The Promise of Rest
4 Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, (A)let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. 2 For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, [a]not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. 3 For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said:
(B)“So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest,’ ”
although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4 For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: (C)“And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”; 5 and again in this place: (D)“They shall not enter My rest.”
6 Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, 7 again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said:
(E)“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”
8 For if [b]Joshua had (F)given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. 9 There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.
The Word Discovers Our Condition
11 (G)Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is (H)living and powerful, and (I)sharper than any (J)two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is (K)a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 (L)And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are (M)naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
Our Compassionate High Priest
14 Seeing then that we have a great (N)High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, (O)let us hold fast our confession. 15 For (P)we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but (Q)was in all points tempted as we are, (R)yet without sin. 16 (S)Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

De rust die God geeft
4 Zorg er dus voor dat jullie wél die rust binnengaan. Zorg ervoor dat het niet lijkt alsof jullie achterblijven. Want de belofte dat we in Gods rust kunnen binnengaan, bestaat nog steeds. 2 Het zit namelijk zo: Eerst is het goede nieuws aan hén verteld. Maar ze hebben er niets aan gehad, omdat ze het niet geloofden. Nu is het goede nieuws ook aan óns verteld. 3 Maar wíj hebben het geloofd, en daarom gaan wij die rust wél binnen. Want tegen hen die níet geloofden, heeft God gezegd: "Daarom heb Ik in mijn boosheid gezworen: 'Nooit zullen zij mijn rust binnengaan.' " En toch ligt zijn plan om hun die rust te geven al klaar vanaf het moment dat Hij de aarde maakte. 4 Want God heeft ergens van de zevende dag gezegd: "God rustte op de zevende dag van al zijn werk." 5 Maar ergens anders: "Zíj zullen nooit mijn rust binnengaan." 6 Toch zijn er dus mensen die wél die rust kunnen binnengaan. Want dat is wat God had beloofd. Maar de mensen die het goede nieuws het eerst hebben gehoord, zijn die rust niet binnen gegaan. En dat kwam door hun ongehoorzaamheid.
7 Daarom geeft God de mensen een nieuwe kans. En Hij geeft die kans vandaag. Want veel later zegt Hij door David in de Psalmen, zoals hierboven staat: "Als jullie Mij vandaag horen spreken, wees dan niet koppig en ongehoorzaam." 8 Jozua heeft hen kennelijk niet in Gods rust binnengebracht.[a] Want dan zou God later niet hebben gezegd dat 'vandaag' de tijd is gekomen om Gods rust binnen te gaan. 9 Er bestaat dus nog steeds een belofte van rust voor het volk van God. 10 Want wie Gods rust is binnen gegaan, rust zelf ook van zijn werk, net zoals God rustte van zijn werk. 11 We moeten dus goed ons best doen om die rust binnen te gaan. Want als we ongehoorzaam zijn, zullen we die rust mislopen. Net zoals het volk Israël die rust misliep door zijn ongehoorzaamheid.
12 Want het woord van God is vol leven en kracht. En het is scherper dan het scherpste zwaard. Het dringt zó diep in ons door, dat het ziel en geest van elkaar kan scheiden. Het laat ons zien wat er in ons is, al zit het nóg zo diep verborgen.[b] Het brengt onze diepst verborgen gedachten en plannen aan het licht. 13 Niemand kan zich voor God verbergen. Alles wat we zijn en doen, is zichtbaar voor God. En we zullen tegenover Hem verantwoordelijk zijn voor alles wat we hebben gedaan.
Jezus is een betere Hogepriester dan een aardse hogepriester
14 Maar wij hebben dus een machtige Hogepriester. Hij is de hoogste hemel binnen gegaan. Die Hogepriester is Jezus, de Zoon van God. Aan dat geloof moeten we vasthouden. 15 We hebben een Hogepriester die ons kan begrijpen als we zwak zijn. Want we hebben een Hogepriester die op dezelfde manier als wij met het kwaad te maken heeft gekregen. Maar Híj werd nooit ongehoorzaam aan God. 16 Daarom mogen we altijd vol vertrouwen naar Gods troon komen. God verlangt ernaar om ons te vergeven. Daarom zullen we van Hem vergeving krijgen wanneer we verkeerd hebben gedaan. Want Hij zal altijd goed en vriendelijk voor ons zijn. Hij zal ons op het juiste moment te hulp komen. (lees verder)

4 Por tanto, temamos, no sea que permaneciendo aún la[a] promesa de entrar en Su reposo[b], alguno de ustedes parezca no haberlo alcanzado(A). 2 Porque en verdad, a nosotros se nos ha anunciado las buenas nuevas, como también a ellos. Pero la palabra que ellos oyeron[c] no les aprovechó por no ir acompañada por la fe en[d] los que la oyeron(B). 3 Porque los que hemos creído entramos en ese reposo, tal como Él ha dicho:
«Como juré en Mi ira:
“No entrarán en Mi reposo(C)”»,
aunque las obras de Él estaban acabadas desde la fundación del mundo(D).
4 Porque así ha dicho en cierto lugar(E) acerca del séptimo día: «Y Dios reposó en el séptimo día de todas Sus obras(F)»; 5 y otra vez en este pasaje: «No entrarán en Mi reposo(G)». 6 Por tanto, puesto que todavía falta que algunos entren en él, y aquellos a quienes antes se les anunció las buenas nuevas no entraron por causa de su desobediencia[e](H),
7 Dios otra vez fija un día: Hoy. Diciendo por medio de[f] David después de mucho tiempo, como se ha dicho antes:
«Si ustedes oyen hoy Su voz,
No endurezcan sus corazones(I)».
8 Porque si Josué[g] les hubiera dado reposo(J), Dios no habría hablado de otro día después de ese. 9 Queda, por tanto, un reposo sagrado para el pueblo de Dios.
10 Pues el que ha entrado a Su reposo[h], él mismo ha reposado de sus obras(K), como Dios reposó de las Suyas(L). 11 Por tanto, esforcémonos por entrar en ese reposo, no sea que alguien caiga siguiendo el mismo ejemplo(M) de desobediencia(N).
Poder de la palabra de Dios
12 Porque la palabra de Dios(O) es viva(P) y eficaz(Q), y más cortante que cualquier espada de dos filos(R). Penetra hasta la división del alma y del espíritu(S), de las coyunturas y los tuétanos, y es poderosa para discernir[i] los pensamientos y las intenciones del corazón(T). 13 No hay cosa creada oculta a Su vista[j](U), sino que todas las cosas están al descubierto[k] y desnudas(V) ante los ojos de Aquel a quien tenemos que dar cuenta.
Jesús, el gran Sumo Sacerdote
14 Teniendo, pues, un gran Sumo Sacerdote(W) que trascendió[l](X) los cielos, Jesús, el Hijo de Dios(Y), retengamos nuestra fe[m](Z). 15 Porque no tenemos un Sumo Sacerdote(AA) que no pueda compadecerse de nuestras flaquezas, sino Uno que ha sido tentado en todo como nosotros(AB), pero sin pecado(AC). 16 Por tanto, acerquémonos(AD) con confianza(AE) al trono de la gracia para que recibamos misericordia, y hallemos gracia para la ayuda oportuna.
