It is for discipline that you endure; (A)God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline, (B)of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Furthermore, we had [a]earthly fathers to discipline us, and we (C)respected them; shall we not much more be subject to (D)the Father of [b]spirits, and (E)live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, (F)so that we may share His holiness. 11 (G)For the moment, all discipline seems not to be pleasant, but painful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterward it yields the (H)peaceful fruit of righteousness.

(A)If[a] you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what (B)son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, (C)of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to (D)the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, (E)that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no [b]chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields (F)the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
