⁷ In the days of his flesh, ^(A)Jesus^[a] offered up prayers and supplications, ^(B)with loud cries and tears, to him ^(C)who was able to save him from death, and ^(D)he was heard because of his reverence.

The High Priestly Prayer

17 When Jesus had spoken these words, ^(A)he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, ^(B)the hour has come; ^(C)glorify your Son that the Son may ^(D)glorify you,

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

^32 (A)And they went ^(B)to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” ³³ And he took with him ^(C)Peter and James and John, and began ^(D)to be greatly distressed and troubled. ³⁴ And he said to them, ^(E)“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and ^(F)watch.”^{[a] 35} And going a little farther, he fell on the ground ^(G)and prayed that, if it were possible, ^(H)the hour might pass from him. ³⁶ And he said, ^(I)“Abba, Father, ^(J)all things are possible for you. Remove ^(K)this cup from me. ^(L)Yet not what I will, but what you will.” ³⁷ And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? ^38 (M)Watch and ^(N)pray that you may not ^(O)enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” ³⁹ And again he went away and prayed, ^(P)saying the same words.

⁴⁶ And about the ninth hour Jesus ^(A)cried out with a loud voice, saying, ^(B)“Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

⁴ I ^(A)glorified you on earth, ^(B)having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. ⁵ And now, Father, ^(C)glorify me in your own presence with the glory ^(D)that I had with you ^(E)before the world existed.

⁴¹ And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and ^(A)knelt down and prayed, ⁴² saying, ^(B)“Father, if you are willing, remove ^(C)this cup from me. ^(D)Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” ⁴³ And there appeared to him ^(E)an angel from heaven, strengthening him. ⁴⁴ And ^(F)being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.^[a]

³⁴ And at the ninth hour Jesus ^(A)cried with a loud voice, ^(B)“Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

²⁸ for ^(A)this is my ^(B)blood of the^[a] covenant, which is poured out for ^(C)many ^(D)for the forgiveness of sins. ²⁹ I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you ^(E)in my Father's kingdom.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

^30 (F)And when they had sung a hymn, ^(G)they went out to ^(H)the Mount of Olives. ³¹ Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will ^(I)strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ ³² But after I am raised up, ^(J)I will go before you to Galilee.” ^33 (K)Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” ^34 (L)Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, ^(M)before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” ^35 (N)Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

^36 (O)Then Jesus went with them ^(P)to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” ³⁷ And taking with him ^(Q)Peter and ^(R)the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. ³⁸ Then he said to them, ^(S)“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and ^(T)watch^[b] with me.” ³⁹ And going a little farther he fell on his face ^(U)and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let ^(V)this cup pass from me; ^(W)nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” ⁴⁰ And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? ^41 (X)Watch and ^(Y)pray that you ^(Z)may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” ⁴² Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, ^(AA)your will be done.” ⁴³ And again he came and found them sleeping, for ^(AB)their eyes were heavy. ⁴⁴ So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for ^(AC)the third time, saying the same words again.

⁵⁰ And Jesus ^(A)cried out again with a loud voice and ^(B)yielded up his spirit.
