You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your[a] blood as you[b] struggle against sin. And have you completely forgotten the exhortation which instructs you as sons?

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
    or give up when you are corrected by him.
For the Lord disciplines the one whom he loves,
    and punishes every son whom he accepts.”[c]

God Disciplines His Children

In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.(A) And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
    and do not lose heart(B) when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,(C)
    and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”[a](D)
