namin ang dagat na nasa tapat ng Cilicia at Pamfilia, dumating kami sa Mira ng Licia. 6 Doon ay nasumpungan ng kapitan ang isang barko na mula sa Alexandria. Ito ay maglalayag patungong Italia. Inilulan niya kami roon. 7 Maraming araw kaming naglayag na marahan at may kahirapan naming narating ang tapat ng Cinido. Hindi kami tinulutan ng hangin na makasulong pa kaya naglayag kami na nanganganlong sa Creta. Ito ay nasa tapat ng Salmonte. 8 Sa pamamaybay namin dito, may kahirapan kaming nakarating sa isang dakong tinatawag na Mabuting Daungan. Malapit doon ang lungsod ng Lasea.

9 Nang makalipas ang mahabang panahon, ang paglalayag ay nagiging mapanganib na. At dahil ang pag-aayuno ay nakalampas na, pinayuhan sila ni Pablo. 10 Sinabi sa kanila: Mga ginoo, nakikinita kong ang paglalayag na ito ay makaka­pinsala at magiging malaking kawalan. Hindi lamang sa lulan at sa barko kundi sa atin ding mga buhay. 11 Ngunit higitna pinaniwalaan ng kapitan ang taga-ugit at ang may-aring barko kaysa sa mga sinabi ni Pablo. 12 Sa dahilang hindi mabuting hintuan sa tag-ulan ang daungan, ipinayo ng nakakarami na maglayag na mula roon. Nagbabaka-sakali silang sa anumang paraan ay makarating sila sa Fenix. Doon nila gugugulin ang tag-ulan. At iyon ay daungan ng Cretana nakaharap sa dakong timugang-kanluran at hilagang-kanluran.

13 Nang marahang umihip ang hanging timugan, inakala nilang maisasagawa nila ang kanilang hangarin. Itinaas nila ang angkla at namaybay sa baybayin ng Creta.

14 Ngunit hindi nagtagal, humampas doon ang malakas na hangin na tinatawag na Euroclidon. 15 Nang hinampas ng hangin ang barko at hindi makasalungat sa hangin, nagpadala na lang kami sa hangin. 16 Kami ay nagkubli sa isang maliit na pulo na tinatawagna Clauda. At nahirapan kami na isampa ang bangkang-pangkagipitan. 17 Nang maisampa na ito, guma­mit sila ng mga pantulong. Tinalian nila ang ibaba ng barko. At sa takot na baka masadsad sa look ng Sirte, ibinaba nila ang mga layag at sa gayon ay nagpaanod sila. 18 Ngunit patuloy kaming hinahampas at ipinapadpad ng lubhang malakas na hangin sa magkabila. Kinabukasan, nagsimula na silang magtapon ng kanilang lulan sa dagat. 19 Nang ikatlong araw, itinapon ng aming mga kamay ang mga kagamitan ng barko. 20 At maraming araw na hindi namin nakita ang araw ni ang mga bituin man. Napakalakas na bagyo ang dumaan sa amin kaya nawalan na kami ng pag-asa na makakaligtas pa.

21 Nang matagal na silang hindi kumain, tumayo nga si Pablo sa kanilang kalagitnaan. Sinabi niya: Mga ginoo, nakinig sana kayo sa akin at hindi tayo naglayag muli sa Creta. Kung nakinig sana kayo, hindi natin nakamtan ang kapinsalaan at ang kawalang ito. 22 Ngayon, ipinapayo ko sa inyo na lakasan ninyo ang inyong loob sapagkat walang buhay na mapapa­hamak sa inyo kundi ang barko lamang. 23 Ito ay sapagkat ngayong gabi tumayo sa tabi ko ang isang anghel mula sa Diyos na nagmamay-ari sa akin at siyang aking pinaglilingkuran. 24 Sinabi niya: Pablo, huwag kang matakot. Kinakailangang humarap ka kay Cesar. Narito, ipinagkaloob sa iyo ng Diyos ang lahat ng kasama mo sa paglalayag. 25 Kaya nga, mga ginoo lakasan ninyo ang inyong loob sapagkat sumasampalataya ako sa Diyos at mangyayari ang ayon sa sinalita sa akin. 26 Ngunit kailangang tayo ay mapasadsad sa isang pulo.

