14 Since the children have flesh and blood,(A) he too shared in their humanity(B) so that by his death he might break the power(C) of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil(D) 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear(E) of death. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants.(F) 17 For this reason he had to be made like them,[a](G) fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful(H) and faithful high priest(I) in service to God,(J) and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.(K) 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.(L)

Jesus Greater Than Moses

Therefore, holy brothers and sisters,(M) who share in the heavenly calling,(N) fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge(O) as our apostle and high priest.(P) He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house.(Q) Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses,(R) just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.(S) “Moses was faithful as a servant(T) in all God’s house,”[b](U) bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. But Christ is faithful as the Son(V) over God’s house. And we are his house,(W) if indeed we hold firmly(X) to our confidence and the hope(Y) in which we glory.

Warning Against Unbelief

So, as the Holy Spirit says:(Z)

“Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts(AA)
as you did in the rebellion,
    during the time of testing in the wilderness,
where your ancestors tested and tried me,
    though for forty years they saw what I did.(AB)
10 That is why I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray,
    and they have not known my ways.’

Footnotes

  1. Hebrews 2:17 Or like his brothers
  2. Hebrews 3:5 Num. 12:7

14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;

Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.

For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.

For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.

And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;

But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.

Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,

Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.

10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.
