La fe
11 Es, pues, la fe la certeza de lo que se espera, la convicción de lo que no se ve. 2 Porque por ella alcanzaron buen testimonio los antiguos. 3 Por la fe entendemos haber sido constituido el universo por la palabra de Dios,(A) de modo que lo que se ve fue hecho de lo que no se veía.
4 Por la fe Abel ofreció a Dios más excelente sacrificio que Caín, por lo cual alcanzó testimonio de que era justo, dando Dios testimonio de sus ofrendas; y muerto, aún habla por ella.(B) 5 Por la fe Enoc fue traspuesto para no ver muerte, y no fue hallado, porque lo traspuso Dios; y antes que fuese traspuesto, tuvo testimonio de haber agradado a Dios.(C) 6 Pero sin fe es imposible agradar a Dios; porque es necesario que el que se acerca a Dios crea que le hay, y que es galardonador de los que le buscan. 7 Por la fe Noé, cuando fue advertido por Dios acerca de cosas que aún no se veían, con temor preparó el arca en que su casa se salvase;(D) y por esa fe condenó al mundo, y fue hecho heredero de la justicia que viene por la fe.
8 Por la fe Abraham, siendo llamado, obedeció para salir al lugar que había de recibir como herencia; y salió sin saber a dónde iba.(E) 9 Por la fe habitó como extranjero en la tierra prometida como en tierra ajena, morando en tiendas con Isaac y Jacob, coherederos de la misma promesa;(F) 10 porque esperaba la ciudad que tiene fundamentos, cuyo arquitecto y constructor es Dios. 11 Por la fe también la misma Sara, siendo estéril, recibió fuerza para concebir; y dio a luz aun fuera del tiempo de la edad,(G) porque creyó que era fiel quien lo había prometido. 12 Por lo cual también, de uno, y ese ya casi muerto, salieron como las estrellas del cielo en multitud,(H) y como la arena innumerable que está a la orilla del mar.(I)
13 Conforme a la fe murieron todos estos sin haber recibido lo prometido, sino mirándolo de lejos, y creyéndolo, y saludándolo, y confesando que eran extranjeros y peregrinos sobre la tierra.(J) 14 Porque los que esto dicen, claramente dan a entender que buscan una patria; 15 pues si hubiesen estado pensando en aquella de donde salieron, ciertamente tenían tiempo de volver. 16 Pero anhelaban una mejor, esto es, celestial; por lo cual Dios no se avergüenza de llamarse Dios de ellos; porque les ha preparado una ciudad.
17 Por la fe Abraham, cuando fue probado, ofreció a Isaac; y el que había recibido las promesas ofrecía su unigénito,(K) 18 habiéndosele dicho: En Isaac te será llamada descendencia;(L) 19 pensando que Dios es poderoso para levantar aun de entre los muertos, de donde, en sentido figurado, también le volvió a recibir. 20 Por la fe bendijo Isaac a Jacob y a Esaú respecto a cosas venideras.(M) 21 Por la fe Jacob, al morir, bendijo a cada uno de los hijos de José, y adoró apoyado sobre el extremo de su bordón.(N) 22 Por la fe José, al morir, mencionó la salida de los hijos de Israel, y dio mandamiento acerca de sus huesos.(O)
23 Por la fe Moisés, cuando nació, fue escondido por sus padres por tres meses,(P) porque le vieron niño hermoso, y no temieron el decreto del rey.(Q) 24 Por la fe Moisés, hecho ya grande, rehusó llamarse hijo de la hija de Faraón,(R) 25 escogiendo antes ser maltratado con el pueblo de Dios, que gozar de los deleites temporales del pecado, 26 teniendo por mayores riquezas el vituperio de Cristo que los tesoros de los egipcios; porque tenía puesta la mirada en el galardón. 27 Por la fe dejó a Egipto,(S) no temiendo la ira del rey; porque se sostuvo como viendo al Invisible. 28 Por la fe celebró la pascua y la aspersión de la sangre, para que el que destruía a los primogénitos no los tocase a ellos.(T)
29 Por la fe pasaron el Mar Rojo como por tierra seca; e intentando los egipcios hacer lo mismo, fueron ahogados.(U) 30 Por la fe cayeron los muros de Jericó después de rodearlos siete días.(V) 31 Por la fe Rahab la ramera no pereció juntamente con los desobedientes,(W) habiendo recibido a los espías en paz.(X)
32 ¿Y qué más digo? Porque el tiempo me faltaría contando de Gedeón,(Y) de Barac,(Z) de Sansón,(AA) de Jefté,(AB) de David,(AC) así como de Samuel(AD) y de los profetas; 33 que por fe conquistaron reinos, hicieron justicia, alcanzaron promesas, taparon bocas de leones,(AE) 34 apagaron fuegos impetuosos,(AF) evitaron filo de espada, sacaron fuerzas de debilidad, se hicieron fuertes en batallas, pusieron en fuga ejércitos extranjeros. 35 Las mujeres recibieron sus muertos mediante resurrección;(AG) mas otros fueron atormentados, no aceptando el rescate, a fin de obtener mejor resurrección. 36 Otros experimentaron vituperios y azotes, y a más de esto prisiones y cárceles.(AH) 37 Fueron apedreados,(AI) aserrados, puestos a prueba, muertos a filo de espada; anduvieron de acá para allá cubiertos de pieles de ovejas y de cabras, pobres, angustiados, maltratados; 38 de los cuales el mundo no era digno; errando por los desiertos, por los montes, por las cuevas y por las cavernas de la tierra.
39 Y todos estos, aunque alcanzaron buen testimonio mediante la fe, no recibieron lo prometido; 40 proveyendo Dios alguna cosa mejor para nosotros, para que no fuesen ellos perfeccionados aparte de nosotros.

