Pablo y Silas en Tesalónica
17 Después de pasar por Anfípolis y Apolonia, Pablo y Silas llegaron a Tesalónica(A), donde había una sinagoga de los judíos. 2 Y Pablo, entró según su costumbre(B), y por tres días de reposo[a](C) discutió con ellos basándose en las Escrituras(D), 3 explicando[b] y presentando[c] evidencia de que era necesario que el Cristo[d] padeciera(E) y resucitara de entre los muertos(F), y diciendo: «Este Jesús, a quien yo les anuncio, es el Cristo(G)». 4 Algunos de ellos creyeron, y se unieron(H) a Pablo y a Silas(I), junto con[e] una gran multitud de griegos(J) temerosos de Dios(K) y muchas[f] de las mujeres principales(L).
5 Pero los judíos, llenos de envidia, llevaron[g] algunos hombres malvados[h] de la plaza pública, organizaron una turba y alborotaron la ciudad(M). Asaltando la casa de Jasón(N), procuraban sacarlos al pueblo. 6 Al no encontrarlos, arrastraron a Jasón y a algunos de los hermanos ante las autoridades de la ciudad, gritando: «Esos que han trastornado al mundo(O) han venido acá también(P); 7 y Jasón los[i] ha recibido(Q). 10 Enseguida los hermanos(T) enviaron de noche a Pablo y a Silas(U) a Berea(V), los cuales, al llegar, fueron a la sinagoga de los judíos(W). 11 Estos eran más nobles que los de Tesalónica(X), pues[j] recibieron la palabra con toda solicitud, escudriñando diariamente las Escrituras, para ver si estas cosas eran así. 12 Por eso muchos de ellos creyeron(Y), así como también un buen número de[k] griegos, hombres y mujeres(Z) de distinción(AA).
13 Pero cuando los judíos de Tesalónica(AB) supieron que la palabra de Dios había sido proclamada por Pablo también en Berea(AC), fueron también allá para agitar y alborotar a las multitudes. 14 Entonces los hermanos(AD) inmediatamente enviaron a Pablo para que fuera hasta el mar; pero Silas(AE) y Timoteo(AF) se quedaron allí. 15 Los que conducían a Pablo(AG) lo llevaron hasta Atenas(AH); y después de recibir órdenes de que Silas y Timoteo(AI) se unieran[l] a él(AJ) lo más pronto posible, se fueron.

16 Mientras Pablo los esperaba en Atenas(AK), su espíritu se enardecía dentro de él al contemplar la ciudad llena de ídolos. 17 Así que discutía en la sinagoga(AL) con los judíos y con los gentiles temerosos de Dios(AM), y diariamente en la plaza con los que estuvieran presentes.
18 También discutían con él algunos de los filósofos epicúreos y estoicos. Y algunos decían: «¿Qué quiere decir este palabrero[m](AN)?». «Parece ser un predicador de divinidades extrañas[n]», decían otros; porque les predicaba a[o] Jesús y la resurrección(AO).
19 Entonces tomaron a Pablo(AP) y lo llevaron al[p] Areópago[q](AQ), diciendo: «¿Podemos saber qué es esta nueva enseñanza(AR) que usted proclama[r]? 20 Porque le oímos decir[s] cosas extrañas; por tanto, queremos saber qué significan». 21 Pues todos los atenienses y los extranjeros de visita allí(AS), no pasaban el tiempo en otra cosa sino en decir o en oír algo nuevo.
22 Entonces Pablo poniéndose en pie en medio del Areópago[t], dijo: «Varones atenienses(AT), percibo que ustedes son muy religiosos[u](AU) en todo sentido. 23 Porque mientras pasaba y observaba los objetos de su adoración(AV), hallé también un altar con esta inscripción: “AL[v] DIOS DESCONOCIDO”. Pues lo que ustedes adoran sin conocer(AW), eso les anuncio yo.
24 »El Dios que hizo el mundo y todo lo que en él hay(AX), puesto que es Señor del cielo y de la tierra(AY), no mora en templos hechos por manos de hombres(AZ), 25 ni es servido por manos humanas, como si necesitara de algo(BA), puesto que Él da a todos vida y aliento y todas las cosas.
26 »De uno solo, Dios hizo todas las naciones del mundo(BB) para que habitaran sobre toda la superficie de la tierra, habiendo determinado sus tiempos y las fronteras de los lugares donde viven(BC), 27 para que buscaran a Dios, y de alguna manera, palpando, lo hallen, aunque Él no está lejos de ninguno de nosotros(BD). 28 Porque en Él vivimos, nos movemos y existimos[w](BE), así como algunos de los poetas de ustedes han dicho: “Porque también nosotros somos linaje Suyo”.
29 »Siendo, pues, linaje de Dios, no debemos pensar que la Naturaleza Divina sea semejante a oro, plata o piedra, esculpidos por el[x] arte y el pensamiento humano(BF). 30 Por tanto, habiendo pasado por alto los tiempos de ignorancia(BG), Dios declara ahora a todos los hombres, en todas partes, que se arrepientan(BH). 31 Porque Él ha establecido un día en el cual juzgará(BI) al mundo(BJ) en justicia, por medio de un Hombre(BK) a quien Él ha designado(BL), habiendo presentado pruebas a todos los hombres cuando lo resucitó de entre los muertos(BM)».
32 Cuando oyeron de la resurrección de los muertos(BN), algunos se burlaban, pero otros dijeron: «Le escucharemos otra[y] vez acerca de esto». 33 Entonces Pablo salió de entre ellos. 34 Pero algunos se unieron a él y creyeron, entre los cuales estaban[z] Dionisio el areopagita(BO), una mujer llamada Dámaris y otros con ellos.

