As He also says in another place:

(A)“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek”;

who, in the days of His flesh, when He had (B)offered up prayers and supplications, (C)with vehement cries and tears to Him (D)who was able to save Him from death, and was heard (E)because of His godly fear, though He was a Son, yet He learned (F)obedience by the things which He suffered. And (G)having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, 10 called by God as High Priest (H)“according to the order of Melchizedek,”

And he says in another place,

During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions(C) with fervent cries and tears(D) to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard(E) because of his reverent submission.(F) Son(G) though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered(H) and, once made perfect,(I) he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him 10 and was designated by God to be high priest(J) in the order of Melchizedek.(K)

Need for a New Priesthood(A)

11 (B)Therefore, if perfection were through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be called according to the order of Aaron? 12 For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law. 13 For He of whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no man has [a]officiated at the altar.

14 For it is evident that (C)our Lord arose from (D)Judah, of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning [b]priesthood. 15 And it is yet far more evident if, in the likeness of Melchizedek, there arises another priest 16 who has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life. 17 For [c]He testifies:

(E)“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”

18 For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of (F)its weakness and unprofitableness, 19 for (G)the law made nothing [d]perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of (H)a better hope, through which (I)we draw near to God.

Greatness of the New Priest

20 And inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath 21 (for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him:

(J)“The Lord has sworn
And will not relent,
‘You are a priest [e]forever
According to the order of Melchizedek’ ”),

Jesus Like Melchizedek

11 If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood—and indeed the law given to the people(A) established that priesthood—why was there still need for another priest to come,(B) one in the order of Melchizedek,(C) not in the order of Aaron? 12 For when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also. 13 He of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe,(D) and no one from that tribe has ever served at the altar.(E) 14 For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah,(F) and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. 15 And what we have said is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears, 16 one who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. 17 For it is declared:

“You are a priest forever,
    in the order of Melchizedek.”[a](G)

18 The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless(H) 19 (for the law made nothing perfect),(I) and a better hope(J) is introduced, by which we draw near to God.(K)

20 And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath, 21 but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him:

“The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind:(L)
    ‘You are a priest forever.’”[b](M)
