El proceso ante Festo
25 Tres días después de llegar a la provincia, Festo subió de Cesarea a Jerusalén. 2 Entonces los jefes de los sacerdotes y los dirigentes de los judíos presentaron sus acusaciones contra Pablo. 3 Insistentemente, pidieron a Festo que hiciera el favor de trasladar a Pablo a Jerusalén. Lo cierto es que ellos estaban preparando una emboscada para matarlo en el camino. 4 Festo respondió: «Pablo está preso en Cesarea y yo mismo partiré en breve para allá. 5 Que vayan conmigo algunos de los dirigentes de ustedes y formulen allí sus acusaciones contra él, si es que ha hecho algo malo».
6 Después de pasar entre los judíos unos ocho o diez días, Festo bajó a Cesarea y al día siguiente convocó al tribunal y mandó que trajeran a Pablo. 7 Cuando este se presentó, los judíos que habían bajado de Jerusalén lo rodearon, formulando contra él muchas acusaciones graves que no podían probar.
8 Pablo se defendía:
—No he cometido ninguna falta ni contra la Ley de los judíos ni contra el Templo ni contra el césar.
9 Pero Festo, queriendo congraciarse con los judíos, le preguntó:
—¿Estás dispuesto a subir a Jerusalén para ser juzgado allí ante mí?
10 Pablo contestó:
—Ya estoy ante el tribunal del césar, que es donde se me debe juzgar. No he agraviado a los judíos, como usted sabe muy bien. 11 Si soy culpable de haber hecho algo que merezca la muerte, no me niego a morir. Pero si no son ciertas las acusaciones que estos judíos formulan contra mí, nadie tiene el derecho de entregarme a ellos para complacerlos. ¡Apelo al césar!
12 Después de consultar con sus asesores, Festo declaró:
—Has apelado al césar. ¡Al césar irás!

13 Pasados algunos días, el rey Agripa y Berenice llegaron a Cesarea para saludar a Festo. 14 Como se entretuvieron allí varios días, Festo presentó al rey el caso de Pablo.
—Hay aquí un hombre —le dijo—, que Félix dejó preso. 15 Cuando fui a Jerusalén, los jefes de los sacerdotes y los líderes religiosos de los judíos presentaron acusaciones contra él y exigieron que se le condenara. 16 Les respondí que no es costumbre de los romanos entregar a ninguna persona sin antes concederle al acusado un careo con sus acusadores, y darle la oportunidad de defenderse de los cargos. 17 Cuando acudieron a mí, no dilaté el caso, sino que convoqué al tribunal el día siguiente y mandé traer a este hombre. 18 Al levantarse para hablar, sus acusadores no alegaron en su contra ninguno de los delitos que yo había supuesto. 19 Más bien, tenían contra él algunas cuestiones tocantes a su propia religión y sobre un tal Jesús, ya muerto, que Pablo sostiene que está vivo. 20 Yo no sabía cómo investigar tales cuestiones, así que le pregunté si estaba dispuesto a ir a Jerusalén para ser juzgado allí con respecto a esos cargos. 21 Pero como Pablo apeló para que se le reservara el fallo al emperador, ordené que quedara detenido hasta ser remitido al césar.
22 —A mí también me gustaría oír a ese hombre —dijo Agripa a Festo.
—Pues mañana mismo lo oirá usted —contestó Festo.

23 Al día siguiente Agripa y Berenice se presentaron con gran pompa, y entraron en la sala de la audiencia acompañados por oficiales de alto rango y por las personalidades más distinguidas de la ciudad. Festo mandó que trajeran a Pablo 24 y dijo:
—Rey Agripa y todos los presentes: Aquí tienen a este hombre. Todo el pueblo judío me ha presentado una demanda contra él, tanto en Jerusalén como aquí en Cesarea, pidiendo a gritos su muerte. 25 He llegado a la conclusión de que él no ha hecho nada que merezca la muerte, pero como apeló al emperador, he decidido enviarlo a Roma. 26 El problema es que no tengo definido nada que escribir al soberano acerca de él. Por eso lo he hecho comparecer ante ustedes, y especialmente delante de usted, rey Agripa, para que, como resultado de esta investigación, tenga yo algunos datos para mi carta; 27 me parece absurdo enviar un preso sin especificar los cargos contra él.