Nawasak ang Barko

27 Nang sumapit ang ikalabing-apat na gabi, ipinadpad kami ng hangin paroo’t parito sa Adriatico. Nang maghahating gabi na, inakala ng mga magdaragat na nalalapit na sila sa isang lupain.

28 Tinarok nila at nasumpungang may dala­wampung dipa ang lalim. Nang makalayo sila ng kaunti, muli nilang tinarok at nasumpungang may labinlimang dipa ang lalim. 29 Sa takot nilang mapasadsad sa batuhan, naghulog sila ng apat na angkla sa hulihan. Hinahangad nila na mag-umaga na sana. 30 Ngunit nagpupumilit ang mga magdaragat na makatakas sa barko. Nagpakunyari sila na ihuhulog nila ang mga angkla sa unahan. 31 Sinabi ni Pablo sa kapitan at sa mga kawal: Maliban na manatili ang mga ito sa barko, kayo ay hindi makakaligtas. 32 Kaya pinutol ng mga kawal ang mga lubid ng bangkang-pangkagipitan at pinabayaan itong mahulog.

33 Nang mag-uumaga na, ipinamanhik ni Pablo sa lahat na kumain. Sinabi niya: Ngayon ay ikalabing-apat na araw na kayo ay naghihintay. Hindi kayo kumakain at walang tina­tanggap na anuman. 34 Kaya nga, ipinamamanhik ko sa inyo na kayo ay kumain dahil ito ay makakatulong na makalagpas kayo sa sakunang ito. Ito ay sapagkat isa mang buhok ay hindi malalagas mula sa ulo ng sinuman sa inyo. 35 Nang masabi na niya ang mga bagay na ito, kumuha siya ng tinapay. Nagpasalamat siya sa Diyos sa harapan ng lahat. Pinagputul-putol niya ito at nagsimulang kumain. 36 Nang magkagayon, lumakas ang loob ng lahat. Sila namang lahat ay kumuha din ng pagkain. 37 Kaming lahat na nasa barko ay dalawang daan at pitumpu’t anim na kaluluwa. 38 Nang mabusog na sila, pinagaan nila ang barko. Itinapon nila sa dagat ang trigo.

39 Kinabukasan, hindi nila makilala ang lupain. Ngunit nabanaagan nila ang isang look ng dagat na may baybayin. Sila ay nag-usap kung maaari nilang maisadsad ang barko mula doon. 40 Pinutol nila ang lubid ng angkla at pinabayaan nila sa dagat. Kasabay nito ay kinakalag nila ang mga tali ng mga timon. Pagkataas ng layag sa unahan ay tinungo nila ang pampang paayon sa ihip ng hangin. 41 Ngunit pagdating sa isang dako na pinagsasalubungan ng dalawang dagat, isinadsad nila ang unahan ng barko. Ito ay tumigil at hindi na kumikilos. Ngunit nagpasimulang mawasak ang hulihan dahil sa kalakasan ng mga alon.

42 Ang balak ng mga kawal ay pagpapatayin ang mga bilanggo. Paul Is Taken to Rome

27 When it was time for us to sail to Rome, Captain Julius from the Emperor's special troops was put in charge of Paul and the other prisoners. 2 We went aboard a ship from Adramyttium that was about to sail to some ports along the coast of Asia. Aristarchus from Thessalonica in Macedonia sailed on the ship with us.

3 The next day we came to shore at Sidon. Captain Julius was very kind to Paul. He even let him visit his friends, so they could give him whatever he needed. 4 When we left Sidon, the winds were blowing against us, and we sailed close to the island of Cyprus to be safe from the wind. 5 Then we sailed south of Cilicia and Pamphylia until we came to the port of Myra in Lycia. 6 There the army captain found a ship from Alexandria that was going to Italy. So he ordered us to board that ship.

7 We sailed along slowly for several days and had a hard time reaching Cnidus. The wind would not let us go any farther in that direction, so we sailed past Cape Salmone, where the island of Crete would protect us from the wind. 8 We went slowly along the coast and finally reached a place called Fair Havens, not far from the town of Lasea.

