Failure of the Wilderness Wanderers

^16 (A)For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? ¹⁷ Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, ^(B)whose corpses fell in the wilderness? ¹⁸ And ^(C)to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? ¹⁹ So we see that they could not enter in because of ^(D)unbelief.

The Promise of Rest

4 Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, ^(E)let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. ² For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, ^[a]not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. ³ For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said:

although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

¹⁶ Then Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, “Men of Israel, and ^(A)you who fear God, listen: ¹⁷ The God of this people ^[a]Israel ^(B)chose our fathers, and exalted the people ^(C)when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with ^[b]an uplifted arm He ^(D)brought them out of it.

²⁶ “Men and brethren, sons of the ^[a]family of Abraham, and ^(A)those among you who fear God, ^(B)to you the ^[b]word of this salvation has been sent. ²⁷ For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, ^(C)because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him. ^28 (D)And though they found no cause for death in Him, they asked Pilate that He should be put to death. ^29 (E)Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, ^(F)they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb. ^30 (G)But God raised Him from the dead. ^31 (H)He was seen for many days by those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are His witnesses to the people. ³² And we declare to you glad tidings—^(I)that promise which was made to the fathers.
