El problema de los judaizantes
15 Algunos que llegaron de Judea enseñaban a los hermanos(A): «Si no se circuncidan(B) conforme al rito de Moisés(C), no pueden ser salvos(D)». 2 Como Pablo y Bernabé tuvieran gran[a] disensión y debate(E) con ellos, los hermanos determinaron[b] que Pablo y Bernabé, y algunos otros de ellos subieran a Jerusalén(F) a los apóstoles y a los ancianos(G) para tratar esta cuestión.
3 Así que, siendo enviados por la iglesia(H), pasaron por Fenicia(I) y Samaria, relatando detalladamente la conversión de los gentiles(J), y causaban gran gozo a todos los hermanos(K). 4 Cuando llegaron a Jerusalén, fueron recibidos por la iglesia, los apóstoles y los ancianos(L), e informaron de todo lo que Dios había hecho con ellos(M). 5 Pero algunos de la secta(N) de los fariseos(O) que habían creído se levantaron diciendo: «Es necesario circuncidarlos(P) y mandarles que guarden la ley de Moisés».
El concilio de Jerusalén
6 Entonces los apóstoles y los ancianos(Q) se reunieron para considerar[c] este asunto[d]. 7 Después de mucho debate(R), Pedro se levantó y les dijo: «Hermanos[e], ustedes saben que en los primeros días[f] Dios escogió de entre ustedes que por mi boca los gentiles oyeran la palabra del evangelio(S) y creyeran(T). 8 Dios, que conoce el corazón(U), les dio testimonio dándoles el Espíritu Santo, al igual que a nosotros(V); 9 y ninguna distinción hizo entre nosotros y ellos(W), purificando por la fe sus corazones(X).
10 »Ahora pues, ¿por qué tientan a Dios(Y) poniendo sobre el cuello de los discípulos un yugo que ni nuestros padres ni nosotros hemos podido llevar(Z)? 11 Creemos más bien que somos salvos por la gracia del Señor Jesús(AA), de la misma manera que ellos también lo son».
12 Toda la multitud hizo silencio, y escuchaban a Bernabé y a Pablo, que relataban las señales[g] y prodigios(AB) que Dios había hecho entre los gentiles por medio de ellos(AC). 13 Cuando terminaron de hablar, Jacobo[h](AD) tomó la palabra y dijo: «Escúchenme, hermanos. 14 Simón[i](AE) ha relatado cómo Dios al principio tuvo a bien[j] tomar de entre los gentiles un pueblo para Su nombre. 15 Y con esto concuerdan las palabras de los profetas(AF), tal como está escrito:
16 “(AG)Después de esto volveré(AH),
Y reedificaré el tabernáculo[k] de David que ha caído.
Y reedificaré sus ruinas,
Y lo levantaré de nuevo,
17 Para que el resto de los hombres busque al Señor(AI),
Y todos los gentiles[l] que son llamados por Mi nombre[m](AJ)”,
18 Dice el Señor(AK), que hace saber todo esto[n] desde tiempos antiguos(AL).
19 »Por tanto, yo opino que no debemos molestar(AM) a los que de entre los gentiles se convierten a Dios, 20 sino que les escribamos que se abstengan de cosas contaminadas[o] por los ídolos(AN), de fornicación, de lo estrangulado y de sangre(AO). 21 Porque Moisés desde generaciones antiguas tiene en cada ciudad quienes lo prediquen, pues todos los días de reposo es leído(AP) en las sinagogas».
La carta del concilio a los gentiles
22 Entonces pareció bien a los apóstoles y a los ancianos(AQ), con toda la iglesia, escoger de entre ellos algunos hombres para enviarlos a Antioquía(AR) con Pablo y Bernabé: a Judas, llamado Barsabás, y a Silas(AS), hombres prominentes entre los hermanos(AT), 23 y enviaron esta carta con ellos[p]:
«Los apóstoles, y los hermanos que son ancianos(AU), a los hermanos(AV) en Antioquía(AW), Siria(AX) y Cilicia(AY) que son de los gentiles, saludos(AZ).
24 Puesto que hemos oído que algunos de entre nosotros, a quienes no autorizamos, los han inquietado(BA) con sus palabras(BB), perturbando sus almas,
25 nos pareció bien(BC), habiendo llegado a un común acuerdo[q], escoger algunos hombres para enviarlos a ustedes con nuestros amados Bernabé y Pablo.
26 Estos hombres han arriesgado[r] su vida(BD) por el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
27 Por tanto, hemos enviado a Judas y a Silas(BE), quienes también les informarán las mismas cosas verbalmente[s].
28 Porque pareció bien(BF) al Espíritu Santo(BG) y a nosotros(BH) no imponerles mayor carga que estas cosas esenciales:
29 que se abstengan de lo que ha sido sacrificado a los ídolos, de sangre, de la carne de animales que han sido estrangulados y de fornicación(BI). Si se guardan de tales cosas[t], harán bien. Pásenla bien».
