³⁹ But we are not among those who shrink back and so are lost but among those who have faith and so preserve our souls.^(A)

⁵ Who is it who conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?^(A)

⁵ who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.^(A)

¹⁶ The one who believes and is baptized will be saved, but the one who does not believe will be condemned.

¹⁶ If you see your brother or sister committing what is not a deadly sin, you will ask, and God^[a] will give life to such a one—to those whose sin is not deadly. There is sin that is deadly; I do not say that you should pray about that.^(A)

¹² so that all who have not believed the truth but took pleasure in unrighteousness will be condemned.^(A)

Chosen for Salvation

¹³ But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits^[a] for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth.^{(B) 14} For this purpose he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.^(C)

¹¹ “I regret that I made Saul king, for he has turned back from following me and has not carried out my commands.” Samuel was angry, and he cried out to the Lord all night.^(A)

⁷ But by the same word the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the godless.^(A)

The Meaning of Faith

11 Now faith is the assurance^[a] of things hoped for, the conviction^[b] of things not seen.^(A)

⁹ For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,^(A)
