A Call to Persevere in Faith

¹⁹Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence^(A) to enter the Most Holy Place^(B) by the blood of Jesus, ²⁰by a new and living way^(C) opened for us through the curtain,^(D) that is, his body, ²¹and since we have a great priest^(E) over the house of God,^(F) ²²let us draw near to God^(G) with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings,^(H) having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience^(I) and having our bodies washed with pure water.^(J) ²³Let us hold unswervingly to the hope^(K) we profess,^(L) for he who promised is faithful.^(M) ²⁴And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,^(N) ²⁵not giving up meeting together,^(O) as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another^(P)—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.^(Q)

²⁶If we deliberately keep on sinning^(R) after we have received the knowledge of the truth,^(S) no sacrifice for sins is left, ²⁷but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire^(T) that will consume the enemies of God. ²⁸Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.^(U) ²⁹How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God^(V) underfoot,^(W) who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant^(X) that sanctified them,^(Y) and who has insulted the Spirit^(Z) of grace?^(AA) ³⁰For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”^[a]^(AB) and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”^[b]^(AC) ³¹It is a dreadful thing^(AD) to fall into the hands^(AE) of the living God.^(AF)

³²Remember those earlier days after you had received the light,^(AG) when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering.^(AH) ³³Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution;^(AI) at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated.^(AJ) ³⁴You suffered along with those in prison^(AK) and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.^(AL) ³⁵So do not throw away your confidence;^(AM) it will be richly rewarded.

³⁶You need to persevere^(AN) so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.^(AO) ³⁷For,

“In just a little while,
he who is coming^(AP) will come
and will not delay.”^[c]^(AQ)

³⁸And,

“But my righteous^[d] one will live by faith.^(AR)
And I take no pleasure
in the one who shrinks back.”^[e]^(AS)

³⁹But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

Psalm 144

Of David.

¹Praise be to the Lord my Rock,^(A)
    who trains my hands for war,
    my fingers for battle.
²He is my loving God and my fortress,^(B)
    my stronghold^(C) and my deliverer,
my shield,^(D) in whom I take refuge,
    who subdues peoples^[a]^(E) under me.

³Lord, what are human beings^(F) that you care for them,
mere mortals that you think of them?
⁴They are like a breath;^(G)
their days are like a fleeting shadow.^(H)

⁵Part your heavens,^(I) Lord, and come down;^(J)
    touch the mountains, so that they smoke.^(K)
⁶Send forth lightning^(L) and scatter^(M) the enemy;
    shoot your arrows^(N) and rout them.
⁷Reach down your hand from on high;^(O)
    deliver me and rescue me^(P)
from the mighty waters,^(Q)
    from the hands of foreigners^(R)
⁸whose mouths are full of lies,^(S)
    whose right hands^(T) are deceitful.^(U)

⁹I will sing a new song^(V) to you, my God;
on the ten-stringed lyre^(W) I will make music to you,
¹⁰to the One who gives victory to kings,^(X)
who delivers his servant David.^(Y)

From the deadly sword^(Z) ¹¹deliver me;
rescue me^(AA) from the hands of foreigners^(AB)
whose mouths are full of lies,^(AC)
whose right hands are deceitful.^(AD)

¹²Then our sons in their youth
    will be like well-nurtured plants,^(AE)
and our daughters will be like pillars^(AF)
    carved to adorn a palace.
¹³Our barns will be filled^(AG)
    with every kind of provision.
Our sheep will increase by thousands,
    by tens of thousands in our fields;
¹⁴    our oxen^(AH) will draw heavy loads.^[b]
There will be no breaching of walls,^(AI)
    no going into captivity,
    no cry of distress in our streets.^(AJ)
¹⁵Blessed is the people^(AK) of whom this is true;
    blessed is the people whose God is the Lord.
