Qualifications for High Priesthood

For every high priest taken from among men (A)is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can [a]have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to (B)weakness. Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for (C)himself, to offer sacrifices for sins. And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as (D)Aaron was.

A Priest Forever

(E)So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him:

(F)“You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.”

As He also says in another place:

(G)“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek”;

who, in the days of His flesh, when He had (H)offered up prayers and supplications, (I)with vehement cries and tears to Him (J)who was able to save Him from death, and was heard (K)because of His godly fear, though He was a Son, yet He learned (L)obedience by the things which He suffered. And (M)having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, 10 called by God as High Priest (N)“according to the order of Melchizedek,” 11 of whom (O)we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become (P)dull of hearing.

Spiritual Immaturity

12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the [b]oracles of God; and you have come to need (Q)milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is (R)a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are [c]of full age, that is, those who by reason of [d]use have their senses exercised (S)to discern both good and evil.

The Peril of Not Progressing

Therefore, (T)leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to [e]perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from (U)dead works and of faith toward God, (V)of the doctrine of baptisms, (W)of laying on of hands, (X)of resurrection of the dead, (Y)and of eternal judgment. And this [f]we will do if God permits.

For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted (Z)the heavenly gift, and (AA)have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, [g]if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, (AB)since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.

For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those by whom it is cultivated, (AC)receives blessing from God; (AD)but if it bears thorns and briers, it is rejected and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned.

A Better Estimate

But, beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you, yes, things that accompany salvation, though we speak in this manner. 10 For (AE)God is not unjust to forget (AF)your work and [h]labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have (AG)ministered to the saints, and do minister. 11 And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence (AH)to the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 that you do not become [i]sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience (AI)inherit the promises.

God’s Infallible Purpose in Christ

13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, (AJ)He swore by Himself, 14 saying, (AK)“Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” 15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the (AL)promise. 16 For men indeed swear by the greater, and (AM)an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute. 17 Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to (AN)the heirs of promise (AO)the [j]immutability of His counsel, [k]confirmed it by an oath, 18 that by two [l]immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to (AP)lie, we [m]might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope (AQ)set before us.

19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, (AR)and which enters the Presence behind the veil, 20 (AS)where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, (AT)having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

The King of Righteousness(AU)

For this (AV)Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of peace,” without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.

Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the [n]spoils. And indeed (AW)those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to receive tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren, though they have come from the loins of Abraham; but he whose genealogy is not derived from them received tithes from Abraham (AX)and blessed (AY)him who had the promises. Now beyond all contradiction the lesser is blessed by the better. Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he receives them, (AZ)of whom it is witnessed that he lives. Even Levi, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, so to speak, 10 for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.

Need for a New Priesthood(BA)

11 (BB)Therefore, if perfection were through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be called according to the order of Aaron? 12 For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law. 13 For He of whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no man has [o]officiated at the altar.

14 For it is evident that (BC)our Lord arose from (BD)Judah, of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning [p]priesthood. 15 And it is yet far more evident if, in the likeness of Melchizedek, there arises another priest 16 who has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life. 17 For [q]He testifies:

(BE)“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”

18 For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of (BF)its weakness and unprofitableness, 19 for (BG)the law made nothing [r]perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of (BH)a better hope, through which (BI)we draw near to God.

Greatness of the New Priest

20 And inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath 21 (for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him:

(BJ)“The Lord has sworn
And will not relent,
‘You are a priest [s]forever
According to the order of Melchizedek’ ”),

22 by so much more Jesus has become a [t]surety of a (BK)better covenant.

23 Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing. 24 But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Therefore He is also (BL)able to save [u]to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives (BM)to make intercession for them.

26 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, (BN)who is holy, [v]harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, (BO)and has become higher than the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His (BP)own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever.

The New Priestly Service

Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, (BQ)who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a Minister of (BR)the [w]sanctuary and of (BS)the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man.

For (BT)every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore (BU)it is necessary that this One also have something to offer. For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law; who serve (BV)the copy and (BW)shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, (BX)“See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” But now (BY)He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a (BZ)better covenant, which was established on better promises.