Judas y Silas en Antioquía
30 Así que ellos, después de ser despedidos, descendieron a Antioquía(BJ); y reuniendo a la congregación[u], entregaron la carta. 31 Cuando los hermanos la leyeron, se regocijaron por el consuelo[v] que les impartía. 32 Siendo Judas y Silas(BK) también profetas(BL), exhortaron y confortaron a los hermanos(BM) con un largo mensaje.
33 Después de pasar allí algún tiempo, fueron despedidos en paz(BN) por los hermanos para volver a aquellos que los habían enviado(BO). 34 [w]Pero a Silas le pareció bien quedarse allí. 35 También Pablo y Bernabé(BP) se quedaron en Antioquía, enseñando y proclamando con muchos otros, las buenas nuevas de la palabra(BQ) del Señor(BR).
Pablo y Bernabé se separan
36 Después de algunos días Pablo dijo a Bernabé: «Volvamos y visitemos a los hermanos en todas las ciudades(BS) donde hemos proclamado la palabra del Señor(BT), para ver cómo están». 37 Bernabé quería llevar también con ellos a Juan, llamado Marcos(BU), 38 pero Pablo consideraba que no debían llevar consigo a quien los había desertado en[x] Panfilia(BV) y no los había acompañado en[y] la obra. 39 Se produjo un desacuerdo tan grande que se separaron el uno del otro. Bernabé tomó consigo a Marcos(BW) y se embarcó rumbo a Chipre(BX), 40 pero Pablo escogió a Silas(BY) y partió, siendo encomendado por los hermanos a la gracia del Señor(BZ). 41 Y viajaba por Siria(CA) y Cilicia(CB) confirmando a las iglesias.

Traducción en lenguaje actual
Una decisión bien pensada
15 Por esos días llegaron a Antioquía algunos hombres de la región de Judea. Ellos enseñaban a los seguidores de Jesús que debían circuncidarse, porque así lo ordenaba la ley de Moisés. Les enseñaban también que, si no se circuncidaban, Dios no los salvaría. 2 Pablo y Bernabé no estaban de acuerdo con eso, y discutieron con ellos. Por esa razón, los de la iglesia de Antioquía les pidieron a Pablo y a Bernabé que fueran a Jerusalén, y que trataran de resolver ese problema con los apóstoles y los líderes de la iglesia en esa ciudad. Pablo y Bernabé se pusieron en camino, y algunos otros seguidores los acompañaron.
3 En su camino a Jerusalén pasaron por las regiones de Fenicia y Samaria. Allí les contaron a los cristianos judíos que mucha gente no judía había decidido seguir a Dios. Al oír esta noticia, los cristianos judíos se alegraron mucho.
4 Pablo y Bernabé llegaron a Jerusalén. Allí fueron recibidos por los miembros de la iglesia, los apóstoles y los líderes. Luego Pablo y Bernabé les contaron todo lo que Dios había hecho por medio de ellos. 5 Pero algunos fariseos que se habían convertido en seguidores de Jesús, dijeron: «A los que han creído en Jesús, pero que no son judíos, debemos exigirles que obedezcan la ley de Moisés y se circunciden.»
6 Los apóstoles y los líderes de la iglesia se reunieron para tomar una decisión bien pensada. 7 Luego de una larga discusión, Pedro les dijo:
«Amigos míos, como ustedes saben, hace algún tiempo Dios me eligió para anunciar las buenas noticias de Jesús a los que no son judíos, para que ellos crean en él. 8 Y Dios, que conoce nuestros pensamientos, ha demostrado que también ama a los que no son judíos, pues les ha dado el Espíritu Santo lo mismo que a nosotros. 9 Dios no ha hecho ninguna diferencia entre ellos y nosotros, pues también a ellos les perdonó sus pecados cuando creyeron en Jesús.
10 »¿Por qué quieren ir en contra de lo que Dios ha hecho? ¿Por qué quieren obligar a esos seguidores de Jesús a obedecer leyes, que ni nuestros antepasados ni nosotros hemos podido obedecer? 11 Más bien, nosotros creemos que somos salvos gracias a que Jesús nos amó mucho, y también ellos lo creen.»
12 Todos se quedaron callados. Luego, escucharon también a Bernabé y a Pablo, quienes contaron las maravillas y los milagros que, por medio de ellos, Dios había hecho entre los no judíos.
