22 — Hermanos israelitas y dirigentes de nuestra nación, escuchen lo que ahora voy a alegar ante ustedes en mi defensa.
2 Al oír que se expresaba en arameo, prestaron más atención.
3 — Soy judío —afirmó Pablo—; nací en Tarso de Cilicia, pero me he educado en esta ciudad. Mi maestro fue Gamaliel, quien me instruyó con esmero en la ley de nuestros antepasados. Siempre he mostrado un celo ardiente por Dios, igual que ustedes hoy. 4 He perseguido a muerte a los seguidores de este nuevo camino del Señor, apresando y metiendo en la cárcel a hombres y mujeres. 5 De ello pueden dar testimonio el sumo sacerdote y todo el Consejo de Ancianos, pues de ellos recibí cartas para nuestros correligionarios judíos de Damasco, adonde me dirigía con el propósito de apresar a los creyentes que allí hubiera y traerlos encadenados a Jerusalén para ser castigados.
Pablo relata su vocación
6 Iba, pues, de camino cuando, cerca ya de Damasco, hacia el mediodía, me envolvió de repente una luz deslumbrante que procedía del cielo. 7 Caí al suelo y escuché una voz, que me decía: “Saúl, Saúl, ¿por qué me persigues?”. 8 “¿Quién eres, Señor?”, —pregunté—. “Soy Jesús de Nazaret, a quien tú persigues”, —me contestó—. 9 Mis acompañantes vieron la luz, pero no oyeron la voz del que me hablaba. 10 Yo pregunté: “¿Qué debo hacer, Señor?”. El Señor me dijo: “Levántate y vete a Damasco. Allí te dirán lo que se te ha encargado realizar”. 11 Como el fulgor de aquella luz me había dejado ciego, mis acompañantes me condujeron de la mano hasta Damasco.
12 Había allí un hombre llamado Ananías, fiel cumplidor de la ley y muy estimado por todos los residentes judíos. 13 Este vino a mi encuentro y, poniéndose a mi lado, me dijo: “Hermano Saúl, recobra la vista”. Al instante recobré la vista y pude verlo. 14 Ananías, por su parte, añadió: “El Dios de nuestros antepasados te ha escogido para manifestarte su voluntad, para que vieras al Justo y oyeras su propia voz. 15 Porque debes ser su testigo ante todos de cuanto has oído y presenciado. 16 No pierdas tiempo ahora; anda, bautízate y libérate de tus pecados invocando el nombre del Señor”.
17 A mi regreso a Jerusalén, un día en que estaba orando en el Templo tuve un éxtasis. 18 Vi al Señor, que me decía: “Date prisa. Sal en seguida de Jerusalén, pues no van a aceptar tu testimonio sobre mí”. 19 “Señor —respondí—, ellos saben que yo soy el que iba por las sinagogas para encarcelar y torturar a tus creyentes. 20 Incluso cuando mataron a Esteban, tu testigo, allí estaba yo presente aprobando el proceder y cuidando la ropa de quienes lo mataban”. 21 Pero el Señor me contestó: “Ponte en camino, pues voy a enviarte a las más remotas naciones”.
Pablo y el comandante romano
22 Hasta aquí todos habían escuchado con atención; pero en ese momento comenzaron a gritar:
— ¡Fuera con él! ¡No merece vivir!
23 Como no dejaban de vociferar, de agitar sus mantos y de arrojar polvo al aire, 24 el comandante mandó que metieran a Pablo en la fortaleza y lo azotasen, a ver si confesaba y de esa forma era posible averiguar la razón del griterío contra él. 25 Pero cuando lo estaban amarrando con las correas, Pablo dijo al oficial allí presente:
— ¿Tienen ustedes derecho a azotar a un ciudadano romano sin juzgarlo previamente?
26 Al oír esto, el oficial fue a informar al comandante:
— Cuidado con lo que vas a hacer; ese hombre es ciudadano romano.
27 El comandante llegó junto a Pablo y le preguntó:
— Dime, ¿eres tú ciudadano romano?
— Sí —contestó Pablo—.
28 — A mí me ha costado una fortuna adquirir esa ciudadanía —afirmó el comandante—.
— Pues yo la tengo por nacimiento —contestó Pablo—.
29 Al momento se apartaron de él los que iban a someterlo a tortura, y el propio comandante tuvo miedo al saber que había mandado encadenar a un ciudadano romano.
Pablo ante el Consejo Supremo
30 El comandante se propuso saber con certeza cuáles eran los cargos que presentaban los judíos contra Pablo. Así que al día siguiente mandó que lo desatasen y dio orden de convocar a los jefes de los sacerdotes y al Consejo Supremo ante los que hizo comparecer a Pablo.