A New Covenant(CA)

For if that (CB)first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. Because finding fault with them, He says: (CC)“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the (CD)Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and (CE)I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 11 (CF)None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the (CG)Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, (CH)and their sins [x]and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

13 (CI)In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

The Earthly Sanctuary(CJ)

Then indeed, even the first covenant had ordinances of divine service and (CK)the earthly sanctuary. For a tabernacle was prepared: the first part, in which was the lampstand, the table, and the showbread, which is called the [y]sanctuary; (CL)and behind the second veil, the part of the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of All, which had the (CM)golden censer and (CN)the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which were (CO)the golden pot that had the manna, (CP)Aaron’s rod that budded, and (CQ)the tablets of the covenant; and (CR)above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

Limitations of the Earthly Service

Now when these things had been thus prepared, (CS)the priests always went into the first part of the tabernacle, performing the services. But into the second part the high priest went alone (CT)once a year, not without blood, which he offered for (CU)himself and for the people’s sins committed in ignorance; the Holy Spirit indicating this, that (CV)the way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was still standing. It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered (CW)which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the conscience— 10 concerned only with (CX)foods and drinks, (CY)various [z]washings, (CZ)and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation.

The Heavenly Sanctuary

11 But Christ came as High Priest of (DA)the good things [aa]to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. 12 Not (DB)with the blood of goats and calves, but (DC)with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place (DD)once for all, (DE)having obtained eternal redemption. 13 For if (DF)the blood of bulls and goats and (DG)the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, [ab]sanctifies for the [ac]purifying of the flesh, 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without [ad]spot to God, (DH)cleanse your conscience from (DI)dead works (DJ)to serve the living God? 15 And for this reason (DK)He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that (DL)those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

The Mediator’s Death Necessary

16 For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For (DM)a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives. 18 (DN)Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood. 19 For when Moses had spoken every [ae]precept to all the people according to the law, (DO)he took the blood of calves and goats, (DP)with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, (DQ)“This is the (DR)blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.” 21 Then likewise (DS)he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. 22 And according to the law almost all things are [af]purified with blood, and (DT)without shedding of blood there is no [ag]remission.

Greatness of Christ’s Sacrifice

23 Therefore it was necessary that (DU)the copies of the things in the heavens should be [ah]purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For (DV)Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are [ai]copies of (DW)the true, but into heaven itself, now (DX)to appear in the presence of God for us; 25 not that He should offer Himself often, as (DY)the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another— 26 He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. 27 (DZ)And as it is appointed for men to die once, (EA)but after this the judgment, 28 so (EB)Christ was (EC)offered once to bear the sins (ED)of many. To those who (EE)eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

Animal Sacrifices Insufficient

10 For the law, having a (EF)shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, (EG)can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once [aj]purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For (EH)it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

Christ’s Death Fulfills God’s Will(EI)

Therefore, when He came into the world, He said:

(EJ)“Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,
But a body You have prepared for Me.
In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin
You had no pleasure.
Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come—
In the volume of the book it is written of Me—
To do Your will, O God.’ ”

Previously saying, “Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the law), then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, [ak]O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10 (EK)By that will we have been [al]sanctified (EL)through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Christ’s Death Perfects the Sanctified

11 And every priest stands (EM)ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 (EN)But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down (EO)at the right hand of God, 13 from that time waiting (EP)till His enemies are made His footstool. 14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being [am]sanctified.

15 But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before,

16 (EQ)“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” 17 then He adds, (ER)“Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” 18 Now where there is [an]remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

Hold Fast Your Confession

19 Therefore, brethren, having (ES)boldness[ao] to enter (ET)the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and (EU)living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us (EV)draw near with a true heart (EW)in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for (EX)He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 (EY)not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and (EZ)so much the more as you see (FA)the Day approaching.

For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to represent men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to have compassion on the ignorant and on those who are wayward, for he himself is also subject to weakness. Because of this he must offer sacrifices for his own sins, just as he does for the people. No man takes this honor for himself, but he who is called by God receives it, just as Aaron did.

So also Christ did not glorify Himself to be made a High Priest, but it was He who said to Him:

“You are My Son;
    today I have become Your Father.”[a]

As He also says in another place:

“You are a priest forever
    in the order of Melchizedek.”[b]

In the days of His flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death. He was heard because of His godly fear. Though He was a Son, He learned obedience through the things that He suffered, and being made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey Him, 10 being designated by God a High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Warning Against Apostasy

11 Concerning this we have much to say that is hard to explain, since you have become hard of hearing. 12 For though by now you should be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God and have come to need milk rather than solid food. 13 Everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a baby. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are mature, for those who through practice have powers of discernment that are trained to distinguish good from evil.

Therefore, leaving the elementary principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. This we will do if God permits.