13 Cuando terminaron de hablar, Santiago, el hermano de Jesús, les dijo a todos:
«Amigos míos, escúchenme. 14 Simón Pedro nos ha contado cómo Dios, desde un principio, trató bien a los que no son judíos, y los eligió para que también formaran parte de su pueblo. 15 Esto es lo mismo que Dios anunció en la Biblia por medio de los profetas:
16 “Yo soy el Señor su Dios,
y volveré de nuevo
para que vuelva a reinar
un descendiente de David.
17 Cuando eso pase,
gente de otros países
vendrá a mí,
y serán mis elegidos.
18 Yo soy el Señor su Dios.
Yo había prometido esto
desde hace mucho tiempo.”
19 »Los que no son judíos han decidido ser seguidores de Dios. Yo creo que no debemos obligarlos a obedecer leyes innecesarias. 20 Sólo debemos escribirles una carta y pedirles que no coman ninguna comida que haya sido ofrecida a los ídolos. Que tampoco coman carne de animales que hayan muerto ahogados, ni carne que todavía tenga sangre. Además, deberán evitar las relaciones sexuales que la ley de Moisés prohíbe. 21 Hay que recordar que, desde hace mucho tiempo, en esos mismos pueblos y ciudades se ha estado enseñando y predicando la ley de Moisés. Esto pasa cada sábado en nuestras sinagogas.»
La carta
22 Los apóstoles, los líderes y todos los miembros de la iglesia, decidieron elegir a algunos de ellos y enviarlos a Antioquía, junto con Pablo y Bernabé. Eligieron a Judas, a quien la gente también llamaba Barsabás, y a Silas. Estos dos eran líderes de la iglesia. 23 Con ellos mandaron esta carta:
«Nosotros, los apóstoles y líderes de la iglesia en Jerusalén, les enviamos un cariñoso saludo a todos ustedes, los que viven en las regiones de Antioquía, Siria y Cilicia, y que no son judíos pero creen en Jesús. 24 Hemos sabido que algunos de aquí han ido a verlos, sin nuestro permiso, y los han confundido con sus enseñanzas. 25 Por eso hemos decidido enviarles a algunos de nuestra iglesia. Ellos acompañarán a nuestros queridos compañeros Bernabé y Pablo, 26 los cuales han puesto su vida en peligro por ser obedientes a nuestro Señor Jesucristo. 27 También les enviamos a Judas y a Silas. Ellos personalmente les explicarán el acuerdo a que hemos llegado.
28 »Al Espíritu Santo y a nosotros nos ha parecido bien no obligarlos a obedecer más que las siguientes reglas, que no podemos dejar de cumplir: 29 No coman carne de animales que hayan sido sacrificados en honor a los ídolos; no coman sangre ni carne de animales que todavía tengan sangre adentro, y eviten las relaciones sexuales que la ley de Moisés prohíbe. Si cumplen con esto, harán muy bien. Reciban nuestro cariñoso saludo.»
30 Entonces Bernabé, Pablo, Judas y Silas se fueron a Antioquía. Cuando llegaron allá, se reunieron con los miembros de la iglesia y les entregaron la carta. 31 Cuando la carta se leyó, todos en la iglesia se pusieron muy alegres, pues lo que decía los tranquilizaba. 32 Además, como Judas y Silas eran profetas, hablaron con los seguidores de Jesús, y los tranquilizaron y animaron mucho.
33 Después de pasar algún tiempo con los de la iglesia en Antioquía, los que habían venido de Jerusalén fueron despedidos con mucho cariño. 34-35 Pero Silas, Pablo y Bernabé se quedaron en Antioquía y, junto con muchos otros seguidores, enseñaban y anunciaban las buenas noticias del Señor Jesucristo.[a]
Pablo y Bernabé se separan
36 Tiempo después, Pablo le dijo a Bernabé: «Regresemos a todos los pueblos y ciudades donde hemos anunciado las buenas noticias, para ver cómo están los seguidores de Jesús.»
37 Bernabé quería que Juan Marcos los acompañara, 38 pero Pablo no estuvo de acuerdo. Y es que hacía algún tiempo, Juan Marcos los había abandonado en la región de Panfilia, pues no quiso seguir trabajando con ellos.
39 Pablo y Bernabé no pudieron ponerse de acuerdo, así que terminaron por separarse. Bernabé y Marcos tomaron un barco y se fueron a la isla de Chipre. 40 Por su parte, Pablo eligió a Silas como compañero. Luego, los miembros de la iglesia de Antioquía los despidieron, rogándole a Dios que no dejara de amarlos y cuidarlos. Entonces Pablo y Silas salieron de allí 41 y pasaron por las regiones de Siria y Cilicia, donde animaron a los miembros de las iglesias a seguir confiando en el Señor Jesús.

15 But some men came down from Judea and were instructing the brethren, Unless you are circumcised in accordance with the Mosaic custom, you cannot be saved.(A)
2 And when Paul and Barnabas had no small disagreement and discussion with them, it was decided that Paul and Barnabas and some of the others of their number should go up to Jerusalem [and confer] with the apostles (special messengers) and the elders about this matter.