GOD’S WORD Translation
Paul and Silas in Thessalonica
17 Paul and Silas traveled through the cities of Amphipolis and Apollonia and came to the city of Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue. 2 As usual, Paul went into the synagogue. On three consecutive days of rest—holy days, he had discussions about Scripture with the synagogue members. 3 He explained and showed them that the Messiah had to suffer, die, and come back to life, and that Jesus, the person he talked about, was this Messiah.
4 Some of the Jews were persuaded to join Paul and Silas, especially a large group of Greeks who had converted to Judaism and the wives of many prominent men.
5 Then the Jews became jealous. They took some low-class characters who hung around the public square, formed a mob, and started a riot in the city. They attacked Jason’s home and searched it for Paul and Silas in order to bring them out to the crowd. 6 When they didn’t find Paul and Silas, they dragged Jason and some other believers in front of the city officials. They shouted, “Those men who have made trouble all over the world are now here in Thessalonica, 7 and Jason has welcomed them as his guests. All of them oppose the emperor’s decrees by saying that there is another king, whose name is Jesus.”
8 The crowd and the officials were upset when they heard this. 9 But after they had made Jason and the others post bond, they let them go.
10 Immediately when night came, the believers sent Paul and Silas to the city of Berea.
Paul and Silas in Berea
When Paul and Silas arrived in the city of Berea, they entered the synagogue. 11 The people of Berea were more open-minded than the people of Thessalonica. They were very willing to receive God’s message, and every day they carefully examined the Scriptures to see if what Paul said was true. 12 Many of them became believers, and quite a number of them were prominent Greek men and women.
13 But when the Jews in Thessalonica found out that Paul was also spreading God’s word in Berea, they went there to upset and confuse the people. 14 The believers immediately sent Paul to the seacoast, but Silas and Timothy stayed in Berea.
Paul in Athens
15 The men who escorted Paul took him all the way to the city of Athens. When the men left Athens, they took instructions back to Silas and Timothy to join Paul as soon as possible.
16 While Paul was waiting for Silas and Timothy in Athens, he saw that the city had statues of false gods everywhere. This upset him. 17 He held discussions in the synagogue with Jews and converts to Judaism. He also held discussions every day in the public square with anyone who happened to be there. 18 Some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers had discussions with him. Some asked, “What is this babbling fool trying to say?” Others said, “He seems to be speaking about foreign gods.” The philosophers said these things because Paul was telling the Good News about Jesus and saying that people would come back to life.
19 Then they brought Paul to the city court, the Areopagus, and asked, “Could you tell us these new ideas that you’re teaching? 20 Some of the things you say sound strange to us. So we would like to know what they mean.”
21 Everyone who lived in Athens looked for opportunities to tell or hear something new and unusual.
22 Paul stood in the middle of the court and said, “Men of Athens, I see that you are very religious. 23 As I was going through your city and looking closely at the objects you worship, I noticed an altar with this written on it: ‘To an unknown god.’ I’m telling you about the unknown god you worship. 24 The God who made the universe and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth. He doesn’t live in shrines made by humans, 25 and he isn’t served by humans as if he needed anything. He gives everyone life, breath, and everything they have. 26 From one man he has made every nation of humanity to live all over the earth. He has given them the seasons of the year and the boundaries within which to live. 27 He has done this so that they would look for God, somehow reach for him, and find him. In fact, he is never far from any one of us. 28 Certainly, we live, move, and exist because of him. As some of your poets have said, ‘We are God’s children.’ 29 So if we are God’s children, we shouldn’t think that the divine being is like an image made from gold, silver, or stone, an image that is the product of human imagination and skill.
30 “God overlooked the times when people didn’t know any better. But now he commands everyone everywhere to turn to him and change the way they think and act. 31 He has set a day when he is going to judge the world with justice, and he will use a man he has appointed to do this. God has given proof to everyone that he will do this by bringing that man back to life.”
32 When the people of the court heard that a person had come back to life, some began joking about it, while others said, “We’ll hear you talk about this some other time.”
33 With this response, Paul left the court. 34 Some men joined him and became believers. With them were Dionysius, who was a member of the court, and a woman named Damaris, and some other people.

