Better Things for You

But, (A)beloved, we are convinced of better things regarding you, and things that [a]accompany salvation, even though we are speaking in this way. 10 For (B)God is not unjust so as to forget (C)your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, by having (D)served and by still serving the [b]saints. 11 And we desire that each one of you demonstrate the same diligence [c]so as to realize the (E)full assurance of (F)hope until the end, 12 so that you will not be sluggish, but (G)imitators of those who through (H)faith and endurance (I)inherit the promises.

13 For (J)when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear an oath by no one greater, He (K)swore by Himself, 14 saying, “(L)indeed I will greatly bless you and I will greatly multiply you.” 15 And so, (M)having patiently waited, he obtained the promise. 16 (N)For people swear an oath by [d]one greater than themselves, and with them (O)an oath serving as confirmation is an end of every dispute. 17 [e]In the same way God, desiring even more to demonstrate to (P)the heirs of the promise [f](Q)the fact that His purpose is unchangeable, [g]confirmed it with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things in which (R)it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to hold firmly to (S)the hope set before us. 19 [h]This (T)hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and reliable and one which (U)enters [i]within the veil, 20 (V)where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a (W)high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

Even though we speak like this, dear friends,(A) we are convinced of better things in your case—the things that have to do with salvation. 10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.(B) 11 We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope(C) for may be fully realized. 12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate(D) those who through faith and patience(E) inherit what has been promised.(F)

The Certainty of God’s Promise

13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,(G) 14 saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.”[a](H) 15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.(I)

16 People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.(J) 17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging(K) nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised,(L) he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie,(M) we who have fled to take hold of the hope(N) set before us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,(O) 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.(P) He has become a high priest(Q) forever, in the order of Melchizedek.(R)