9 By now we had already lost a lot of time, and sailing was no longer safe. In fact, even the Great Day of Forgiveness[a] was past. 10 Then Paul spoke to the crew of the ship, “Men, listen to me! If we sail now, our ship and its cargo will be badly damaged, and many lives will be lost.” 11 But Julius listened to the captain of the ship and its owner, rather than to Paul.

12 The harbor at Fair Havens wasn't a good place to spend the winter. Because of this, almost everyone agreed that we should at least try to sail along the coast of Crete as far as Phoenix. It had a harbor that opened toward the southwest and northwest,[b] and we could spend the winter there.

The Storm at Sea

13 When a gentle wind from the south started blowing, the men thought it was a good time to do what they had planned. So they pulled up the anchor, and we sailed along the coast of Crete. 14 But soon a strong wind called “The Northeaster” blew against us from the island. 15 The wind struck the ship, and we could not sail against it. So we let the wind carry the ship.

16 We went along the island of Cauda on the side that was protected from the wind. We had a hard time holding the lifeboat in place, 17 but finally we got it where it belonged. Then the sailors wrapped ropes around the ship to hold it together. They lowered the sail and let the ship drift along, because they were afraid it might hit the sandbanks in the gulf of Syrtis.

18 The storm was so fierce that the next day they threw some of the ship's cargo overboard. 19 Then on the third day, with their bare hands they threw overboard some of the ship's gear. 20 For several days we could not see either the sun or the stars. A strong wind kept blowing, and we finally gave up all hope of being saved.

21 Since none of us had eaten anything for a long time, Paul stood up and told the men:

You should have listened to me! If you had stayed on in Crete, you would not have had this damage and loss. 22 But now I beg you to cheer up, because you will be safe. Only the ship will be lost.

23 I belong to God, and I worship him. Last night he sent an angel 24 to tell me, “Paul, don't be afraid! You will stand trial before the Emperor. And because of you, God will save the lives of everyone on the ship.” 25 Cheer up! I am sure that God will do exactly what he promised. 26 But we will first be shipwrecked on some island.

27 For 14 days and nights we had been blown around over the Mediterranean Sea. But about midnight the sailors realized we were getting near land. 28 They measured and found that the water was about 40 meters deep. A little later they measured again and found it was only about 30 meters. 29 The sailors were afraid that we might hit some rocks, and they let down four anchors from the back of the ship. Then they prayed for daylight.

30 The sailors wanted to escape from the ship. So they lowered the lifeboat into the water, pretending that they were letting down some anchors from the front of the ship. 31 But Paul said to Captain Julius and the soldiers, “If the sailors don't stay on the ship, you won't have any chance to save your lives.” 32 The soldiers then cut the ropes that held the lifeboat and let it fall into the sea.

33 Just before daylight Paul begged the people to eat something. He told them, “For 14 days you have been so worried that you haven't eaten a thing. 34 I beg you to eat something. Your lives depend on it. Do this and not one of you will be hurt.”

35 After Paul had said this, he took a piece of bread and gave thanks to God. Then in front of everyone, he broke the bread and ate some. 36 They all felt encouraged, and each of them ate something. 37 There were 276 people on the ship, 38 and after everyone had eaten, they threw the cargo of wheat into the sea to make the ship lighter.

The Shipwreck

39 Morning came, and the ship's crew saw a coast they did not recognize. But they did see a cove with a beach. So they decided to try to run the ship aground on the beach. 40 They cut the anchors loose and let them sink into the sea. At the same time they untied the ropes that were holding the rudders. Next, they raised the sail at the front of the ship and let the wind carry the ship toward the beach. 41 But it ran aground on a sandbank. The front of the ship stuck firmly in the sand, and the rear was being smashed by the force of the waves.

42 The soldiers decided to kill the prisoners to keep them from swimming away and escaping. 43 But Captain Julius wanted to save Paul's life, and he did not let the soldiers do what they had planned. Instead, he ordered everyone who could swim to jump into the water and head for shore. 44 Then he told the others to hold on to planks of wood or parts of the ship. At last, everyone safely reached shore.