论信心
11 信心是对盼望的事有把握，对还没看见的事很确定。 2 古人因有这样的信心而得到了赞许。 3 我们凭信心知道宇宙是借着上帝的话造成的，所以看得见的是从看不见的造出来的。
4 亚伯凭信心向上帝献祭，比该隐所献的更美，蒙了上帝的悦纳，被称为义人。他虽然死了，却仍然借着信心说话。
5 以诺因为信而被接到天上，没有经历死亡。世人找不到他，因为上帝已经把他接走了。其实他在被接之前，已经得到了肯定，是一个蒙上帝喜悦的人。 6 没有信心的人不能得到上帝的喜悦，因为来到上帝面前的人必须相信上帝存在，并相信祂会赏赐一切寻求祂的人。
7 挪亚因为有信心，在上帝指示他未来要发生的事之后，就怀着敬畏的心建造方舟，来救全家的人。他借着信心定了那个世代的罪，并承受了因信而来的义。
8 亚伯拉罕因为有信心，听到上帝的呼召后，就遵命前往他将要承受为产业的地方，但他出发的时候还不知道自己要去哪里。 9 他凭信心像异乡人一样寄居在上帝应许给他的地方。他住在帐篷里，与同受一个应许的以撒和雅各一样。 10 因为他盼望的是一座有根基的城，是由上帝设计、建造的。
11 撒拉过了生育年龄后凭信心仍然得到了孕育后代的能力，因为她认定赐她应许的上帝言出必行。 12 所以，从一个垂暮之年的人生出许多子孙，好像天上的星、海边的沙那么多。

29 以色列人凭信心渡过红海，如履干地，埃及人试图过去，却被海水淹没。 30 以色列人凭信心绕着耶利哥城走了七天，城墙就倒塌了。
31 妓女喇合凭信心善待以色列的探子，没有与那些不顺服的人一同灭亡。
32 我还要再说下去吗？我没有时间一一细说基甸、巴拉、参孙、耶弗他、大卫、撒母耳和众先知的事了。 33 他们凭信心战胜了敌国，行了公义，得到了应许，堵住了狮子的口， 34 熄灭了猛烈的火焰，刀下逃生，由软弱变为刚强，作战勇猛，击退外敌。
35 有些妇女得回了从死里复活的亲人；有些人受尽严刑拷打，仍不肯苟且偷生，为要得到一个复活后更美好的生命。 36 有些人遭受戏弄和鞭打，还有些人遭受捆锁和囚禁。 37 他们被人用石头打死，受威逼利诱[a]，被锯成两截，丧生刀剑之下，披着绵羊和山羊的皮四处奔跑，受尽贫乏、迫害和虐待， 38 在旷野、群山、山洞和地穴中漂流不定。他们是世界不配有的！
39 这些人都因信心而获得赞许，但他们并未得到上帝的应许， 40 因为上帝为我们预备了更美的，要叫他们与我们一同得到才算完美。

