Hebrews 7:4-10

New International Version

⁴Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch^(A) Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder!^(B) ⁵Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people^(C)—that is, from their fellow Israelites—even though they also are descended from Abraham. ⁶This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed^(D) him who had the promises.^(E) ⁷And without doubt the lesser is blessed by the greater. ⁸In the one case, the tenth is collected by people who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living.^(F) ⁹One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, ¹⁰because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor.

⁴Now observe how great this man was to whom Abraham, the ^(A)patriarch, ^(B)gave a tenth of the choicest spoils. ⁵And those indeed of ^(C)the sons of Levi who receive the priest’s office have a commandment ^[a]in the Law to collect ^[b]a tenth from the people, that is, from their countrymen, although they ^[c]are descended from Abraham. ⁶But the one ^(D)whose genealogy is not traced from them ^(E)collected ^[d]a tenth from Abraham and ^[e]^(F)blessed the one who ^(G)had the promises. ⁷But without any dispute the lesser person is blessed by the greater. ⁸In this case mortal men receive tithes, but in that case one receives them, ^(H)of whom it is witnessed that he lives on. ⁹And, so to speak, through Abraham even Levi, who received tithes, has paid tithes, ¹⁰for he was still in the loins of his ^[f]forefather when Melchizedek met him.
