5 Dios elige a los jefes de los sacerdotes para que ayuden al pueblo, y para que presenten las ofrendas y sacrificios, para que Dios los perdone. 2 Y como a esos sacerdotes también les resulta difícil obedecer a Dios, pueden mostrarse pacientes con los ignorantes y pecadores. 3 Por eso tienen que presentar ofrendas y sacrificios, para que Dios perdone los pecados del pueblo, y también los de ellos. 4 Pero nadie puede ser jefe de los sacerdotes sólo porque así lo quiere, sino que Dios es quien lo elige y le da ese honor. Así lo hizo Dios cuando escogió a Aarón como jefe de los sacerdotes.
5 Cristo no llegó a ser Jefe de sacerdotes porque así lo quiso, sino que Dios lo eligió y le dio ese honor. Fue Dios quien le dijo:
«Tú eres mi Hijo;
desde hoy soy tu padre.»
6 En otra parte de la Biblia también le dijo:
«Tú eres sacerdote para siempre,
como lo fue Melquisedec.»
7 Cuando Cristo estuvo aquí en el mundo, oró mucho a Dios, y con lágrimas le rogó que lo librara de la muerte, pues Dios tenía poder para hacerlo. Y como Cristo siempre fue obediente, Dios contestó su oración. 8 Aunque él era Hijo de Dios, por medio del sufrimiento aprendió lo que significa obedecer siempre a Dios. 9 Así, una vez que Cristo hizo todo lo que Dios le mandó, se convirtió en el salvador que da vida eterna a todos los que lo obedecen. 10 Por eso Dios también lo nombró Jefe de sacerdotes, como lo fue Melquisedec.

11 Hay mucho más que decir acerca de este asunto, pero no es fácil explicarles a ustedes todo, porque les cuesta mucho entender. 12 Con el tiempo que llevan de haber creído en la buena noticia, ya deberían ser maestros. Sin embargo, todavía necesitan que se les expliquen las enseñanzas más sencillas acerca de Dios. Parecen niños pequeños, que no pueden comer alimentos sólidos, sino que sólo toman leche. 13 Son como niños recién nacidos, que aún no pueden distinguir entre lo bueno y lo malo. 14 En cambio, los que sí saben distinguir entre lo bueno y lo malo, y están acostumbrados a hacerlo, son como la gente adulta, que ya puede comer alimentos sólidos.

A High Priest must be duly qualified and divinely appointed
5 1-3 Note that when a man is chosen as High Priest he is appointed on men’s behalf as their representative in the things of God—he offers gifts to God and makes the necessary sacrifices for sins on behalf of his fellow-men. He must be able to deal sympathetically with the ignorant and foolish because he realises that he is himself prone to human weakness. This naturally means that the offering which he makes for sin is made on his own personal behalf as well as on behalf of those whom he represents.
4 Note also that nobody chooses for himself the honour of being a High Priest, but he is called by God to the work, as was Aaron, the first High Priest in ancient times.
5 Thus we see that the Christ did not choose for himself the glory of being High Priest, but he was honoured by the one who said: ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you’.
6 And he says in another passage: ‘You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek’.
Christ, the perfect High Priest, was the perfect Son
7-10 Christ, in the days when he was a man on earth, appealed to the one who could save him from death in desperate prayer and the agony of tears. His prayers were heard; he was freed from his shrinking from death but, Son though he was, he had to prove the meaning of obedience through all that he suffered. Then, when he had been proved the perfect Son, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who should obey him, being now recognised by God himself as High Priest “after the order of Melchizedek.
There is much food for thought here—but only for the mature Christian
11-14 There is a great deal that we should like to say about this high priesthood, but it is not easy to explain to you since you seem so slow to grasp spiritual truth. At a time when you should be teaching others, you need teachers yourselves to repeat to you the ABC of God’s Revelation to men. You have become people who need a milk diet and cannot face solid food! For anyone who continues to live on “milk” is obviously immature—he simply has not grown up. “Solid food” is only for the adult, that is, for the man who has developed by experience his power to discriminate between what is good and bad for him.

5 Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God,(A) to offer gifts and sacrifices(B) for sins.(C) 2 He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray,(D) since he himself is subject to weakness.(E) 3 This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.(F) 4 And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.(G)
5 In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory(H) of becoming a high priest.(I) But God said(J) to him,
6 And he says in another place,
7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions(N) with fervent cries and tears(O) to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard(P) because of his reverent submission.(Q) 8 Son(R) though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered(S) 9 and, once made perfect,(T) he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him 10 and was designated by God to be high priest(U) in the order of Melchizedek.(V)
Warning Against Falling Away(W)
11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths(X) of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!(Y) 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant,(Z) is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature,(AA) who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.(AB)

2 Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.
3 And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.
4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.
5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
10 Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.
11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