For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they fall away, to be renewed once more to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and subject Him to public shame. For land that drinks in the rain that often falls upon it and bears a crop useful to those for whom it is cultivated receives a blessing from God. But land that bears thorns and thistles is rejected and near to being cursed. Its destiny is to be burned.

But though we speak in this manner, we are persuaded of better things for you, things that accompany salvation, 10 for God is not unjust so as to forget your work and labor of love that you have shown for His name, in that you have ministered to the saints and continue ministering. 11 We desire that every one of you show the same diligence for the full assurance of hope to the end, 12 so that you may not be lazy, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

Sure Promise of God

13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could vow by no one greater, He vowed by Himself, 14 saying, “Surely I will bless you, and surely I will multiply you.”[c] 15 So after Abraham had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

16 For men indeed swear by a greater authority than themselves, and for them an oath of confirmation ends all dispute. 17 So God, wanting to show more abundantly the immutability of His counsel to the heirs of promise, confirmed it by an oath. 18 So that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. 19 We have this hope as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, which enters the Inner Place behind the veil. 20 This is where Jesus has entered for us as a forerunner, since He has become the everlasting High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.

The Priestly Order of Melchizedek

For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him. To him Abraham also gave a tenth part of everything. In the first place, his name is translated “king of righteousness,” and then also he is king of Salem, which means “king of peace.” Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, he continually remains a priest.

Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils. Surely the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a command to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, from their brothers, though they also come from the seed of Abraham. But this man, whose descent is not numbered among them, received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. Without question, the inferior is blessed by the superior. In the one case mortal men receive tithes, but in the other he of whom it is witnessed that he is alive receives them. One might say that Levi also, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, 10 for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met Abraham.

11 If perfection were attained through the Levitical priesthood (for through it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise in the order of Melchizedek, rather than established in the order of Aaron? 12 For a change in the priesthood necessitates a change in the law. 13 For the One concerning whom these things are spoken pertains to another tribe, from which no man served at the altar. 14 For it is evident that our Lord descended from Judah, a tribe concerning which Moses said nothing about priests. 15 This is far more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, 16 who becomes a priest not by a law pertaining to ancestry, but by the power of an endless life. 17 For He testifies:

“You are a priest forever,
    in the order of Melchizedek.”[d]

18 For there is then an annulling of the previous commandment due to its weakness and uselessness. 19 For the law made nothing perfect, but now a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.

20 And He was not made a priest without an oath. 21 (Other priests were made without an oath, but this One with an oath by the One who said to Him:

“The Lord has sworn
    and will not relent,
‘You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.’ ”[e])

22 Through this oath Jesus became the guarantor of a better covenant.

23 And the former priests were numerous because they were hindered from serving because of death. 24 But He, because He lives forever, has an everlasting priesthood. 25 Therefore He is able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, because He at all times lives to make intercession for them.

26 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, for He is holy, innocent, undefiled, separate from sinners, and is higher than the heavens. 27 Unlike those high priests, He does not need to offer daily sacrifices—first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for He did this once for all when He offered up Himself. 28 For the law appoints men who are weak as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints a Son who is made perfect forever.

Jesus Our High Priest

Now this is the main point of the things that we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a minister in the sanctuary and the true tabernacle, which the Lord, not man, set up.

For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is necessary that this priest also have something to offer. For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests that offer gifts according to the law. They serve in a sanctuary that is an example and shadow of the heavenly one, as Moses was instructed by God when he was about to make the tabernacle, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”[f] But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, because He is the Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.

For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no occasion would have been sought for a second. For finding fault with them, God says:

“Surely the days are coming, says the Lord,
    when I will make a new covenant
with the house of Israel
    and with the house of Judah,
not according to the covenant
    that I made with their fathers
in the day when I took them by the hand
    to lead them out of the land of Egypt;
because they did not continue in My covenant,
    and I rejected them, says the Lord.
10 This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
    after those days, says the Lord:
I will put My laws into their minds
    and write them on their hearts;
and I will be their God,
    and they shall be My people.
11 No longer shall every man teach his neighbor,
    and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’
for all shall know Me,
    from the least of them to the greatest.[g]
12 For I will be merciful toward their unrighteousness,
    and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”[h]

13 In speaking of a new covenant He has made the first one old. Now that which is decaying and growing old is ready to vanish away.

