Gods Zoon is belangrijker dan de engelen (vervolg)
2 Daarom moeten we ons houden aan wat we hebben gehoord. Anders komen we verkeerd uit. 2 Let op: de boodschap die door engelen aan de mensen was gegeven (namelijk de wet van Mozes), moest worden gehoorzaamd. Wie dat niet deed, werd streng gestraft. 3 Nu heeft de Heer ons Zélf het goede nieuws verteld. Dan kunnen jullie wel begrijpen dat er een nog veel zwaardere straf volgt, als we dáár niet aan gehoorzamen. En andere mensen die het goede nieuws van Hem hebben gehoord, hebben ons laten zien dat dat nieuws de waarheid is. 4 Ook God Zelf laat zien dat het de waarheid is. Namelijk door de wonderen die Hij doet, en doordat Hij de gaven van de Heilige Geest geeft.[a] Hij geeft die gaven aan wie Hij wil en hoe Hij wil.
Jezus werd mens om mensen te kunnen redden
5 Wij spreken over een wereld die nog komt. Over die wereld laat God niet de engelen heersen, maar een mens. 6 Want iemand heeft ergens gezegd: "Hoe kan het dat U aan de mens denkt? Hoe kan het dat U Zich met hem bezighoudt? 7 U heeft hem een iets lagere plaats gegeven dan de engelen. Maar U heeft hem ook alle eer en macht en majesteit gegeven. 8 En U laat hem over alles heersen." Als Hij 'alles' zegt, dan bedoelt Hij ook echt álles. Toch zien we nu niet dat de mensen over alles heersen. 9 Maar we zien wel Jezus. Hij had voor een korte tijd een lagere plaats gekregen dan de engelen, omdat Hij moest sterven. Maar daarna kreeg Hij alle eer en macht en majesteit.[b] Want God liet zijn Zoon in onze plaats sterven. Hij nam zo onze straf voor al onze ongehoorzaamheid, en legde die op zijn Zoon. Dat deed Hij omdat Hij zoveel van ons houdt.
10 Het was juist en goed dat God (die alle dingen voor Zichzelf en door Zichzelf heeft gemaakt) Jezus heeft laten lijden. Want alleen zó zou Jezus helemaal gelijk zijn aan de mensen. En Jezus is de enige door wie de mensen gered kunnen worden. Zo kon God daarna zijn eigen hemelse macht en majesteit aan heel veel zonen en dochters uitdelen. 11 Door Jezus kunnen de mensen bij God horen. Jezus én de mensen die bij God horen, zijn allebei uit God geboren. Daarom schaamt Jezus Zich er niet voor om de mensen zijn broeders en zusters te noemen. 12 Jezus zegt namelijk: "Ik zal tegen mijn broeders over U spreken. Als we bij elkaar komen, zal Ik U met mijn liederen prijzen." 13 En Hij zegt ook: "Ik zal op God vertrouwen." En ook: "Hier ben Ik, met de kinderen die God Mij heeft gegeven."
14 Die kinderen zijn van vlees en bloed. Daarom is ook Jezus een mens van vlees en bloed geworden. Zo kon Jezus door zijn dood de duivel zijn macht afnemen. De duivel heeft niet langer de macht over de dood. 15 En zo kon Hij alle mensen bevrijden die hun leven lang slaven van het kwaad waren door hun angst voor de dood. 16 Want Jezus ging niet de ongehoorzame engelen redden, maar Hij ging het ongehoorzame volk van Abraham redden. 17 Daarom moest Jezus in alles helemaal gelijk worden aan de mensen. Alleen zó kon Hij een trouw Hogepriester worden voor God, een Hogepriester die de mensen helemaal begrijpt.[c] En zo kon Hij de mensen hun ongehoorzaamheid aan God vergeven. 18 Want Jezus heeft Zelf óók geleden toen de duivel probeerde Hem ongehoorzaam aan God te maken. Daardoor kan Hij de mensen te hulp komen als hun dat ook gebeurt.

Listen to the Son’s message
2 This is why it’s necessary for us to pay more attention to what we have heard, or else we may drift away from it. 2 If the message that was spoken by angels was reliable, and every offense and act of disobedience received an appropriate consequence, 3 how will we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? It was first announced through the Lord, and then it was confirmed by those who heard him. 4 God also vouched for their message with signs, amazing things, various miracles, and gifts from the Holy Spirit, which were handed out the way he wanted.
Jesus is the enthroned human being
5 God didn’t put the world that is coming (the world we are talking about) under the angels’ control. 6 Instead, someone declared somewhere,
What is humanity that you think about them?
Or what are the human beings that you care about them?
7 For a while you made them lower than angels.
You crowned the human beings with glory and honor.
8 You put everything under their control.[a]
When he puts everything under their control, he doesn’t leave anything out of control. But right now, we don’t see everything under their control yet. 9 However, we do see the one who was made lower in order than the angels for a little while—it’s Jesus! He’s the one who is now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of his death. He suffered death so that he could taste death for everyone through God’s grace.
Qualified to be a high priest
10 It was appropriate for God, for whom and through whom everything exists, to use experiences of suffering to make perfect the pioneer of salvation. This salvation belongs to many sons and daughters whom he’s leading to glory. 11 This is because the one who makes people holy and the people who are being made holy all come from one source. That is why Jesus isn’t ashamed to call them brothers and sisters when he says,
12 I will publicly announce your name to my brothers and sisters.
I will praise you in the middle of the assembly.[b]
13 He also says,
I will rely on him.[c]
And also,
Here I am with the children whom God has given to me.[d]
14 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, he also shared the same things in the same way. He did this to destroy the one who holds the power over death—the devil—by dying. 15 He set free those who were held in slavery their entire lives by their fear of death. 16 Of course, he isn’t trying to help angels, but rather he’s helping Abraham’s descendants. 17 Therefore, he had to be made like his brothers and sisters in every way. This was so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in things relating to God, in order to wipe away the sins of the people. 18 He’s able to help those who are being tempted, since he himself experienced suffering when he was tempted.

Warning to Pay Attention
2 We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.(A) 2 For since the message spoken(B) through angels(C) was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment,(D) 3 how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation?(E) This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord,(F) was confirmed to us by those who heard him.(G) 4 God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles,(H) and by gifts of the Holy Spirit(I) distributed according to his will.(J)
Jesus Made Fully Human
5 It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6 But there is a place where someone(K) has testified:
“What is mankind that you are mindful of them,
a son of man that you care for him?(L)
7 You made them a little[a] lower than the angels;
you crowned them with glory and honor
8 and put everything under their feet.”[b][c](M)
In putting everything under them,[d] God left nothing that is not subject to them.[e] Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them.[f] 9 But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor(N) because he suffered death,(O) so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.(P)
10 In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists,(Q) should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered.(R) 11 Both the one who makes people holy(S) and those who are made holy(T) are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.[g](U) 12 He says,
“I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters;
in the assembly I will sing your praises.”[h](V)
13 And again,
And again he says,
14 Since the children have flesh and blood,(Y) he too shared in their humanity(Z) so that by his death he might break the power(AA) of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil(AB)— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear(AC) of death. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants.(AD) 17 For this reason he had to be made like them,[k](AE) fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful(AF) and faithful high priest(AG) in service to God,(AH) and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.(AI) 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.(AJ)

2 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
5 For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.
6 But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man that thou visitest him?
7 Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:

15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.
17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.