11 1-3 Now faith means putting our full confidence in the things we hope for, it means being certain of things we cannot see. It was this kind of faith that won their reputation for the saints of old. And it is after all only by faith that our minds accept as fact that the whole scheme of time and space was created by God’s command—that the world which we can see has come into being through principles which are invisible.
Faith is the distinctive mark of the saints of the old agreement
ABEL
4 It was because of his faith that Abel made a better sacrifice to God than Cain, and he had evidence that God looked upon him as a righteous man, whose gifts he could accept. And though Cain killed him, yet by his faith he still speaks to us today.
ENOCH
5-6 It was because of his faith that Enoch was promoted to the eternal world without experiencing death. He disappeared from this world because God promoted him, and before that happened his reputation was that “he pleased God”. And without faith it is impossible to please him. The man who approaches God must have faith in two things, first that God exists and secondly that it is worth a man’s while to try to find God.
NOAH
7 It was through faith that Noah, on receiving God’s warning of impending disaster, reverently constructed an ark to save his household. This action of faith condemned the unbelief of the rest of the world, and won for Noah the righteousness before God which follows such a faith.
ABRAHAM
8-10 It was by faith that Abraham obeyed the summons to go out to a place which he would eventually possess, and he set out in complete ignorance of his destination. It was faith that kept him journeying like a foreigner through the land of promise, with no more home than the tents which he shared with Isaac and Jacob, co-heirs with him of the promise. For Abraham’s eyes were looking forward to that city with solid foundations of which God himself is both architect and builder.
SARAH
11-12 It was by faith that even Sarah gained the physical vitality to become a mother despite her great age, and she gave birth to a child when far beyond the normal years of child-bearing. She could do this because she believed that the one who had given the promise was utterly trustworthy. So it happened that from one man, who as a potential father was already considered dead, there arose a race “as numerous as the stars”, as “countless as the sands of the sea-shore”.
All the heroes of faith looked forward to their true country
13-16 All these whom we have mentioned maintained their faith but died without actually receiving God’s promises, though they had seen them in the distance, had hailed them as true and were quite convinced of their reality. They freely admitted that they lived on this earth as exiles and foreigners. Men who say that mean, of course, that their eyes are fixed upon their true home-land. If they had meant the particular country they had left behind, they had ample opportunity to return. No, the fact is that they longed for a better country altogether, nothing less than a heavenly one. And because of this faith of theirs, God is not ashamed to be called their God for in sober truth he has prepared for them a city in Heaven.
Abraham’s faith once more
17-19 It was by faith that Abraham, when put to the test, made a sacrifice of Isaac. Yes, the man who had heard God’s promises was prepared to offer up his only son of whom it had been said ‘In Isaac your seed shall be called’. He believed that God could raise his son up, even if he were dead. And he did, in a manner of speaking, receive him back from death.
The faith of Isaac, Jacob and Joseph
20-22 It was by faith that Isaac gave Jacob and Esau his blessing, for his words dealt with what should happen in the future. It was by faith that the dying Jacob blessed each of Joseph’s sons as he bowed in prayer over his staff. It was by faith that Joseph on his death-bed spoke of the exodus of the Israelites, and gave confident orders about the disposal of his own mortal remains.
Moses
23-29 It was by faith that Moses was hidden by his parents for three months after his birth, for they saw that he was an exceptional child and refused to be daunted by the king’s decree that all male children should be drowned. It was also by faith that Moses himself when grown up refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He preferred sharing the burden of God’s people to enjoying the temporary advantages of alliance with a sinful nation. He considered the “reproach of Christ” more precious than all the wealth of Egypt, for he looked steadily at the ultimate, not the immediate, reward. By faith he led the exodus from Egypt; he defied the king’s anger with the strength that came from obedience to the invisible king. By faith Moses kept the first Passover and made the blood-sprinkling, so that the angel of death which killed the first-born should not touch his people. By faith the people walked through the Red Sea as though it were dry land, and the Egyptians who tried to do the same thing were drowned.
Rahab
30-31 It was by faith that the walls of Jericho collapsed, for the people had obeyed God’s command to encircle them for seven days. It was because of her faith that Rahab the prostitute did not share the fate of the disobedient, for she showed her faith in the true God when she welcomed the Israelites sent out to reconnoitre.
The Old Testament is full of examples of faith
32-38 And what other examples shall I give? There is simply not time to continue by telling the stories of Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jeptha; of David, Samuel and the prophets. Through their faith these men conquered kingdoms, ruled in justice and proved the truth of God’s promises. They shut the mouths of lions, they quenched the furious blaze of fire, they escaped from death itself. From being weaklings they became strong men and mighty warriors; they routed whole armies of foreigners. Some returned to their womenfolk from certain death, while others were tortured and refused to be ransomed, because they wanted to deserve a more honourable resurrection in the world to come. Others were exposed to the test of public mockery and flogging, and to the torture of being left bound in prison. They were killed by stoning, by being sawn in two; they were tempted by specious promises of release and then were killed with the sword. Many became refugees with nothing but sheepskins or goatskins to cover them. They lost everything and yet were spurned and ill-treated by a world that was too evil to see their worth. They lived as vagrants in the desert, on the mountains, or in caves or holes in the ground.
39-40 All these won a glowing testimony to their faith, but they did not then and there receive the fulfilment of the promise. God had something better planned for our day, and it was not his plan that they should reach perfection without us.

2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.
3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

33 Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions.
34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
35 Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:
36 And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:
37 They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;
38 (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:
40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

Faith in Action
11 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for(A) and assurance about what we do not see.(B) 2 This is what the ancients were commended for.(C)
3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command,(D) so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
4 By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended(E) as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings.(F) And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.(G)
5 By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.”[a](H) For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. 6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him(I) must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised;(AA) they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance,(AB) admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth.(AC) 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.(AD) 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one.(AE) Therefore God is not ashamed(AF) to be called their God,(AG) for he has prepared a city(AH) for them.
17 By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice.(AI) He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”[c](AJ) 19 Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead,(AK) and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.
20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau in regard to their future.(AL)
21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons,(AM) and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.
22 By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions concerning the burial of his bones.(AN)
23 By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after he was born,(AO) because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.(AP)

39 These were all commended(BU) for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised,(BV) 40 since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us(BW) would they be made perfect.(BX)