25 Now when Festus was come into the province, after three days he ascended from Caesarea to Jerusalem.
2 Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews informed him against Paul, and besought him,
3 And desired favour against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him.
4 But Festus answered, that Paul should be kept at Caesarea, and that he himself would depart shortly thither.
5 Let them therefore, said he, which among you are able, go down with me, and accuse this man, if there be any wickedness in him.
6 And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Caesarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment seat commanded Paul to be brought.
7 And when he was come, the Jews which came down from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not prove.
8 While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Caesar, have I offended any thing at all.
9 But Festus, willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said, Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me?
10 Then said Paul, I stand at Caesar's judgment seat, where I ought to be judged: to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest.
11 For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Caesar.
12 Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Caesar? unto Caesar shalt thou go.
13 And after certain days king Agrippa and Bernice came unto Caesarea to salute Festus.
14 And when they had been there many days, Festus declared Paul's cause unto the king, saying, There is a certain man left in bonds by Felix:
15 About whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me, desiring to have judgment against him.
16 To whom I answered, It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face, and have licence to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him.
17 Therefore, when they were come hither, without any delay on the morrow I sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth.
18 Against whom when the accusers stood up, they brought none accusation of such things as I supposed:
19 But had certain questions against him of their own superstition, and of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.
20 And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters.
21 But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Caesar.
22 Then Agrippa said unto Festus, I would also hear the man myself. To morrow, said he, thou shalt hear him.
23 And on the morrow, when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at Festus' commandment Paul was brought forth.
24 And Festus said, King Agrippa, and all men which are here present with us, ye see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews have dealt with me, both at Jerusalem, and also here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.
25 But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself hath appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him.
26 Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. Wherefore I have brought him forth before you, and specially before thee, O king Agrippa, that, after examination had, I might have somewhat to write.
27 For it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner, and not withal to signify the crimes laid against him.

25 Ngayon, nang makapasok na si Festo sa lalawigan, pagkaraan ng tatlong araw, umahon siya sa Jerusalem mula sa Cesarea.
2 Ang pinakapunong-saserdote at ang pangulo ng mga Judio ay nagbigay-alam sa kaniya laban kay Pablo. Namanhik sila sa kaniya. 3 Hiniling nila na pagbigyan sila na siya ay ipahatid sa Jerusalem. Binalak nilang tambangan siya upang patayin habang siya ay nasa daan. 4 Gayunman, sumagot si Festo na si Pablo ay pananatilihin sa Cesarea. Siya man ay patungo na roon sa madaling panahon. 5 Kaya nga, sinabi niya: Ang mga may kapangyarihan nga sa inyo ay sumamang lumusong sa akin. Kung may anumang pagkakasala ang lalaking ito, isakdal nila siya.
6 Nang siya ay makapanatili na sa kanilang lugar nang mahigit sa sampung araw, lumusong siya sa Cesarea. Kinabukasan, lumuklok siya sa hukuman at iniutos na dalhin si Pablo. 7 Nang dumating siya, pinaligiran siya ng mga Judio na lumusong mula sa Jerusalem. May dala silang marami at mabibigat na paratang laban kay Pablo na pawang hindi nila kayang patunayan.
8 At sinasabi ni Pablo, bilang pagtatanggol: Laban man sa kautusan ng mga Judio, ni laban man sa templo, ni laban man kay Cesar ay hindi ako magkakasala.
9 Ngunit si Festo, dahil ibig niyang kalugdan siya ng mga Judio, ay sumagot kay Pablo at nagsabi: Ibig mo bang umahon sa Jerusalem at doon ka hatulan sa mga bagay na ito sa harapan ko?
10 Nang magkagayon, sinabi ni Pablo: Nakatayo ako sa harapan ng hukuman ni Cesar na dito ako dapat hatulan. Wala akong ginawang anumang kamalian sa mga Judio, iyan ay alam ninyo. 11 Ito ay sapagkat kung nakagawa ako ng anumang kamalian at anumang bagay na nararapat sa kamatayan, hindi ako umiiwas na mamatay. Ngunit kung walang katotohanan ang mga bagay na ipinaparatang nila sa akin, walang may kapangyarihang maibigay ako sa kanila. Ako ay aapela kay Cesar.
12 Nang magkagayon, si Festo, nang nakapagsangguni na sa mga tagapayo ay sumagot: Umapela ka kay Cesar, kaya kay Cesar ka pupunta.