3 So, being [a]fitted out and sent on their way by the church, they went through both Phoenicia and Samaria telling of the conversion of the Gentiles (the heathen), and they caused great rejoicing among all the brethren.
4 When they arrived in Jerusalem, they were heartily welcomed by the church and the apostles and the elders, and they told them all that God had accomplished through them.
5 But some who believed [who [b]acknowledged Jesus as their Savior and devoted themselves to Him] belonged to the sect of the Pharisees, and they rose up and said, It is necessary to circumcise [the Gentile converts] and to charge them to obey the Law of Moses.
6 The apostles and the elders were assembled together to look into and consider this matter.
7 And after there had been a long debate, Peter got up and said to them, Brethren, you know that quite a while ago God made a choice or selection from among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the message of the Gospel [concerning the [c]attainment through Christ of salvation in the kingdom of God] and believe (credit and place their confidence in it).
8 And God, Who is acquainted with and understands the heart, bore witness to them, giving them the Holy Spirit as He also did to us;
9 And He made no difference between us and them, but cleansed their hearts by faith ([d]by a strong and welcome conviction that Jesus is the Messiah, through Whom we obtain eternal salvation in the kingdom of God).
10 Now then, why do you try to test God by putting a yoke on the necks of the disciples, such as neither our forefathers nor we [ourselves] were able to endure?
11 But we believe that we are saved through the grace (the undeserved favor and mercy) of the Lord Jesus, just as they [are].
12 Then the whole assembly remained silent, and they listened [attentively] as Barnabas and Paul rehearsed what signs and wonders God had performed through them among the Gentiles.
13 When they had finished talking, James replied, Brethren, listen to me.
14 Simeon [Peter] has rehearsed how God first visited the Gentiles, to take out of them a people [to bear and honor] His name.
15 And with this the predictions of the prophets agree, as it is written,
16 After this I will come back, and will rebuild the house of David, which has fallen; I will rebuild its [very] ruins, and I will set it up again,
17 So that the rest of men may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles upon whom My name has been invoked,
18 Says the Lord, Who has been making these things known from the beginning of the world.(B)
19 Therefore it is my opinion that we should not put obstacles in the way of and annoy and disturb those of the Gentiles who turn to God,
20 But we should send word to them in writing to abstain from and avoid anything that has been polluted by being offered to idols, and all sexual impurity, and [eating meat of animals] that have been strangled, and [tasting of] blood.
21 For from ancient generations Moses has had his preachers in every town, for he is read [aloud] every Sabbath in the synagogues.
22 Then the apostles and the elders, together with the whole church, resolved to select men from among their number and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, [both] leading men among the brethren, and sent them.
23 With [them they sent] the following letter: The brethren, both the apostles and the elders, to the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greetings:
24 As we have heard that some persons from our number have disturbed you with their teaching, unsettling your minds and [e]throwing you into confusion, although we gave them no express orders or instructions [on the points in question],
25 It has been resolved by us in assembly to select men and send them [as messengers] to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
26 Men who have hazarded their lives for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ.
27 So we have sent Judas and Silas, who themselves will bring you the same message by word of mouth.
28 For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to lay upon you any greater burden than these indispensable requirements:
29 That you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols and from [tasting] blood and from [eating the meat of animals] that have been strangled and from sexual impurity. If you keep yourselves from these things, you will do well. Farewell [be strong]!
30 So when [the messengers] were sent off, they went down to Antioch; and having assembled the congregation, they delivered the letter.
31 And when they read it, the people rejoiced at the consolation and encouragement [it brought them].
32 And Judas and Silas, who were themselves prophets (inspired interpreters of the will and purposes of God), urged and warned and consoled and encouraged the brethren with many words and strengthened them.
33 And after spending some time there, they were sent back by the brethren with [the greeting] peace to those who had sent them.
34 However, Silas decided to stay on there.
35 But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch and with many others also continued teaching and proclaiming the good news, the Word of the Lord [concerning the [f]attainment through Christ of eternal salvation in God’s kingdom].
36 And after some time Paul said to Barnabas, Come, let us go back and again visit and help and minister to the brethren in every town where we made known the message of the Lord, and see how they are getting along.
37 Now Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark [his near relative].
38 But Paul did not think it best to have along with them the one who had quit and deserted them in Pamphylia and had not gone on with them to the work.
39 And there followed a sharp disagreement between them, so that they separated from each other, and Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus.
40 But Paul selected Silas and set out, being commended by the brethren to the grace (the favor and mercy) of the Lord.
41 And he passed through Syria and Cilicia, establishing and strengthening the churches.