The Earthly and Heavenly Sanctuaries

Then indeed, the first covenant had ordinances for divine services and an earthly sanctuary. A tabernacle was made. In the first part of the tabernacle, called the Holy Place, were the candlestick, the table, and the showbread. Behind the second veil was the second part of the tabernacle called the Most Holy Place, which contained the golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid with gold, containing the golden pot holding the manna, Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant. Above the ark were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Concerning these things we cannot now speak in detail.

Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests would regularly go into the first part, conducting the services of God. But only the high priest went into the second part once a year, not without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins of the people, committed in ignorance. The Holy Spirit was signifying through this that the way into the Most Holy Place was not yet revealed, because the first part of the tabernacle was still standing. This is an illustration for the present time, showing that the gifts and sacrifices offered could not perfect the conscience of those who worshipped, 10 since they are concerned only with foods and drinks, ceremonial cleansings, and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation.

11 But Christ, when He came as a High Priest of the good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation, 12 neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood, He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of bulls and goats, and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies so that the flesh is purified, 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

15 For this reason He is the Mediator of a new covenant, since a death has occurred for the redemption of the sins that were committed under the first covenant, so that those who are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

16 For where there is a will, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For a will has force after men are dead, since it has no force at all while the testator lives. 18 So not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood. 19 For when Moses had taught every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book and all the people, 20 saying, “This is the blood of the covenant that God has commanded you to keep.”[i] 21 Likewise he sprinkled both the tabernacle and all the vessels of worship with blood. 22 And according to the law almost everything must be cleansed with blood; without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

Christ’s Sacrifice Takes Away Sin

23 It was therefore necessary that the replicas of heavenly things be cleansed with these sacrifices, but that the heavenly things themselves be cleansed with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ did not enter holy places made with hands, which are patterned after the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us. 25 Nor did He enter to offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. 26 For then He would have had to suffer repeatedly since the world was created, but now He has appeared once at the end of the ages to put away sin by sacrificing Himself. 27 As it is appointed for men to die once, but after this comes the judgment, 28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many, and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin but to save those who eagerly wait for Him.

10 For the law is a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of those things. It could never by the same sacrifices, which they offer continually year after year, perfect those who draw near. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshippers, once purified, would no longer be conscious of sins? But in those sacrifices there is an annual reminder of sins. For it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Therefore, when He came into the world, He said:

“Sacrifices and offerings You did not desire,
    but a body You have prepared for Me.
In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin
    You have had no pleasure.
Then I said, ‘See, I have come to do Your will, O God,’ as it is written of Me
    in the volume of the book.”[j]

Previously when He said, “You did not desire sacrifices and offerings. You have had no pleasure in burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin,”[k] which are offered in accordance with the law, then He said, “See, I have come to do Your will, O God.”[l] He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10 By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11 But every priest stands daily ministering and repetitively offering the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God. 13 Since that time He has been waiting for His enemies to be made His footstool. 14 For by one offering He has forever perfected those who are sanctified.

15 The Holy Spirit also witnesses to us about this. For after saying,

16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them
    after those days, says the Lord:
I will put My laws into their hearts,
    and in their minds I will write them,”[m]

17 then He adds,

“Their sins and lawless deeds
    will I remember no more.”[n]

18 Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

Exhortation and Warning

19 Therefore, brothers, we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way that He has opened for us through the veil, that is to say, His flesh, 21 and since we have a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse them from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us firmly hold the profession of our faith without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to spur one another to love and to good works. 25 Let us not forsake the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but let us exhort one another, especially as you see the Day approaching.

For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; and being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; 10 called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this will we do, if God permit. For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God: but that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. 10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. 11 And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: 12 that ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, 14 saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. 15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. 16 For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife. 17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: 18 that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: 19 which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; 20 whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.

Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils. And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham: but he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises. And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better. And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth. And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. 10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.

11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron? 12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law. 13 For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar. 14 For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.

15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, 16 who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life. 17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. 18 For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. 19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.

20 And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest: 21 (for those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:) 22 by so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. 23 And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: 24 but this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; 27 who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. 28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.

Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; a minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer. For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: 11 and they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. 13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary. For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary. And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; and over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.

Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God. But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people: the Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; 10 which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.