13 Pagkaraan ng ilang araw, si Agripa na hari at si Bernice ay lumusong sa Cesarea. Bumati sila kay Festo.
14 Nang makapanatili na sila roon ng maraming araw, isinaysay ni Festo sa hari ang usapin ni Pablo. Sinabi niya: May isang lalaking bilanggo na iniwan si Felix. 15 Nang ako ay nasa Jerusalem, ang mga pinunong-saserdote at ang mga matanda sa mga Judio ay nagbigay-alam sa akin patungkol sa kaniya. Hinihiling nilang humatol ako ng laban sa kaniya.
16 Sumagot ako sa kanila: Hindi kaugalian ng mga taga-Roma na ibigay ang sinumang tao sa kapahamakan hanggang sa hindi nahaharap ang isinasakdal sa mga nagsasakdal. Siya ay bibigyan ng pagkakataong makapagtanggol sa kaniyang sarili patungkol sa paratang. 17 Nang sila nga ay nagkatipon dito, hindi ako nagpaliban. Kundi nang sumunod na araw ay lumuklok ako sa hukuman at iniutos kong dalhin ang lalaki. 18 Nang tumindig ang mga nagsakdal sa kaniya ay walang anumang paratang na maiharap laban sa kaniya gaya ng aking inaakala. 19 Ngunit may ilang mga katanungan laban sa kaniya. Ito ay patungkol sa kanilang sariling relihiyon at patungkol sa isang Jesus na namatay. Pinagtibay ni Pablo na siya ay buhay. 20 Naguguluhan ako patungkol sa mga ganitong uri ng katanungan. Kaya tinanong ko siya kung ibig niyang pumaroon sa Jerusalem at doon siya hatulan patungkol sa mga bagay na ito. 21 Ngunit si Pablo ay umapela na ingatan siya upang pakinggan ng Emperador Augusto. Kaya ipinag-utos ko na ingatan siya hanggang sa siya ay maipadala ko kay Cesar.
22 At sinabi ni Agrippa kay Festo: Ibig kong ako mismo ang makarinig sa lalaking iyon.
At sinabi niya: Bukas, mapapakinggan mo siya.

23 Kinabukasan, dumating si Agripa at Bernice taglay ang malaking pagdiriwang. Sila ay pumasok sa bulwagang, kasama ang mga pinunong-kapitan. Kasama rin ang mga taong kilala sa lungsod. At iniutos ni Festo na ipasok si Pablo.
24 Sinabi ni Festo: Haring Agripa, at lahat ng mga lalaking nariritong kasama namin. Nakikita ninyo ang lalaking ito na isinakdal sa akin maging sa Jerusalem at maging dito man ng buong karamihan ng mga Judio. Isinisigaw nilang hindi na karapat-dapat na siya ay mabuhay pa. 25 Ngunit nasumpungan kong siya ay walang ginawang anumang nararapat sa kamatayan. Sa dahilang siya rin ay umapela kay Augusto, ipinasiya kong siya ay ipadala. 26 Wala akong tiyak na bagay na maisusulat patungkol sa kaniya sa aking panginoon. Kaya dinala ko siya sa harapan ninyo at lalo na sa harapan mo, Haring Agripa. Sa ganoon, kapag natapos na ang pagsiyasat, magkakaroon ako ng bagay na maisusulat. 27 Ito ay sapagkat sa aking palagay ay hindi makatwiran na magpadala ng isang bilanggo na hindi sinasabi ang paratang laban sa kaniya.