17 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:
2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,
3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.
4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.
5 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.
6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;
7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.
8 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.
9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.
10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.
11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.
13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.
14 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.
15 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.
16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.
17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.
18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.
19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?
20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.
21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)
22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.
24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.
30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

17 Därefter tog Paulus och Silas vägen genom städerna Amfipolis och Apollonia och kom till Thessalonike, där det fanns en judisk synagoga.
2 Paulus gick som vanligt dit för att samtala med människorna, och under tre sabbatsdagar i rad förmedlade han Skriftens ord till dem.
3 Han förklarade profetiorna om hur Messias måste lida och uppstå från de döda och bevisade att Jesus är Messias.

7 Och Jason har låtit dem komma in i sitt hem. Allihop är skyldiga till förräderi för de säger att de har en annan kung än kejsaren, en egen kung som heter Jesus.
8-9 Folket i staden, liksom domarna, blev mycket oroade av dessa rapporter och släppte dem inte fria förrän de hade fått borgen för dem.
Paulus i Beroia
10 Samma natt såg de kristna till att Paulus och Silas kom iväg till Beroia. Också där gick de till synagogan för att predika.
11 Människorna i Beroia var mer mottagliga för Guds ord än de i Thessalonike och de lyssnade med glädje till budskapet. De granskade skrifterna varje dag för att kontrollera det som Paulus och Silas predikade, och för att se om det verkligen var riktigt.
12 Resultatet blev att många av dem började tro, däribland flera välkända grekiska kvinnor och män.
13 Men när judarna i Thessalonike fick reda på att Paulus predikade i Beroia, kom de dit och ställde till oro bland folket.
14 De troende handlade snabbt och skickade Paulus vidare till kusten, medan Silas och Timotheos stannade kvar.
15 De som följde med Paulus fortsatte med honom till Athen. Sedan återvände de till Beroia med ett meddelande till Silas och Timotheos att de skulle skynda sig att komma efter.

16 Medan Paulus väntade på dem i Athen, blev han mer och mer upprörd över alla de avgudabilder han såg överallt i staden.
17 Han gick till synagogan, och där talade han till judarna och de gudfruktiga greker som fanns där, och varje dag talade han på torget till alla som råkade vara där.
18 Han träffade också några av de epikureiska och stoiska filosoferna. När han berättade för dem om Jesus och att han uppstått från de döda, reagerade de genom att ropa: Han pratar smörja, eller han försöker pracka på oss en främmande religion.
19 De tog honom med sig till Areopagen. Kom och berätta mer för oss om den här nya religionen, sa de,
20 för det är ganska märkliga saker du har att säga, och allt är nytt för oss.
21 Detta var egentligen inget ovanligt för alla athenare, så väl som alla utlänningar i Athen, tycks använda all sin tid till att diskutera de senaste idéerna på modet.
22 Paulus ställde sig alltså framför dem på Areopagen och sa: Athenare, jag har lagt märke till att ni är mycket religiösa,
23 för när jag har promenerat omkring här har jag sett många altaren. Ett av dem hade inskriften: 'Åt den okände guden'. Ni har bett till honom utan att veta vem han är, och nu vill jag berätta för er om honom.
24 Han skapade världen och allt som finns i den. Eftersom han är himlens och jordens Herre, bor han inte i något tempel som är byggt av människor.
25 Människor kan inte med händer tillfredsställa hans behov, för han har inga behov! Han ger liv och anda åt allt och fyller alla behov som finns.
26 Han skapade alla folk från en enda människa och spred ut dem över hela jordens yta. Han bestämde människornas tider och stakade ut deras gränser.
27 Hans syfte med allt detta var att de skulle söka Gud, och kanske hitta vägen till honom och finna honom. Han är nämligen inte långt borta från någon av oss.
28 För det är i honom vi lever och rör oss och existerar, alldeles som en av era egna poeter säger: 'Vi är Guds barn.'
29 Om detta är sant så bör vi inte tänka oss Gud som en bildstod, som människor tillverkat av silver eller guld eller huggit ut i sten.
30 Gud har haft överseende med människans tidigare okunnighet om detta, men nu vill han att alla ska lämna avgudarna och bara tillbe honom.
31 Han har nämligen bestämt en dag, då han rättvist ska döma världen genom den människa han har utvalt. Och han har bevisat detta genom att låta honom uppstå från de döda.
32 När de hörde Paulus tala om en person som hade varit död men uppstått skrattade några, men andra sa: Vi vill höra mer om det där en annan gång.
33 Det satte punkt för Paulus diskussion med dem,
34 men några förenade sig med honom och kom till tro. Bland dem var Dionysios, en medlem av stadens domstol, och en kvinna som hette Damaris och några till.
