17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging(A) nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised,(B) he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie,(C) we who have fled to take hold of the hope(D) set before us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,(E) 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.(F) He has become a high priest(G) forever, in the order of Melchizedek.(H)

17 Because God wanted to show His unchangeable purpose even more clearly to the heirs of the promise, He guaranteed it with an oath,(A) 18 so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us.(B) 19 We have this hope as an anchor for our lives, safe and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain.(C) 20 Jesus has entered there on our behalf as a forerunner,(D) because He has become a high priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.(E)

17 So when God wanted to prove for certain his promise to his people could not be broken, he made a vow. 18 God cannot tell lies! And so his promises and vows are two things that can never be changed.

We have run to God for safety. Now his promises should greatly encourage us to take hold of the hope that is right in front of us. 19 (A) This hope is like a firm and steady anchor for our souls. In fact, hope reaches behind the curtain[a] and into the most holy place. 20 (B) Jesus has gone there ahead of us, and he is our high priest forever, just like Melchizedek.[b]

  1. 6.19 behind the curtain: In the tent that was used for worship, a curtain separated the “holy place” from the “most holy place,” which only the high priest could enter.

17 Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to (A)the heirs of promise (B)the [a]immutability of His counsel, [b]confirmed it by an oath, 18 that by two [c]immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to (C)lie, we [d]might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope (D)set before us.

19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, (E)and which enters the Presence behind the veil, 20 (F)where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, (G)having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

17 God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind. 18 So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. 19 This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary. 20 Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.