11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; 12 neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. 13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. 16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. 18 Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood. 19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, 20 saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. 21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: 25 nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; 26 for then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: 28 so Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

10 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: in burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: 12 but this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; 13 from henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. 14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. 15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; 17 and their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. 18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; 21 and having an high priest over the house of God; 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) 24 and let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Porque todo sumo sacerdote tomado de entre los hombres es constituido a favor de los hombres en lo que a Dios se refiere, para que presente ofrendas y sacrificios por los pecados; para que se muestre paciente con los ignorantes y extraviados, puesto que él también está rodeado de debilidad; y por causa de ella debe ofrecer por los pecados, tanto por sí mismo como también por el pueblo.(A) Y nadie toma para sí esta honra, sino el que es llamado por Dios, como lo fue Aarón.(B)

Como también dice en otro lugar:

Tú eres sacerdote para siempre,

Según el orden de Melquisedec.(D)

Y Cristo, en los días de su carne, ofreciendo ruegos y súplicas con gran clamor y lágrimas al que le podía librar de la muerte,(E) fue oído a causa de su temor reverente. Y aunque era Hijo, por lo que padeció aprendió la obediencia; y habiendo sido perfeccionado, vino a ser autor de eterna salvación para todos los que le obedecen; 10 y fue declarado por Dios sumo sacerdote según el orden de Melquisedec.

Advertencia contra la apostasía

11 Acerca de esto tenemos mucho que decir, y difícil de explicar, por cuanto os habéis hecho tardos para oír. 12 Porque debiendo ser ya maestros, después de tanto tiempo, tenéis necesidad de que se os vuelva a enseñar cuáles son los primeros rudimentos de las palabras de Dios; y habéis llegado a ser tales que tenéis necesidad de leche, y no de alimento sólido. 13 Y todo aquel que participa de la leche es inexperto en la palabra de justicia, porque es niño;(F) 14 pero el alimento sólido es para los que han alcanzado madurez, para los que por el uso tienen los sentidos ejercitados en el discernimiento del bien y del mal.

Por tanto, dejando ya los rudimentos de la doctrina de Cristo, vamos adelante a la perfección; no echando otra vez el fundamento del arrepentimiento de obras muertas, de la fe en Dios, de la doctrina de bautismos, de la imposición de manos, de la resurrección de los muertos y del juicio eterno. Y esto haremos, si Dios en verdad lo permite. Porque es imposible que los que una vez fueron iluminados y gustaron del don celestial, y fueron hechos partícipes del Espíritu Santo, y asimismo gustaron de la buena palabra de Dios y los poderes del siglo venidero, y recayeron, sean otra vez renovados para arrepentimiento, crucificando de nuevo para sí mismos al Hijo de Dios y exponiéndole a vituperio. Porque la tierra que bebe la lluvia que muchas veces cae sobre ella, y produce hierba provechosa a aquellos por los cuales es labrada, recibe bendición de Dios; pero la que produce espinos y abrojos es reprobada, está próxima a ser maldecida,(G) y su fin es el ser quemada.

Pero en cuanto a vosotros, oh amados, estamos persuadidos de cosas mejores, y que pertenecen a la salvación, aunque hablamos así. 10 Porque Dios no es injusto para olvidar vuestra obra y el trabajo de amor que habéis mostrado hacia su nombre, habiendo servido a los santos y sirviéndoles aún. 11 Pero deseamos que cada uno de vosotros muestre la misma solicitud hasta el fin, para plena certeza de la esperanza, 12 a fin de que no os hagáis perezosos, sino imitadores de aquellos que por la fe y la paciencia heredan las promesas.

13 Porque cuando Dios hizo la promesa a Abraham, no pudiendo jurar por otro mayor, juró por sí mismo, 14 diciendo: De cierto te bendeciré con abundancia y te multiplicaré grandemente.(H) 15 Y habiendo esperado con paciencia, alcanzó la promesa. 16 Porque los hombres ciertamente juran por uno mayor que ellos, y para ellos el fin de toda controversia es el juramento para confirmación. 17 Por lo cual, queriendo Dios mostrar más abundantemente a los herederos de la promesa la inmutabilidad de su consejo, interpuso juramento; 18 para que por dos cosas inmutables, en las cuales es imposible que Dios mienta, tengamos un fortísimo consuelo los que hemos acudido para asirnos de la esperanza puesta delante de nosotros. 19 La cual tenemos como segura y firme ancla del alma, y que penetra hasta dentro del velo,(I) 20 donde Jesús entró por nosotros como precursor, hecho sumo sacerdote para siempre según el orden de Melquisedec.(J)

El sacerdocio de Melquisedec

Porque este Melquisedec, rey de Salem, sacerdote del Dios Altísimo, que salió a recibir a Abraham que volvía de la derrota de los reyes, y le bendijo, a quien asimismo dio Abraham los diezmos de todo;(K) cuyo nombre significa primeramente Rey de justicia, y también Rey de Salem, esto es, Rey de paz; sin padre, sin madre, sin genealogía; que ni tiene principio de días, ni fin de vida, sino hecho semejante al Hijo de Dios, permanece sacerdote para siempre.