Paul’s Defense at Jerusalem
22 “Brethren(A) and fathers, hear my defense before you now.” 2 And when they heard that he spoke to them in the (B)Hebrew language, they kept all the more silent.
Then he said: 3 (C)“I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city (D)at the feet of (E)Gamaliel, taught (F)according to the strictness of our fathers’ law, and (G)was zealous toward God (H)as you all are today. 4 (I)I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women, 5 as also the high priest bears me witness, and (J)all the council of the elders, (K)from whom I also received letters to the brethren, and went to Damascus (L)to bring in chains even those who were there to Jerusalem to be punished.
6 “Now (M)it happened, as I journeyed and came near Damascus at about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone around me. 7 And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’ 8 So I answered, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.’
9 “And (N)those who were with me indeed saw the light [a]and were afraid, but they did not hear the voice of Him who spoke to me. 10 So I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ And the Lord said to me, ‘Arise and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all things which are appointed for you to do.’ 11 And since I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.
12 “Then (O)a certain Ananias, a devout man according to the law, (P)having a good testimony with all the (Q)Jews who dwelt there, 13 came to me; and he stood and said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight.’ And at that same hour I looked up at him. 14 Then he said, (R)‘The God of our fathers (S)has chosen you that you should (T)know His will, and (U)see the Just One, (V)and hear the voice of His mouth. 15 (W)For you will be His witness to all men of (X)what you have seen and heard. 16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, (Y)and wash away your sins, (Z)calling on the name of the Lord.’
17 “Now (AA)it happened, when I returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, that I was in a trance 18 and (AB)saw Him saying to me, (AC)‘Make haste and get out of Jerusalem quickly, for they will not receive your testimony concerning Me.’ 19 So I said, ‘Lord, (AD)they know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and (AE)beat those who believe on You. 20 (AF)And when the blood of Your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by (AG)consenting [b]to his death, and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.’ 21 Then He said to me, ‘Depart, (AH)for I will send you far from here to the Gentiles.’ ”

22 And they listened to him until this word, and then they raised their voices and said, (AI)“Away with such a fellow from the earth, for (AJ)he is not fit to live!” 23 Then, as they cried out and [c]tore off their clothes and threw dust into the air, 24 the commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks, and said that he should be examined under scourging, so that he might know why they shouted so against him. 25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood by, (AK)“Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned?”
26 When the centurion heard that, he went and told the commander, saying, “Take care what you do, for this man is a Roman.”
27 Then the commander came and said to him, “Tell me, are you a Roman?”
He said, “Yes.”
28 The commander answered, “With a large sum I obtained this citizenship.”
And Paul said, “But I was born a citizen.”
29 Then immediately those who were about to examine him withdrew from him; and the commander was also afraid after he found out that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
The Sanhedrin Divided
30 The next day, because he wanted to know for certain why he was accused by the Jews, he released him from his bonds, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down and set him before them.

22 Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.
2 (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)
3 I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.
4 And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.
5 As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.
6 And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.
7 And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
8 And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.
9 And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.
10 And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.
11 And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.
12 And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,
13 Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.
14 And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.
15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.
16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
17 And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;
18 And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
19 And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:
20 And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.
21 And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.
22 And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.
23 And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,
24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.
25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
26 When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.
27 Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.
28 And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.
29 Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
30 On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
