35 Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has (A)a great reward. 36 For (B)you have need of endurance, so that (C)when you have done the will of God you may (D)receive what is promised. 37 For,

(E)“Yet a little while,
    and (F)the coming one will come and will not delay;
38 (G)but my righteous one shall live by faith,
    and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.”

39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

By Faith

11 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of (H)things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by (I)the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of (J)things that are visible.

By faith (K)Abel offered to God (L)a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And (M)through his faith, though he died, he (N)still speaks. By faith (O)Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God (P)must believe that he exists and (Q)that he rewards those who seek him. By faith (R)Noah, being warned by God concerning (S)events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of (T)the righteousness that comes by faith.

By faith (U)Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place (V)that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in (W)the land of promise, as in a foreign land, (X)living in tents (Y)with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to (Z)the city that has (AA)foundations, (AB)whose designer and builder is God. 11 By faith (AC)Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered (AD)him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore from one man, and (AE)him as good as dead, were born descendants (AF)as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.

13 These all died in faith, (AG)not having received the things promised, but (AH)having seen them and greeted them from afar, and (AI)having acknowledged that they were (AJ)strangers and exiles on the earth.

35 So do not throw away your confidence;(A) it will be richly rewarded.

36 You need to persevere(B) so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.(C) 37 For,

“In just a little while,
he who is coming(D) will come
    and will not delay.”[a](E)

38 And,

“But my righteous[b] one will live by faith.(F)
    And I take no pleasure
in the one who shrinks back.”[c](G)

39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

Faith in Action

11 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for(H) and assurance about what we do not see.(I) This is what the ancients were commended for.(J)

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command,(K) so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended(L) as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings.(M) And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.(N)

By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.”[d](O) For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him(P) must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen,(Q) in holy fear built an ark(R) to save his family.(S) By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.(T)

By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance,(U) obeyed and went,(V) even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land(W) like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents,(X) as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.(Y) 10 For he was looking forward to the city(Z) with foundations,(AA) whose architect and builder is God.(AB) 11 And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age,(AC) was enabled to bear children(AD) because she[e] considered him faithful(AE) who had made the promise. 12 And so from this one man, and he as good as dead,(AF) came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.(AG)

13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised;(AH) they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance,(AI) admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth.(AJ)
