But see how great he must be, if[a] Abraham the patriarch gave him a tithe[b] of his plunder. And those of the sons of Levi who receive the priestly office[c] have authorization according to the law to collect a tithe from the people, that is, from their fellow countrymen,[d] although they too are descendants of Abraham.[e] But Melchizedek[f] who does not share their ancestry[g] collected a tithe[h] from Abraham and blessed[i] the one who possessed the promise. Now without dispute the inferior is blessed by the superior, and in one case tithes are received by mortal men, while in the other by him who is affirmed to be alive. And it could be said that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid a tithe through Abraham. 10 For he was still in his ancestor Abraham’s loins[j] when Melchizedek met him.

Now consider how great this man was, to whom even Abraham, the patriarch, gave a tenth out of the best plunder. They indeed of the sons of Levi who receive the priest’s office have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brothers, though these have come out of the body of Abraham, but he whose genealogy is not counted from them has accepted tithes from Abraham, and has blessed him who has the promises. But without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater. Here people who die receive tithes, but there one receives tithes of whom it is testified that he lives. We can say that through Abraham even Levi, who receives tithes, has paid tithes, 10 for he was yet in the body of his father when Melchizedek met him.
