31 (A)It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32 But recall the former days when, after (B)you were enlightened, you endured (C)a hard struggle with sufferings, 33 sometimes being (D)publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. 34 For (E)you had compassion on those in prison, and (F)you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had (G)a better possession and an abiding one. 35 Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has (H)a great reward. 36 For (I)you have need of endurance, so that (J)when you have done the will of God you may (K)receive what is promised. 37 For,

(L)“Yet a little while,
    and (M)the coming one will come and will not delay;
38 (N)but my righteous one shall live by faith,
    and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.”

39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

By Faith

11 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of (O)things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by (P)the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of (Q)things that are visible.

By faith (R)Abel offered to God (S)a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And (T)through his faith, though he died, he (U)still speaks. By faith (V)Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God (W)must believe that he exists and (X)that he rewards those who seek him. By faith (Y)Noah, being warned by God concerning (Z)events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of (AA)the righteousness that comes by faith.

31 It is a dreadful thing(A) to fall into the hands(B) of the living God.(C)

32 Remember those earlier days after you had received the light,(D) when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering.(E) 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution;(F) at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated.(G) 34 You suffered along with those in prison(H) and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.(I) 35 So do not throw away your confidence;(J) it will be richly rewarded.

36 You need to persevere(K) so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.(L) 37 For,

“In just a little while,
he who is coming(M) will come
    and will not delay.”[a](N)

38 And,

“But my righteous[b] one will live by faith.(O)
    And I take no pleasure
in the one who shrinks back.”[c](P)

39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

Faith in Action

11 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for(Q) and assurance about what we do not see.(R) This is what the ancients were commended for.(S)

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command,(T) so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended(U) as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings.(V) And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.(W)

By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.”[d](X) For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him(Y) must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen,(Z) in holy fear built an ark(AA) to save his family.(AB) By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.(AC)