Considerad, pues, cuán grande era este, a quien aun Abraham el patriarca dio diezmos del botín. Ciertamente los que de entre los hijos de Leví reciben el sacerdocio, tienen mandamiento de tomar del pueblo los diezmos según la ley,(L) es decir, de sus hermanos, aunque estos también hayan salido de los lomos de Abraham. Pero aquel cuya genealogía no es contada de entre ellos, tomó de Abraham los diezmos, y bendijo al que tenía las promesas. Y sin discusión alguna, el menor es bendecido por el mayor. Y aquí ciertamente reciben los diezmos hombres mortales; pero allí, uno de quien se da testimonio de que vive. Y por decirlo así, en Abraham pagó el diezmo también Leví, que recibe los diezmos; 10 porque aún estaba en los lomos de su padre cuando Melquisedec le salió al encuentro.

11 Si, pues, la perfección fuera por el sacerdocio levítico (porque bajo él recibió el pueblo la ley), ¿qué necesidad habría aún de que se levantase otro sacerdote, según el orden de Melquisedec, y que no fuese llamado según el orden de Aarón? 12 Porque cambiado el sacerdocio, necesario es que haya también cambio de ley; 13 y aquel de quien se dice esto, es de otra tribu, de la cual nadie sirvió al altar. 14 Porque manifiesto es que nuestro Señor vino de la tribu de Judá, de la cual nada habló Moisés tocante al sacerdocio.

15 Y esto es aun más manifiesto, si a semejanza de Melquisedec se levanta un sacerdote distinto, 16 no constituido conforme a la ley del mandamiento acerca de la descendencia, sino según el poder de una vida indestructible. 17 Pues se da testimonio de él:

Tú eres sacerdote para siempre,

Según el orden de Melquisedec.(M)

18 Queda, pues, abrogado el mandamiento anterior a causa de su debilidad e ineficacia 19 (pues nada perfeccionó la ley), y de la introducción de una mejor esperanza, por la cual nos acercamos a Dios.

20 Y esto no fue hecho sin juramento; 21 porque los otros ciertamente sin juramento fueron hechos sacerdotes; pero este, con el juramento del que le dijo:

Juró el Señor, y no se arrepentirá:

Tú eres sacerdote para siempre,

Según el orden de Melquisedec.(N)

22 Por tanto, Jesús es hecho fiador de un mejor pacto.

23 Y los otros sacerdotes llegaron a ser muchos, debido a que por la muerte no podían continuar; 24 mas este, por cuanto permanece para siempre, tiene un sacerdocio inmutable; 25 por lo cual puede también salvar perpetuamente a los que por él se acercan a Dios, viviendo siempre para interceder por ellos.

26 Porque tal sumo sacerdote nos convenía: santo, inocente, sin mancha, apartado de los pecadores, y hecho más sublime que los cielos; 27 que no tiene necesidad cada día, como aquellos sumos sacerdotes, de ofrecer primero sacrificios por sus propios pecados, y luego por los del pueblo;(O) porque esto lo hizo una vez para siempre, ofreciéndose a sí mismo. 28 Porque la ley constituye sumos sacerdotes a débiles hombres; pero la palabra del juramento, posterior a la ley, al Hijo, hecho perfecto para siempre.

El mediador de un nuevo pacto

Ahora bien, el punto principal de lo que venimos diciendo es que tenemos tal sumo sacerdote, el cual se sentó a la diestra del trono de la Majestad en los cielos,(P) ministro del santuario, y de aquel verdadero tabernáculo que levantó el Señor, y no el hombre. Porque todo sumo sacerdote está constituido para presentar ofrendas y sacrificios; por lo cual es necesario que también este tenga algo que ofrecer. Así que, si estuviese sobre la tierra, ni siquiera sería sacerdote, habiendo aún sacerdotes que presentan las ofrendas según la ley; los cuales sirven a lo que es figura y sombra de las cosas celestiales, como se le advirtió a Moisés cuando iba a erigir el tabernáculo, diciéndole: Mira, haz todas las cosas conforme al modelo que se te ha mostrado en el monte.(Q) Pero ahora tanto mejor ministerio es el suyo, cuanto es mediador de un mejor pacto, establecido sobre mejores promesas. Porque si aquel primero hubiera sido sin defecto, ciertamente no se hubiera procurado lugar para el segundo.

Porque reprendiéndolos dice:

He aquí vienen días, dice el Señor,

En que estableceré con la casa de Israel y la casa de Judá un nuevo pacto;

No como el pacto que hice con sus padres

El día que los tomé de la mano para sacarlos de la tierra de Egipto;

Porque ellos no permanecieron en mi pacto,

Y yo me desentendí de ellos, dice el Señor.

10 Por lo cual, este es el pacto que haré con la casa de Israel

Después de aquellos días, dice el Señor:

Pondré mis leyes en la mente de ellos,

Y sobre su corazón las escribiré;

Y seré a ellos por Dios,

Y ellos me serán a mí por pueblo;

11 Y ninguno enseñará a su prójimo,

Ni ninguno a su hermano, diciendo: Conoce al Señor;

Porque todos me conocerán,

Desde el menor hasta el mayor de ellos.

12 Porque seré propicio a sus injusticias,

Y nunca más me acordaré de sus pecados y de sus iniquidades.(R)

13 Al decir: Nuevo pacto, ha dado por viejo al primero; y lo que se da por viejo y se envejece, está próximo a desaparecer.

Ahora bien, aun el primer pacto tenía ordenanzas de culto y un santuario terrenal. Porque el tabernáculo(S) estaba dispuesto así: en la primera parte, llamada el Lugar Santo, estaban el candelabro,(T) la mesa y los panes de la proposición.(U) Tras el segundo velo estaba la parte del tabernáculo llamada el Lugar Santísimo,(V) el cual tenía un incensario de oro(W) y el arca del pacto cubierta de oro por todas partes,(X) en la que estaba una urna de oro que contenía el maná,(Y) la vara de Aarón que reverdeció,(Z) y las tablas del pacto;(AA) y sobre ella los querubines de gloria que cubrían el propiciatorio;(AB) de las cuales cosas no se puede ahora hablar en detalle.

Y así dispuestas estas cosas, en la primera parte del tabernáculo entran los sacerdotes continuamente para cumplir los oficios del culto;(AC) pero en la segunda parte, sólo el sumo sacerdote una vez al año, no sin sangre, la cual ofrece por sí mismo y por los pecados de ignorancia del pueblo;(AD) dando el Espíritu Santo a entender con esto que aún no se había manifestado el camino al Lugar Santísimo, entre tanto que la primera parte del tabernáculo estuviese en pie. Lo cual es símbolo para el tiempo presente, según el cual se presentan ofrendas y sacrificios que no pueden hacer perfecto, en cuanto a la conciencia, al que practica ese culto, 10 ya que consiste solo de comidas y bebidas, de diversas abluciones, y ordenanzas acerca de la carne, impuestas hasta el tiempo de reformar las cosas.

11 Pero estando ya presente Cristo, sumo sacerdote de los bienes venideros, por el más amplio y más perfecto tabernáculo, no hecho de manos, es decir, no de esta creación, 12 y no por sangre de machos cabríos ni de becerros, sino por su propia sangre, entró una vez para siempre en el Lugar Santísimo, habiendo obtenido eterna redención. 13 Porque si la sangre de los toros y de los machos cabríos,(AE) y las cenizas de la becerra(AF) rociadas a los inmundos, santifican para la purificación de la carne, 14 ¿cuánto más la sangre de Cristo, el cual mediante el Espíritu eterno se ofreció a sí mismo sin mancha a Dios, limpiará vuestras conciencias de obras muertas para que sirváis al Dios vivo?

15 Así que, por eso es mediador de un nuevo pacto,[a] para que interviniendo muerte para la remisión de las transgresiones que había bajo el primer pacto, los llamados reciban la promesa de la herencia eterna. 16 Porque donde hay testamento,[b] es necesario que intervenga muerte del testador. 17 Porque el testamento con la muerte se confirma; pues no es válido entre tanto que el testador vive. 18 De donde ni aun el primer pacto fue instituido sin sangre. 19 Porque habiendo anunciado Moisés todos los mandamientos de la ley a todo el pueblo, tomó la sangre de los becerros y de los machos cabríos, con agua, lana escarlata e hisopo, y roció el mismo libro y también a todo el pueblo, 20 diciendo: Esta es la sangre del pacto que Dios os ha mandado.(AG) 21 Y además de esto, roció también con la sangre el tabernáculo y todos los vasos del ministerio.(AH) 22 Y casi todo es purificado, según la ley, con sangre; y sin derramamiento de sangre no se hace remisión.(AI)

El sacrificio de Cristo quita el pecado

23 Fue, pues, necesario que las figuras de las cosas celestiales fuesen purificadas así; pero las cosas celestiales mismas, con mejores sacrificios que estos. 24 Porque no entró Cristo en el santuario hecho de mano, figura del verdadero, sino en el cielo mismo para presentarse ahora por nosotros ante Dios; 25 y no para ofrecerse muchas veces, como entra el sumo sacerdote en el Lugar Santísimo cada año con sangre ajena. 26 De otra manera le hubiera sido necesario padecer muchas veces desde el principio del mundo; pero ahora, en la consumación de los siglos, se presentó una vez para siempre por el sacrificio de sí mismo para quitar de en medio el pecado. 27 Y de la manera que está establecido para los hombres que mueran una sola vez, y después de esto el juicio, 28 así también Cristo fue ofrecido una sola vez para llevar los pecados de muchos; y aparecerá por segunda vez, sin relación con el pecado, para salvar a los que le esperan.

10 Porque la ley, teniendo la sombra de los bienes venideros, no la imagen misma de las cosas, nunca puede, por los mismos sacrificios que se ofrecen continuamente cada año, hacer perfectos a los que se acercan. De otra manera cesarían de ofrecerse, pues los que tributan este culto, limpios una vez, no tendrían ya más conciencia de pecado. Pero en estos sacrificios cada año se hace memoria de los pecados; porque la sangre de los toros y de los machos cabríos no puede quitar los pecados. Por lo cual, entrando en el mundo dice:

Sacrificio y ofrenda no quisiste;

Mas me preparaste cuerpo.

Holocaustos y expiaciones por el pecado no te agradaron.

Entonces dije: He aquí que vengo, oh Dios, para

hacer tu voluntad,

Como en el rollo del libro está escrito de mí.(AJ)

Diciendo primero: Sacrificio y ofrenda y holocaustos y expiaciones por el pecado no quisiste, ni te agradaron (las cuales cosas se ofrecen según la ley), y diciendo luego: He aquí que vengo, oh Dios, para hacer tu voluntad; quita lo primero, para establecer esto último. 10 En esa voluntad somos santificados mediante la ofrenda del cuerpo de Jesucristo hecha una vez para siempre.

11 Y ciertamente todo sacerdote está día tras día ministrando y ofreciendo muchas veces los mismos sacrificios, que nunca pueden quitar los pecados;(AK) 12 pero Cristo, habiendo ofrecido una vez para siempre un solo sacrificio por los pecados, se ha sentado a la diestra de Dios, 13 de ahí en adelante esperando hasta que sus enemigos sean puestos por estrado de sus pies;(AL) 14 porque con una sola ofrenda hizo perfectos para siempre a los santificados. 15 Y nos atestigua lo mismo el Espíritu Santo; porque después de haber dicho:

16 Este es el pacto que haré con ellos

Después de aquellos días, dice el Señor:

Pondré mis leyes en sus corazones,

Y en sus mentes las escribiré,(AM)

17 añade:

Y nunca más me acordaré de sus pecados y transgresiones.(AN)

18 Pues donde hay remisión de estos, no hay más ofrenda por el pecado.

19 Así que, hermanos, teniendo libertad para entrar en el Lugar Santísimo por la sangre de Jesucristo, 20 por el camino nuevo y vivo que él nos abrió a través del velo, esto es, de su carne, 21 y teniendo un gran sacerdote sobre la casa de Dios, 22 acerquémonos con corazón sincero, en plena certidumbre de fe, purificados los corazones(AO) de mala conciencia, y lavados los cuerpos con agua pura.(AP) 23 Mantengamos firme, sin fluctuar, la profesión de nuestra esperanza, porque fiel es el que prometió. 24 Y considerémonos unos a otros para estimularnos al amor y a las buenas obras; 25 no dejando de congregarnos, como algunos tienen por costumbre, sino exhortándonos; y tanto más, cuanto veis que aquel día se acerca.
